* JustFollowingOrders: After Maeve witnesses him lobotomising Clementine, Sylvester argues that refusal would only make his superiors suspicious, and someone else would do the job anyway.

Bernard has a dream about his last moments with Charlie, after which he interviews Hector due to his making a threat to a guest. Hector denies that the guest’s modern references made him question reality at all and repeats his nihilistic philosophy, and also says various pictures of the modern world don’t look like anything. A tech reports that there’s a request for Hector when he’s done, and Bernard asks after Elsie, but they’ve been told she’s gone on leave and don’t question her disappearance.

William plays poker with Lawrence, while Dolores still holds a grudge over his attempted betrayal. Lawrence is unapologetic, saying that with the state of the world he does whatever he needs to survive, and they were the ones who came to him in the first place. William blames Logan for that, to which Lawrence retorts William is the one here right now. Dolores sees dead bodies gruesomely displayed on spears outside, and Lawrnece lowers armor over the train windows and announces they’re entering Ghost Nation territory.

Bernard unsuccessfully tries to find Elsie with his tablet, and responds to a summons by Theresa. After he’s evasive about why he left so quickly last night, Theresa tells him about Hale’s arrival, and Bernard assures her his team won’t be impeding her work anymore.

Theresa goes to Hale’s guest room, where she shamelessly answers the door nude, having been in the middle of sex with Hector as the request mentioned earlier. She shuts Hector off and gets dressed, then chastises Theresa over the woodcutter incident and the problems Ford is causing. She reveals Delos is planning to remove Ford, but first they need to make sure he can’t erase the decades of information about the guests stored in the hosts’ code, which has been the real reason for the company’s interest in the park all along. She gives Theresa one last chance to get things under control, and says there should be a “blood sacrifice” from an unexpected direction.

Maeve starts her day as usual, but upon entering the Mariposa shuts off the player piano as a small rebellion against her programming. She and Clementine start their standard conversation which she quickly realizes she’s said many times before, and Clementine discusses her programmed backstory that includes planning to leave the job soon, raising Maeve’s sympathy knowing it will never actually happen. Suddenly she notices that all the hosts have frozen in place, and desperately pretends to also be switched off as staff members in hazmat suits come in. They discuss how they’ve been sent to retrieve a female host who’s done something serious and Maeve grabs a knife to fight them off, but they instead take Clementine, leaving her confused as the hosts come back on.

William asks Dolores what she’s hoping her journey leads to, and she admits she doesn’t know if it exists. She returns the question, and William says he feels like he’s in one of the stories he read as a child and just wants to know the true meaning of it. This leads to a romantic moment between them, but William stops them from kissing and explains about his fiancé Juliet. Dolores runs to another car and William follows, continuing that for the first time he feels like he doesn’t have to put on an act about who he is, and they have sex.

Hale and Theresa call Ford and Bernard to where they’re holding Clementine, and say they found something while setting her back to her previous program after the last update was cancelled. They turn her on and a man enters the room, and violently attacks Clementine, to which Theresa can barely watch while Hale just coldly stares. The program is stopped and they both freeze, revealing the man is also a host, though Clementine has been programmed to see him as human. Her memory is wiped and the scene started again, but this time Clementine is the one who goes on the attack, even more violently until the man is killed. She then ignores Stubbs’ command to shut down, until he has to shoot her. Theresa puts the blame on the reveries allowing hosts to keep some memories that cause them to want revenge, and Hale puts the blame on Bernard, thinking he’ll point the finger at Ford as the person truly behind it. Bernard doesn’t take the bait, but is then shocked when Ford also doesn’t speak up, even when Hale fires him, and just keeps staring at them with a very knowing look.

William tells Dolores he now understands how the park reveals people’s deepest selves, to which she retorts she’s not just a prop in his story. She also reveals she’s been driven to paint a new canyon landscape she imagined rather than just reality, but just then the train abruptly stops due to boulders on the track. The surviving Confederados set the trap and start attacking, but soon a man rides toward them with a white flag. When he gets close they discover it’s actually Slim’s body, which Lawrence shoots with a shotgun, detonating the nitroglycerin inside. William, Dolores, and Lawrence escape on horseback in the confusion, and William and Dolores both land fatal shots on their pursuers without a second thought before the Ghost Nation arrives and starts taking care of the Confederados. Upon escaping again, Dolores is stunned to see they’ve arrived at the very landscape she’d just painted, apparently hidden somewhere in her prior memories. Lawrence offers to let them comeback with him as William has “a knack for killing,” but they decide to keep going through what Lawrence warns is uncharted territory, the most dangerous section of the park near the edge.

