Furthermore, Avon and Stringer's argument about the Brother Mouzone situation and working with Proposition Joe hints the growing tensions between the two in the next season, as Stringer's idea of business versus Avon's idea of tradition begin to clash.

Overlong plot summary replaced with concise version, as per mod decision.

At the port, Ott arrives and greets some of his co-workers, including Horseface, Johnny Fifty, La La and Maui. They go by the fence when they see a police boat trying to pull in what looks like a body, though no one can make out who.

Nick drives to the bridge [[Recap/TheWireS02E11BadDreams where Frank and the Greek were supposed to meet]]. He sees Frank's car is still parked there, but no one else is around.

The police boat gets to the pier, and more stevedores gather at the fence.

Nick gets to the port. He goes into the trailer with Frank's office, but no one is there, and then he rushes out to the pier, where all the others are gathered. The other stevedores see the body, and sure enough, it's Frank. Ott and the others all hang their heads in sadness, while Diggins, who was on the boat, radios in that they found a floater.

In the detail office, Kima, Lester and [=McNulty=] are briefing Daniels on Spiros; he hasn't gone home or used his car or phone. Fitz adds they're running a check on [[Recap/TheWireS02E11BadDreams Rados]], but they haven't come up with anything yet. Beadie interrupts by telling Lester he has a call from Homicide. Lester goes into another room to take it; it's Jay, who tells him he has [[Recap/TheWireS02E09StrayRounds thirteen reports that Lester requested of dead bodies without hands, faces and/or heads]], and there would be over four dozen more if he expanded the search nationwide ("[[DeadpanSnarker What can I tell you, kiddo? We're policing a culture in moral decline]]"). Lester tells him to send the reports with a patrolman to the southeast district, and hangs up.

Stringer visits Brother Mouzone at the hospital. Brother Mouzone says he's doing well under the circumstances, and when Stringer says the Barksdales have his back and are willing to find "whoever did this", Brother Mouzone says he's not interested; furthermore, he's releasing Avon from their contract. Stringer starts to repeat the offer, but Brother Mouzone curtly tells him he will take care of "them" himself. Stringer asks, "Them? Who came at you?", [[INeverSaidItWasPoison at which point Brother Mouzone finally looks up, stares at Stringer for several seconds, and dismisses him]]. Stringer leaves.

Horseface, La La and Nat are in Frank's office, along with Nick, and they're desperately trying to hold Nick down as he talks about wanting to go kill "those Greek bastards." Nick accuses the others of abandoning Frank, but Horseface asks Nick if he wants to end up like [[Recap/TheWireS02E10StormWarnings Ziggy]], and Nick has no answer to that; he starts to cry again. Just then, Louis shows up, and when Nick looks up and sees him, Louis indicates, "Let's go." Nick gets up and follows him out of the office.

At the Terrace, Bubbles and Johnny see some paramedics working on a woman who [=OD'd=]. They see the ambulance, but don't see Santangelo, who's directing traffic, so when Bubbles tells Johnny to keep a lookout while he robs the ambulance, he's surprised by Santangelo when he comes out, and Johnny's already been handcuffed.

At the port, Beadie, Bunk and Daniels have arrived, and go to Jay, who admits he [[Recap/TheWireS02E11BadDreams remembered to call this time]]. Holley, the primary, tells Daniels Frank was stabbed several times in the torso and abdomen, plus they cut his throat for good measure. Jay also adds that his body was weighted down, but the weight slipped off in the water. Beadie walks over to Frank's body and starts sobbing as the paramedics take it away.

Carver and Herc are still staking out Nick's place, and Herc bitches about how little respect they've been getting, saying they should go somewhere else. Carver tries to say Daniels has been good to them, but doesn't look too convinced.

Daniels is at Valchek's office, telling him what happened (including the fact [[Recap/TheWireS02E11BadDreams Frank was supposed to come in as a cooperator]]), and Valchek allows he almost feels sorry for Frank, but says, "The guy laid down with gangsters, gets up with his throat cut". Daniels looks askance at that, but compliments Valchek by telling him he was right about Frank, and that Burrell, as a result, is honoring [[Recap/TheWireS02E04HardCases the deal they made to turn the detail into a Major Crimes unit]]. Daniels then brings up [[Recap/TheWireS02E10StormWarnings Prez]], and Valchek says he's going to charge him. Daniels points out everyone in the room wrote up a report on what happened, including Valchek calling Prez a "shitbird" and pushing him, and while he'd be able to get those on the detail to spin it Valchek's way, the FBI agents who were there are another story. Valchek paces around the room, and sets his conditions; Prez has to ride a desk in the southeastern district for two months on the midnight shift, personally apologize to Valchek, and write a letter of apology to everyone in the room, after which he doesn't care what Prez does. Daniels nods, and Valchek dismisses him.

