The TropeCodifier of using platforms for gameplay, Mario's life started as a carpenter named Jumpman, who wanted to save his girlfriend Pauline from the ape known as Donkey Kong. Eventually, he and his brother Luigi would find themselves within the Mushroom Kingdom, now tasked to protect the land and Princess Peach from the tyrannical koopa king, Bowser. With his arrival to the land, the kingdom was able to rest at ease, as despite all the troubles the land may bring forth, Mario would be able to rise to the occasion to match and fight back against all these threats. As for his reputation in the real world, his debut into gaming has led to him saving the industry from MediaNotes/TheGreatVideoGameCrashOf1983, with Nintendo using VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1 as the app the Nintendo Entertainment System needed to sell gangbusters. For this great deed, he was elected to not only ascend into the Pantheon but be one of the founders of the House of Gaming.
** A long time ago in the early years of the Pantheon, the choice to ascend Mario came in the form of a challenge. He was sent a letter in the mail, saying that he was challenged to ascend a giant mountain, filled with many tricky and precarious jumps, enemies to use as platforms, eight red coins to collect, star medals for him to collect, and all other kinds of bonuses to get during this dangerous path to the top. While perplexed by this, he decided to head out and meet the challenge head-on, bringing Luigi along. Together (and after a lot of trial and error), the two of them were able to form a path for them to traverse to hop up to the top of the mountain, picking up every single collectible that was littered along the path. At the top, the two found to their surprise a welcoming party, there to welcome Mario to the Pantheon, explaining that it was a test to see if he was worthy. The gods up there waiting for Mario were surprised that Luigi also tagged along and made it, not even seeing them at first until Mario pointed him out to them. He was given the trope of StuckInTheirShadow to show the surprising capabilities he had alongside his brother. Mario wanted to try and find a new trope for his brother to have, but it took until an incident involving him getting kidnapped by King Boo yet again for him to convince the gods to promote Luigi [[Pantheon/{{Characterization}} (more on that in his profile)]].
* The first big project within the Pantheon was being tasked to help form the House of Gaming, with everyone seeing him as the savior of Gaming thanks to his efforts during the Great Video Game Crash. As such, he had to think about just who to bring in and just how to summon them. Eventually, with help from Luigi and the other Gods, the list was narrowed down to three other members aside from Mario himself to represent home consoles; Sonic the Hedgehog to represent the healthy competition in Gaming that was needed, Pac-Man to be a beacon for all the arcade games responsible for bringing up video games as a worthy mainstay, and finally, Mr Game & Watch to represent not only portable games, but also the start of Nintendo's shift over to dominating the Video Game market.
** Sonic's goal was to race up the same mountain Mario traversed, now barricaded with walls and hazards meant to stop someone from just racing up there. In Sonic's mind, it was just a quick jog that had a couple of jumps for him to do, showing off his attitude for the MascotWithAttitude trope. Pac-Man's task was to go into a maze and eat as many dots as possible while avoiding ghosts, with power pellets for him to fight back being provided at random, slowly growing intervals. By the time he made a mistake and got touched by a ghost, he had well surpassed the score requirement, netting him access to the pantheon. Mr Game & Watch's ordeal had Mario testing him on all the Game & Watch games and seeing how fast he could produce an item from said game. Thanks to his {{Hammerspace}} ability, he was able to beat the clock and go through the entire list, allowing him access to the realm of gods. Together, they became the founding fathers of the House Of Gaming. Anyone who wishes to join the house as a permanent member needs to be able to impress at least three of the four leaders of the household. Otherwise, if you just want to spend the day here and need an all-day access pass to ensure any [[TimedMission security measures based on timers]] don't spawn to chase you, you're more than welcome to just ask them.
