* UsefulNotes/AdultsOnlyRatingESRB used to be "Adults Only Rating". It was being misused as a duplicate of ExplicitContent. It was eventually determined to be a {{Useful Note|s}} rather than a trope and renamed to reflect the real-life entity that uses the rating "Adults Only".

* UsefulNotes/TheBronzeAgeOfComicBooks used to be just "Bronze Age". It gave no indication that it had anything to do with comic books, and it also needed to match the new names for UsefulNotes/TheGoldenAgeOfComicBooks and UsefulNotes/TheDarkAgeOfComicBooks.

* UsefulNotes/TheDarkAgeOfComicBooks used to be just "Dark Age". It was renamed for not having any indication that it had to do with comic books, leading to it being mistaken for the trope TheDarkTimes.

* DoNotDoThisCoolThing used to be "Truffaut Was Right", after a quote from French director Creator/FrancoisTruffaut about anti-war movies. Unfortunately, not many tropers were familiar with Truffaut, and those who were associated him more with UsefulNotes/TheAuteurTheory, which he proposed. Before then, it used to be "Pink Lipstick Aesop", after a scene in an episode of ''WesternAnimation/{{Daria}}'', a reference that eluded everyone unfamiliar with it.

* AloofArcher used to be "Archer Archetye", and before that "The Archer", and before that "Straight Arrow", a term more often used metaphorically for someone who's very direct and follows all expectations. The name was originally changed to refer to weapon usage rather than character traits, then changed again to make it look less like a character-named trope, then changed again to further clarify the character traits involved.

* DoWrongRight used to be "This Is Not El Alamein", an oblique reference to the Battle of El Alamein which took place in Egypt during UsefulNotes/WorldWarII. Even if you were familiar with the battle, its association with the trope was a story in itself.

* AwfulWeddedLife used to be "No Exit", after [[Theatre/NoExit the play of that name]] by Creator/JeanPaulSartre. First, it was renamed to make room for the page on the play. Second, the play doesn't have anything to do with marriage ''specifically''; people who got the reference thought it had to do with a SelfInflictedHell. And third, as Music/{{Blondie}} fans might tell you, "No Exit" is also the title of at least one other work.

* DespairEventHorizon used to be "Morale Event Horizon". It was created JustForPun off of MoralEventHorizon, but this left it poorly defined. And people who saw it mistook it for a [[RougeAnglesOfSatin misspelled version]] of the original trope.

* CrutchCharacter used to be "Jeigan Character", after a character from ''Franchise/FireEmblem''. Even if you were familiar with the series ''and'' associated the trope to this aspect of his character, you ran into [[SpellMyNameWithAnS spelling issues]] -- the character's "official" English name is Jagen.

* DrivenByEnvy used to be "Saleiri Syndrome", after ''Theatre/{{Amadeus}}''. It was renamed for being opaque and failing to attract Administrivia/{{wick}}s.

* BestialityIsDepraved used to be "But You Screw One Goat". It was misleading because it was the punchline of a joke about NeverLiveItDown.

* EverythingExceptMostThings used to be "Overwhelming Exception". The former title ''is'' a pre-existing term for such a fallacy, but tropers misused it to mean a ''singular'' exception that is somehow "overwhelming" when it's actually about exceptions that ''outnumber'' straight cases.

* DramaticHighPerching used to be "I Have the High Ground", and was renamed because the fact that the original TropeNamer was actually an example of GeoEffects often led to this trope being confused with GeoEffects.

* CapeSnag used to be "No Capes", after a line from ''WesternAnimation/TheIncredibles''. It was renamed for clarity.

* DidntWantAnAdventure used to be "I Wanted to Go Bowling", a reference to ''WesternAnimation/TheIncredibles''. It was renamed as an opaque reference and StockPhrase.

* DramaticSlip used to be "I've Fallen and I Can't Get Up", after a BreakawayAdvertisement that went {{Memetic|Mutation}} because of thatline. It was misused as a StockPhrase and a reference to the meme, which led it to struggle.

* CloneAngst was previously "Cloning Blues". It was renamed because it was frequently misused to refer to the general concept of cloning, when it's specifically about clones feeling anst over the fact that they're not the originals.

* ExtravertedNerd used to be "The Urkel", after the character from ''Series/FamilyMatters''. As a character-named trope, not everyone got the reference or understood which trait of his character the trope was meant to describe.

* ActorAllusion used to be "The Alkazar", after a character from ''WesternAnimation/{{Futurama}}'' who was an {{expy}} of Al Bundy from ''Series/MarriedWithChildren'', where he played half the show's married sitcom couple alongside Creator/KateySagal (who plays Leela). The former name required you to know ''two'' shows to understand. And what's worse, it wasn't even spelled right; the character's name was Al'''c'''azar. On top of ''that'', Alcazar isn't even voiced by [[Creator/EdONeill Al Bundy's actor]], but series regular David Herman, meaning Alcazar isn't even an example himself -- the episode was an ActorAllusion for ''Leela''.

* ActorAllusion used to be "The Alkazar", after a character from ''WesternAnimation/{{Futurama}}'' whose voice actor played alongside Leela's actress in ''Series/MarriedWithChildren'', where they played the show's married sitcom couple. The former name required you to know ''two'' shows to understand. And what's worse, it wasn't even spelled right; the character's name was Al'''c'''azar.

* ExpositingTheMasquerade used to be "We Have Been Researching Phleotinum for Years". In addition to being unwieldy and a StockPhrase, it didn't necessarily have to do with AppliedPhlebotinum, leading to underuse.

* UsefulNotes/TheBechdelTest used to be "Bechdel's Rule". They're both named after the creator of the comic strip ''ComicStrip/DykesToWatchOutFor'' -- the original name came from the comic InUniverse, as a character refused to consume works that didn't pass the test, but people mistook it for a "rule" ''out'' of universe. This led to the trope being used as an endorsement of works that passed and an indictment of works that failed. The rename came as a way of enforcing that it's not about passing judgment on a work (and it was also moved to UsefulNotes).

* AccidentalNightmareFuel used to be just "Nightmare Fuel", and what we now call NightmareFuel was "High Octane Nightmare Fuel" (and even before that "Nightmare Fuel Unleaded"). The former trope is for things that are unintentionally scary, and the latter for things that are ''intentionally'' scary. But plain old "Nightmare Fuel", meant for the former, suffered TropeDecay and became used for the latter. Meanwhile, "High Octane Nightmare Fuel" basically became Administrivia/TheSameButMore.

* AlliterationAndAdventurers used to be "Magic Ampersand". It was renamed due to a combination of TropeDecay and the original name being unclear.

* CrazyIsCool used to be "Crazy Awesome". It was commonly misused as a Administrivia/PotholeMagnet and used to refer generally to anything people thought was awesome. CrazyAwesome is now a disambiguation page, and to give an idea of how disparately it was used, among the choices on that page are CrazyIsCool, RuleOfCool, SuccessThroughInsanity, and SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome.