At the front desk of the police station, the desk officer is arguing with someone on the phone when Louis enters with Nick. Lester also comes by, asking for the reports he asked Jay for; the desk officer hands it to him before getting back on the phone. Finally, Louis gets the officer's attention, and identifies himself and Nick. Lester, who's looking at the photos in the envelope, looks up when he hears this.

Bubbles and Johnny are handcuffed to a table in an interrogation room when Kima and [=McNulty=] walk in, and Kima chides him for trying to steal morphine from an ambulance.

Spiros goes to a hotel room, where the Greek is. He tells the Greek the bad news about Frank's body coming up, as well as the fact that Nick knows. They both agree there's nothing more that can be done at this point, and the Greek says they should cut their losses and leave town, especially since they have many identities for this occasion. The Greek does remember one last piece of business; there's a shipment of $15 million worth of drugs sitting on the pier. Spiros doesn't like having to leave it behind, but the Greek points out no one can pick it up without attracting attention, and that what's done is done. Spiros, sighing, gets on the phone. Two of Spiros' men are in a car outside of Nick's house, and when they get the call from Spiros, they drive off, right past Carver and Herc, who are sleeping.

Daniels, Fitz, Rawls, Reese, and Rhonda are in Burrell's office, updating him on the case. Burrell asks what's left of the case; Rhonda says they've arrested everyone on the wiretap except for Spiros (as they were hoping he could lead them to the main boss), but he's in the wind, Reese adds the FBI is mostly interested in the union and, with Frank dead, they can't lay many charges there, and Rawls still wants to know who was responsible for the murdered prostitutes (though he's interested mostly for his clearance rate). Just then, Daniels gets a phone call from Lester, who tells him about Nick.

Back in the interrogation room, Kima tells Bubbles he hasn't given them anything to make his charges go away. [=McNulty=] asks if there's been any murders, and Bubbles says there hasn't been, but he [[Recap/TheWireS02E10StormWarnings does bring up Brother Mouzone shooting Cheese]], and [=McNulty=] is surprised and excited to learn about Avon's crew working together with Proposition Joe.

Bunk, Daniels, Lester and Rhonda are at the detail office with Nick and his lawyer. Nick marvels at how much they know, and when Rhonda starts to ask if there's anything about the deal he doesn't understand, Nick cuts in with, "[[ItsPersonal They killed my uncle.]]" Bunk asks how he knows Spiros and the others were behind it, and Nick tells him about [[Recap/TheWireS02E11BadDreams his meeting with Spiros, as well as Frank agreeing to meet with Spiros under the bridge]]. As Bunk goes out of the room momentarily, Nick tells them he knew what happened when he saw Frank's car under the bridge. He also realizes he could have been killed as well if Frank hadn't ordered him not to show up. Like Frank, Nick says they had no idea there were dead women in the container, and assumed it was drugs or some other contraband. Lester brings up [[Recap/TheWireS02E07Backwash the drugs Nick himself was dealing]], and Nick looks ashamed. Bunk returns with Ziggy's confession, and he and Lester say no matter what Spiros promised, he wouldn't have been able to spring Ziggy. Daniels adds Frank was coming in to try and get Nick and Ziggy a better deal, and Rhonda says they're willing to offer the same deal to Nick. Nick nods. He identifies Eton, Spiros and White Mike (though he doesn't know who Ilona is), and like Frank, says he won't testify against Horseface. Nick gets to Sergei, and says while Sergei was the driver, he also had the feeling Sergei was muscle as well, and says he heard whoever was responsible for the dead women had been taken care of [[Recap/TheWireS02E02CollateralDamage in Philadelphia]], but he doesn't know the particulars. Lester shows him [[Recap/TheWireS02E11BadDreams the photograph of Spiros and Rados]], and Nick doesn't know who Rados is, but after a few seconds of looking, he picks out the Greek (who's lighting his cigarette) and identifies him. The others can't believe they missed him.

Outside the interrogation room, Kima tells [=McNulty=] what they know about Cheese. Santangelo comes by, and [=McNulty=] confirms they have to let Bubbles and Johnny go, which doesn't make Santangelo happy. When Bubbles and Johnny are released, and Bubbles asks to use the bathroom, Santangelo curtly tells him to use an alleyway. Kima asks about product in the towers, and Bubbles says while it used to be shit, it's good now.

Lester is alone at the detail office with Nick when Fitz comes in; he's checked out Rados, who's nothing but a K-street lawyer. He also has news of another shipment coming into the docks, which Lester compliments him on finding out. Fitz notices Nick, who's resting his head on the desk, and Lester says Fitz needs to call the U.S. attorney to set up witness protection for Nick. He also adds that they need to keep it quiet, since they already lost one cooperator. Fitz looks troubled by that. Lester calls Daniels at home to update him on the situation, and we see Marla and Daniels are sleeping in separate bedrooms. Fitz starts to send a fax, but changes his mind and calls Koutris instead. The receptionist tells him Koutris is no longer in San Diego, but Fitz could try the counter-terrorism office in D.C., since he's been there a year. [[OhCrap Fitz looks horrified.]]