* As Number 1 in Smash, he has just as much respect and reverence within Smash Bros as Master Hand. Master Hand may be the one calling the shots and bringing in new faces, but Mario is the first one to be let in on any details, bringing in supplies and setting up the introductory party to anyone lucky enough to enter the battlefield alongside gaming elites. From introducing Bowser to the rest of the fighters to being the one to bring in Sora as the final fighter, he's always there to welcome them with a bright smiling face. As such, if someone meets up with Mario for the first time within the Pantheon, you can bet it's because Mario ran into them [[LongRunner during the history of his appearance in over 200 games]]. [[ButtMonkey He also has gotten a history of being the one most newcomers beat up to show their skills, including almost getting killed by Sephiroth's sword, blown up by a creeper when Steve left him, and having his neck broken by Ridley.]] Some wonder if him bringing Sora into Smash was his way of finally getting someone who wouldn't just attack him after so long.
** On the topic of Sora, his reveal managed to get one question buzzing around the Pantheon after the reveal; is Mario capable of wielding the keyblade? He was able to call for it to summon Sora to Smash after all. [[ContinuityLockout However, the lore of Kingdom Hearts is already one that many are having headaches trying to keep up with even the characters within the series having trouble keeping up with.]] As such, most decided to just chalk this up to the keyblade at the very least trusting Mario enough to let him use it until it can get back to Sora. Still, some folks do keep seeing Mario wielding a giant sword-like object every now and then (even if he just claims it's his hammer when asked), so the rumors aren't going to be running out of steam anytime soon...
** Within the world of Smash, Mario has come across many different faces from various franchises, as one would expect, and being the AllLovingHero, Mario was able to get buddy-buddy with more than a couple of fighters. [[https://twitter.com/AerisGainsboro3/status/1748450654773764561 However, to the surprise of quite a few, Cloud declared that Mario was his best friend from the Smash world, while also claiming that DK was the most annoying.]] This odd friendship has been speculated on, with some thinking that Cloud saw some of Aerith's positivity and desire for a better world within Mario. Others just think that Cloud likes Mario's upbeat and friendly nature more than he is willing to admit, and may desire to be like him for the friends he cares for. A couple of others just think that the two bond of the fact they were both WebAnimation/DeathBattle contestants who lost before coming back for a rematch against their previous victor and proving to be triumphant over them, with Cloud besting Link and Mario beating out Sonic in their second bouts. Regardless, this does answer why Sephiroth targeted Mario when he came to Smash, a deed that Mario wouldn't forget. Aside from that, the two can get along surprisingly well, being seen just relaxing and talking on benches throughout the Pantheon and talking about their lives, or training with one another.
* Oh yeah, Mario's history with Sonic can't be overstated. Way back in the console wars of the 1990s, Nintendo was going against SEGA, and as such, Mario and Sonic were seen as opposites and rivals. It was a long fight, but eventually, thanks to the Dreamcast flopping, SEGA got knocked out, leaving Nintendo as the victor of the fight. Nowadays Playstation and Microsoft have proven to be bigger mainstays, but the war is more or less done as far as Mario is concerned. To date, Mario and Sonic see each other as a FriendlyRivalry at worst ever since they made peace during the Olympic Games. [[WebAnimation/DeathBattle That's not to say there haven't been]] [[WebAnimation/OneMinuteMelee rivalry fights between the two, especially in the field of combat.]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aq_dOLFmxA So far, Sonic snagged one win due to his]] SuperSpeed outpacing Mario's JackOfAllStats nature, [[https://youtu.be/nabMFIDhw6c?t=912 then after a while and gaining new abilities, Mario was able to come back and take the win right back from Sonic.]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1DnpzQh-Qk There was also an incident where Sonic was trying to institute the fact that he's the superior hero to Mario after Peach got kidnapped one too many times, only for Mario to catch Sonic off guard and claim victory within the minute.]] Regardless, the consensus many have nowadays is that Mario and Sonic are at the very least able to keep up with one another, with Mario's reaction speed being more than enough to match Sonic's speed, while Sonic's super forms are just as dangerous to the plumber. The war may be over, but the fights continue; just with a lot more playful and friendly strides.
