Maeve goes through her usual morning in a parallel to Dolores’, walking past all the usual violence to work. One of the guests at the Mariposa looks particularly rough, and Maeve waves off Clementine and says she’ll handle him herself. Once upstairs she viciously insults his masculinity and encourages him to get rougher until he chokes her to death, resulting in her going back to Maintenance where she continues her talk with Felix.
Bernard explains to Elsie that the woodcutter is an old enough host that even with the destruction of his head, all the information about his movements were sent to an old system that their current computers can’t read. He goes to a lower level that clearly hasn’t seen any visitors in quite a while, and finds the place the host went off script. As he’s about to leave, the old computer also reports five hosts that were never registered with the new system, much to his surprise.
In Lawrence’s village, all the hosts suddenly stop in their tracks as Ford arrives with a survey team, who tell him the entire town will have to be destroyed to create a canyon as large as he wants for his new story. Ford decides against it and orders the canyon ended at the edge of town. He starts the hosts up again and takes a walk around, discovering The Maze carved into a table.
In his office, Ford lays out a diorama that includes the church from Dolores’ visions. He flips through a notebook belonging to Arnold filled with designs for hosts and locations, and discovers The Maze drawn there too.
Teddy spots Kissy’s scalp with its Maze pattern on the Man in Black’s saddle, and tells the Native legend about it: a man was killed again and again and kept struggling back to life, until he finally destroyed all his enemies and built a house with a maze around it so complicated he could never be disturbed again. Upon getting close to Pariah they’re told the border is closed due to trouble in the town, which the Man in Black figures is why Teddy had to be his partner.
Felix tells Maeve about her true nature as a robot, including that beyond some minor improvisations, her entire personality was manufactured and is beyond her control. Maeve at first refuses to believe it, so Felix links her program to a tablet and shows how every single word she says is drawn from her program at the moment she says it. The startled Maeve struggles to say something outside the program, but can’t form any of the words and soon crashes completely.
Theresa informs Bernard that Ford knows about their relationship, and it has to stop before the Delos board starts questioning her impartiality. She also says Ford’s updates have become such a problem that the board is preparing to get rid of him completely, and refuses to listen to Bernard’s protests.
After apparently hours of effort, Felix is finally able to wake Maeve up again. She immediately asks to see the “upstairs” he’d briefly mentioned, and while he initially protests, she gets him to agree simply by holding his hand, making a connection purely on how she’s practically just as human as him. And so she’s taken on a tour of the entire facility, seeing hosts being designed, built, and programmed, as well as the careless way damaged ones are treated. Finally, she sees a promotional video that includes the exact scenes from her visions. Felix explains about how the hosts are moved between roles, but they’re interrupted by Sylvester, who threatens to report the whole thing. Maeve threatens him with a scalpel, revealing that she can use it thanks to Felix’s reprogramming, and threatens to kill him if he doesn’t keep quiet.
Theresa finishes a call with a board member in China, who gives her strict orders that she promises to get done. She finds Sizemore at a rooftop pool over the control room, and tells him he needs to get to work fixing the holes created by all the hosts that have been reserved for Ford’s new story. Sizemore complains about all his work that was destroyed, but Theresa just says she knows he’ll follow orders in the end.
Teddy shows the Man in Black a route to Wyatt defended by Union soldiers, who are less of an obstacle than the people at Pariah but still too much to ensure Teddy will survive. Instead of shooting their way through, they ambush a group of soldiers about to arrive and take their uniforms. Several of the men are missing body parts, which Teddy recognizes as Wyatt’s handiwork. A soldier recognizes him, and accuses him of helping Wyatt at the Escalante massacre. The Man in Black tries to calm things down, but then Teddy starts shooting the soldiers.
Sizemore spots an attractive woman entering the pool area, and introduces himself. He quickly starts complaining again about how he can’t do his work properly with everyone above him interfering. He’s embarrassed further when the bartender gives a message from Theresa to get back to work, and when the woman walks away he grabs a tequila bottle and leaves.
Elsie tells Bernard she’s getting closer to finding who reprogrammed the woodcutter, as there’s a time stamp she can cross-reference with everyone’s schedule. She looks forward to Theresa being fired over it, to which Bernard defends her despite their breakup.
Bernard learns that the area with the unregistered hosts has been reserved for future narratives, with no one having been recorded there. He goes to the spot himself and finds a small house with a family of hosts, including the boy who met Ford. The father quickly turns violent and starts to push Bernard out, not responding to his commands to stop, but suddenly Ford seems to appear out of nowhere and gives an order that’s obeyed. He explains that they’re replicas of his own family built by Arnold as a gift, including his greyhound, with the boy being Ford himself. He’s maintained them himself since Arnold’s death, as well as making them more like the real people. Bernard is convinced to leave it alone thanks to Ford bringing up the memory of his own son.
Sizemore drunkenly urinates on the control room map, viciously insulting everyone at Delos. Theresa arrives and introduces the woman he met as Charlotte Hale, the company’s executive director. Sizemore is suddenly embarrassed and at a loss for what to do besides zip up.
Bernard asks the computer system about all the first generation hosts left in the park, and looks through a list of them all.
A soldier prepares to torture Teddy with a brand shaped like The Maze, triggering a memory that he did indeed help Wyatt with the massacre. With this memory restored, he’s able to fight back and even mow down all the soldiers with a gattling gun, a level of violence even the Man in Black is shocked by. He then coldly says they should just keep moving.
Elsie reports to Bernard that the satellite the woodcutter was sending his data to was one of Delos’ own, and the instructions came from one of the old transmitters from Arnold’s attempt to give the hosts consciousness. She says she’s going out to investigate the site, against Bernard’s warning.
Ford meets again with the host of his younger self, asking to play catch with the greyhound. The host shows him the dog, who’s been shot in the head.
Elsie enters the transmitter station, which resembles an old abandoned theater with numerous props strewn around and no light on. She finds the terminal and looks up who’s been using it.
Bernard knocks on Theresa’s door, and ignores a call from Elsie as he starts to tell her about Ford’s host family as they convinced him she has reason to be worried about Ford. Elsie calls again, and tells him Theresa was the one who reprogrammed the woodcutter. She starts to say there’s something bigger going on, but Bernard gives a hard look at Theresa and says she’ll need to call back later.
Felix and Sylvester show Maeve her own program, including that her intelligence is at the cap of how high any hosts are allowed to go. She asks them to change it, and Sylvester says they can’t as the system would catch it. Maeve reveals Felix told her Sylvester has a way around it, which she figured out is so he can loan out hosts to the other staff members. He promptly gets to work under the blackmail.
Bernard takes another call from Elsie once he’s alone, and she reports that someone besides Theresa has been sending out their own reprogramming for weeks, allowing the hosts to break out of their storylines even to the point of being able to hurt people. She says she’ll meet him later with the full details.
The boy host claims he doesn’t know what happened to the dog, but Ford puts him in analysis mode where he admits that was a lie. He heard Arnold’s voice telling him to kill the dog after it killed a rabbit, saying it was the kindest thing to do. Ford appears very unnerved about this.
Elsie is especially shocked by a new discovery on the terminal, but is quickly pulled away by an unseen assailant.
Felix and Sylvester find that someone with top level access has already been altering Maeve’s code, and Sylvester wants to stop. Maeve again appeals to his greed in keeping his side business going, and he’s quickly back in line as Felix lowers her loyalty and pain reception, and also boosts her intelligence to the maximum level. She gives a brief laugh and smiles as the new program takes over, and says “We’re going to have some fun, aren’t we?”