Maeve has gotten herself killed again to get back to Felix, and he finds that Clementine is on an upper level with the company’s top brass. Maeve insists they go there, posing as a mindless host. They find Sylvester about to operate on Clementine, and he sees them but still has to go ahead due to Theresa being in the room. He drills into Clementine’s nose, destroying her personality core as Maeve helplessly watches. Bernard comes in and asks to talk to Theresa.

Bernard confronts Theresa about how Clementine was obviously programmed to act as she did, which Ford surely figured out if Bernard did, and about the woodcutter. However, he says he doesn’t care as he’s begun to suspect Ford himself, and that the hosts may be remembering a dangerous amount for everyone.

Sylvester stammers to Maeve that he had to “retire” Clementine to avoid suspicion, but Maeve sidesteps the issue as she sternly tells him and Felix she’s now after getting out of the park entirely. Sylvester objects that Delos will stop at nothing to control her, but she threatens to kill him if he doesn’t help, as he has far more reason to fear death than her.

On the way to the cabin with Ford’s family, Theresa explains to Bernard about Delos making their own backups of all the hosts’ information in case Ford tried to destroy it on his way out. Bernard bitterly replies that he’s starting to understand the hosts more than humans. At the cabin, Bernard reveals that the hosts are programmed to not see any of it, even looking right at it. The hosts are gone, but Theresa finds a door that Bernard follows her through, though not before saying “What door?” They find an old host-making lab under the cabin, and Theresa looks through blueprints when her face suddenly turns to pure shock. She shows Bernard a design for what seems to be Bernard himself, and he gives the typical host response “It doesn’t look like anything to me.” Ford appears from the shadows and confirms that Bernard is a host, and Theresa calls him a monster. Ford retorts that she’s the one trying to destroy all the hosts, including Bernard, while Bernard himself insists he can’t be a host when he remembers his son’s death so well. Ford blithely turns him off, and expounds on his philosophy that all of human intellect is designed around the base mating instinct, and the hosts are better off than humans with their lack of any such pretentions. Then he plays his trump card: this whole time, Bernard has been acting under Ford’s programming to get Theresa here alone. She’s only the latest of Delos’ attempts to get rid of him, and he says that now the situation demands a “blood sacrifice,” revealing he was watching her conversation with Hale and likely a lot more. Theresa accuses him of also using Bernard to kill Arnold, to which he simply says Bernard wasn’t built yet. She finds her phone isn’t working, also as Ford planned. Finally, he orders Bernard to finish the job, and turns his back as Bernard smashes her head into the wall. They both calmly leave Theresa’s dead body behind, getting back to work on the new story.

It is revealed that Theresa and Hale are both secretly stealing Ford's research for the board so that they can oust him from the park without fear of him destroying his work in retribution. They engineer an event to demonstrate that Ford's updates make the hosts violent and uncontrollable in their narratives. Bernard is blamed for the update of untested faulty code and fired as a result. William and Dolores develop romance. The train is then attacked by the Confederados, forcing William, Dolores, and Lawrence to flee. They are saved when the Confederados are ambushed by an Indian tribe called the Ghost Nation. Dolores and William part ways with Lawrence. Meanwhile, Maeve finds her friend Clementine retired by the staff. The former decides to use Felix and Sylvester to escape the park. Bernard takes Theresa to Sector 17; inside a hidden lab she finds design plans that reveal he is a host. Ford appears, reiterates to her that he has complete control over the park, regardless of what the board thinks, and has Bernard kill her.

* KilledOffForReal: Clementine gets permanently decommissioned after her malfunctions are presented to the board. Theresa is murdered by one of Ford's robots.

* CallBack: The same CrashIntoHello gunfight as in "The Adversary" occurs as Maeve walks down the street. This time a guest who's slow on the draw is involved, but his opponent doesn't fire and so is killed. This reminds the audience that the hosts are ThreeLawsCompliant, setting us up for TheReveal that they are anything but. Maeve also reacts to the gunshot this time, showing she's become more self-conscious of the world around her.

Later Bernard can't see the door to Ford's secret lab, because he's been programmed to see it as a wall. This is actually foreshadowed in the previous episode when Ford [[BehindTheBlack suddenly appears next to that wall]] the last time Bernard visited the cottage. While at the time it seemed he was standing in the corner, [[RewatchBonus it's now apparent]] he just walked through the door that Bernard couldn't see.