* While Kirby is constantly praised as the strongest Nintendo fighter, [[MemeticBadass Mario and Luigi are constantly praised as the strongest Nintendo duo.]] These claims mainly started from [[VideoGame/MarioAndLuigi their duo adventures highlighting their feats]] from beating the Dark Star, the EldritchAbomination that got powered up on Bowser's strength and possessed Fawful, to Dreamy Bowser, a full-blown RealityWarper powered by the dreams of everyone, including his own to destroy the Mario Brothers; which they still won against. [[VideoGame/MarioPlusRabbidsSparksOfHope With Mario helping spearhead a ragtag team of heroes and rabbids against a cosmic horror possessing Rosalina]], many have commanded on Mario and Luigi at least being brave enough to stare down such a threat, let alone throw hands with it. There are also their feats of Mario beating Fury Bowser with the Giga Bell and the Shadow Queen with the crystal stars and Luigi taking on King Boo, someone capable of destroying the entire dimension and being a RealityWarper within his own. Add in the fact that the Mushroom Kingdom [[RealityIsOutToLunch has a restraining order against logic]] [[RuleOfFun and all the fun scenarios that resulted from that.]] Some circles even consider the two stronger than Kirby even when they are alone. Mario doesn't think about these talks that much. In his mind, if he needs to fight a god to try and preserve the peace, he's going to jump up to the challenge head-on. As for Kirby, Mario just sees him as another friendly face; more than happy to help him out whenever he needs it or to just relax and have fun with him. He does have to ensure he doesn't do anything that involves eating, however. Kirby tends to get carried away when eating, especially if someone says they'll pay the tab for him.
** One such example of such strength feats was from the previously mentioned Sephiroth. He wanted to try and bring Cloud despair and seeing Mario constantly helping him out, even offering 1-Up mushrooms for him to give to Aerith in case Sephiroth tries to stab her again was the last straw for him. Wanting to make good on his threat from Smash Bros where he almost killed Mario, [[MemeticMutation he spotted the Mario Bros together and challenged them to a fight.]] [[https://twitter.com/GirlSephiroth/status/1614683747429003269 Said fight has proven to be nothing short of humiliating for Sephiroth.]] Even when Mario was alone and Sephiroth wanted to try and kill him before he could get any help, Mario parrying Sephiroth's sword, the Masamune, so hard that it cracked and poured out an entire fire hydrant's worth of water onto Sephiroth's idea. Sephiroth still has his eyes on them, looking for a chance to strike and get revenge, but it's proven to be leagues more of a challenge than he originally anticipated.
* Mario and Peach are one of the most iconic pairings within the Pantheon, [[EveryoneCanSeeIt even if both of them do say they're not officially in a relationship yet.]] While they are close, Mario feels ashamed of himself for [[VideoGame/SuperMarioOdyssey blowing his chance to propose to Peach because he got scared Bowser would ruin it.]] On his end, Mario is currently talking with Eight, another loyal defender of his princess, not only since he made it into Smash, but also for advice on how to properly go about proposing to a princess like Eight did. Of course, this raised the question of just why Mario genuinely thought an enemy like Bowser could have a chance with Peach in the first place. [[https://youtu.be/RhZuvi4HWYk?t=25m16s Mario was able to clarify his stance by simply saying that he didn't see Bowser as an enemy, just a friend you may need to reign in a couple of times.]] This also explains just why he is so comfortable [[GoKartingWithBowser constantly inviting Bowser and his troops out to the racetrack and sporting events whenever the mood strikes.]] Bowser for his end just scoffs at these comments, saying [[ItsAllAboutMe "Of course Mario respects me! Everyone does! They just like to pretend they don't just so they can see my strength in action!"]] The truth of the matter is [[WorthyOpponent Bowser completely returns the respect, even if he won't stop gunning for Peach,]] [[TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou outright hating the idea of anyone beating him to the punch.]]
** The height of their FriendlyEnemy status can be seen whenever [[EnemyMine they have to team up to take down a greater threat.]] If anyone else besides Bowser or his allies tries to kidnap Peach, expect the both of them to be barreling down towards this threat as fast as possible. [[VideoGame/PrincessPeachShowtime After Peach's trip to the theatre ended with her beating Sour Grape who wanted to plunge the world into despair,]] Peach has been seen as a HopeBringer towards many residents in the Pantheon to look for inspiration...or as a light to be snuffed out. Enter resident HopeCrusher and proud HateSink owner, Junko Enoshima, who launched an attack on the Mushroom Kingdom with her Monokuma army, including having multiple Big Bang Monokumas to help destroy Peach. While she expected and planned for Mario to arrive to stop her plans, [[EvilCannotComprehendGood Bowser also arriving to willingly get forced into his giant form just to rip and tear the heads off of all the Big Bang Monokuma bots to keep Mario and Peach safe was something she didn't think would come to.]] Regardless, Junko managed to get more enemies and scared them with her lust for despair. [[TooKinkyToTorture She'll chalk that up as a win.]]
* Once upon a time, Mario was against the idea of using guns in his adventures, but however, after saving [[VideoGame/MarioPlusRabbidsKingdomBattle the Mushroom Kingdom with the Rabbids from the Megabug]], such a stance dropped, with him even talking with Master Chief at times to practice their shooting and jumping around while hitting targets. Surprisingly enough, Mario approached XCOM and offered to help them out if there was a mission they thought they needed extra help with. They can be seen talking about their unique guns, saying that he probably just needed to get a gun that looked kid-friendly enough to be open to them. Doesn't explain why he has a weapon called "Hell in a Shell". * Any mention of the '[[Film/SuperMarioBros1993 Super Mario Bros. Movie]]' ought to put the usually optimistic and fun-loving Mario in a sour mood. Once [[Pantheon/{{Categorism}} Eddie Valiant]] ascended, Mario has been polite but has demanded [[Creator/BobHoskins he]] never grows a mustache to avoid that thing being brought up again. [[https://www.cbr.com/super-mario-bros-1993-actually-good/ He is well aware of the fact that others out there do genuinely enjoy the film,]] be it for appreciating what it did at the time, or just in a SoBadItsGood way. He became faster and an even higher jumper than Mario, at the cost of being slippery to control, and his personality reflected that. He was a more eccentric figure than Mario, being more easily scared and startled, prone to more jokes, and just being {{Adorkable}} than his brother. These differences ended up stacking as he proved that he wasn't just a Mario clone, and was enough to stand out within the Pantheon.
* [[Pantheon/{{Gaming}} As Mario's profile alluded to,]] Luigi ascended with his brother after joining him in his platforming challenge to get up to the Pantheon, and was given the title of StuckInTheirShadow. While humiliated, Luigi took it while Mario wanted to try and find a new proper title for Luigi. It would take a good while for that chance to show. King Boo teamed up with Petey Piranha to bust free the captured ghosts that E. Gadd had in his temple. Due to any ghost hunters being out at the time, E Gadd was trapped within a painting as King Boo emptied the gallery clean. By the time one of the more docile ghosts E. Gadd got to help around the lab and managed to free him by using the dark light device, it was too late, and E. Gadd had to quickly sound the alarm to let the Pantheon know what was happening. Luigi was once more called to the fight alongside the likes of the Ghostbusters and Danny Fenton to lurk around the Pantheon to track each one back down. While obviously scared out of his mind with others taking note of his fright, he still stood his ground and went after King Boo with them, even saving Mario who got captured by King Boo yet again. After thanking Luigi and hearing the others tell Mario about how great Luigi is despite his scaredy-cat nature inspired Mario to help Luigi change his trope to DivergentCharacterEvolution to represent his unique personality. Now with his new title, Luigi feels more proud of his status as a god within the Pantheon, and made it his mission to help out others who feel [[StuckInTheirShadow trapped by other's feats to become their own unique beings.]]
* As previously stated, his main defining feature showing how different he is from Mario is his CowardlyLion nature. Even if he is scared out of his mind, he will still go out and give his all to help ensure the safety of those he loves. His compassion can even extend to ghosts if he feels like they are truly nice and decent folks, like the Polterpup. He even managed to find Morty, a ghost who wanted to just make movies instead of haunt or scare others, [[{{TheAtoner}} and to make up for capturing him the first time, after getting all the other ghosts back, he decided to ask the Court Of The Gods if he could get his own temple.]] Surprised by his care for a ghost, they decided to oblige his request. [[WhatTheHellHero Luigi got an earful from E. Gadd for that move because he let a potentially priceless ghost escape,]] but many others see this as doing the right thing. One such being was Courage The Cowardly Dog, who is impressed with how Luigi can still keep fighting for what's right even if he's haunted by powerful otherworldly threats. The two often join up with one another when they're scared and going through a haunted place and need someone to just be close to for comfort.
** During one of these expeditions, Luigi ended up meeting with two other scaredy-cats; Scooby-Doo and Shaggy Rogers. As it turns out, they both were there for the same reason; Dark Danny managed to escape and cause havoc within [[Pantheon/FictionalSettings The Monster Sanctuary]] [[VideoGame/NickelodeonAllStarBrawl while Danny was out stopping Vlad from mind-controlling the world]]. Dark Danny wanted to see if he could convert and create his own dark versions of the OlympusMons, [[Pantheon/ElementalPairings The Spectral Familiars]]. Thanks to their combined efforts and Dark Danny underestimating them, Shaggy and Scooby were able to distract him for long enough to be led into a trap with Courage using the Dark Matter Meteor to force Dark Danny to stay still as Luigi vacuumed him up with his Poltergust G-00, able to force him into a painting to keep him at bay for a while. After this feat, the group became fast friends, with Luigi being more than happy to go on ghost-busting trips with them should the need arise. [[VideoGame/{{Multiversus}} Also helps that Shaggy is practicing honing his powers after eating a magic rock crystal thinking it was rock candy,]] and Luigi will take all the help he can get to not be scared.

He's flattered and a bit bashful of all this praise, but he promised to take this new position in stride in his quest to help others stand out and be unique and proud.
** On his quest to help get a list of PaletteSwaps that can be their own character, he ended up coming across Ken Masters, another character who started his life as a clone before becoming a new character. Ken enjoyed the thought of what Luigi aspired by proving PaletteSwaps can be just as strong and unique as their original copies and invited him to spar with him against Sakura Kasugano, a {{Fangirl}} who wanted to copy and be like her idol Ryu, and Joe Higashi, an arrogant fighter who wants to stand out and be seen as more than a JokeFighter. While apprehensive about the fight, he still went along with it, and was able to show off his strength against them, and got to befriend them after the fight, liking Sakura's peppy and energetic desire to match Ryu's might, and managed to become a FriendlyRival to Joe. Ken appreciates and loves what Luigi represents for all PaletteSwaps, and the two of them can be seen sparring and working out together,

Despite some people finding it weird that the ghouls he faced before can still startle him, they are ''way'' more forgiving towards him when it comes to the more deadly ghosts the Pantheon has to offer. One such instance was when he was tasked with the unenviable task of going through the house of Pantheon/{{Ghosts}} to try and take down a threat to them that invaded their home in a moment of rage, that being none other than Alma Wade herself. Due to being attacked by her first and getting sent straight to her Almaverse, he ended up having to try and vacuum her up. He was almost burnt to a crisp for this, only saved thanks to a surprise intervention from one of Alma's more level-headed friends; Erma Williams. Thanks to her, Alma was able to give him her side of the story that she was assaulted by Kayako in a hit-and-run tactics-styled planned attack and came to get revenge. [[ThisIsGonnaSuck Luigi could only grimace at the fact that he was going to be facing off against Kayako now, lest face Alma's fury.]]