Carver and Herc have had enough, and bang on the door of Nick's house. Louis answers, and Carver says if Nick doesn't turn himself in, a squad car will bang on their house every day. Louis says Nick's already turned himself in, and gives Carver Lester's card. Carver, even angrier, takes the card and takes off.

Two agents escort Aimee, Ashley and Nick into a motel room. They warn Nick not to use the phone, and if they need anything to let the agent outside now. Once the door closes, Aimee complains about the place, and Nick, trying to lighten things up a little, reminds her [[Recap/TheWireS02E03HotShots she wanted her own place]].

Back at the detail office, Lester shows Beadie, Bunk and Daniels the photos he got. He asks Bunk if there were any photos from the ship, and Bunk says there might be. Everyone but Daniels takes off, and as Beadie and Bunk head to their car, they come across Carver and Herc, who are still angry.

Omar is with Butchie, who confirms Brother Mouzone was most likely telling the truth. He also says Brother Mouzone operates mostly out of New York and Philadelphia, and if Avon had contacted him, then Omar would most likely be dead by now. Omar considers this, and Butchie blames himself for allowing the meeting to take place. Omar says he'll be going after Stringer even harder now, and Butchie asks how he's going to do that. Omar doesn't know, but says he'll think on it.

Back at the detail office, Daniels tries to apologize to Carver and Herc, but they're not having it; Herc points out how low they are on the totem pole in general, and Carver agrees. Daniels points out the job they do is more than "rip-and-run", but that doesn't mollify them either. Carver says [[Recap/TheWireS02E09StrayRounds Colvin]] has an opening in the Western for a sergeant in a flex squad, and since he has stripes, he's going for it. He stomps off.

Kima and [=McNulty=] are staking out the Terrace, observing Avon and Proposition Joe's crews working together. Kima's pager goes off.

Beadie and Bunk are at the Philadelphia shipyard, and a guard says he doesn't remember anything out of the ordinary that happened at the port, and the guy who was on guard duty the night the "Atlantic Light" was there can't see, but they have videotapes of that night.

Kima joins Cheryl at a baby store, and Cheryl is far more excited about it than Kima is, which tempers Cheryl's mood once she realizes this. She points out to Kima the baby's coming soon, and will need both of them. Kima looks somewhat chastened, but not any more enthusiastic.

Aimee comes out of the motel bathroom, having just showered, and sees Nick watching TV with Ashley. She asks him what's next, but he doesn't know.

At the port, Johnny Fifty tells Horseface about a hot container. Once Horseface realizes it's from the Greeks, he angrily tells Johnny Fifty to dump it, and stalks off.

Fitz and Lester are on a computer in the detail office when Kima and [=McNulty=] join them. Kima asks Lester about the calls Proposition Joe's people were making for re-ups, and Lester says for the short length of time they were on the phones, it was pretty brisk business. Kima and [=McNulty=] look at each other and take off. When Fitz and Lester see there's a hot container at the port but it's not going anywhere, they take off as well.

Proposition Joe meets with Spiros at a park bench, and Proposition Joe commiserates with Spiros about the people he lost. Spiros says he'll be leaving town, but more of his people will be coming in a week, and will find Proposition Joe, who shouldn't have to wait longer than that for good drugs (though the most recent shipment is out). Proposition Joe is fine with that, and wishes Spiros a safe trip.

Daniels, Fitz and Lester are at the hot container, which is now open, and, as confirmed, full of drugs. The port cop asks if they want the drugs brought to Customs, and Lester tells them to re-seal the container and sit on it in case someone comes for it. Daniels said that they could have had a hell of a case if they had gotten on this earlier.

Stringer visits Avon in prison. Avon is upset that Brother Mouzone got ambushed before getting the job done, and he's also upset at Stringer for asking Brother Mouzone who shot him. Stringer acknowledges that. Avon, in turn, finally agrees Stringer should make a deal with Proposition Joe of product for territory, and he's willing to let it be until he gets out of prison. Stringer puts his fist against the glass and says, "Us, man," and Avon returns the gesture, but not as enthusiastically as in earlier times.

At the detail office, Bunk is showing Daniels, Fitz and Lester the tape they took from the Philadelphia docks, and though it's of bad quality (the tech explains they combine footage from several different cameras onto one tape, which affects the quality), they make out the missing crewman running from the ship, as well as Sergei catching up to him.

At an alley, Stringer visits Proposition Joe, who's sitting in the back of an SUV. Proposition Joe informs him the shipment will be a week later, and as Stringer accepts the news (and tells him Avon approved their deal), Kima and [=McNulty=] snap pictures of them.

Nat enters the union hall, and asks what's going on. Johnny Fifty lets him know about the dirty container, but Nat wants to know what's going on with Frank. Just then, Agent Reese comes in with other agents, and after chiding Horseface for being there given his pending indictment, lays down her ultimatum; if they don't elect new officers and clean up the union, it'll get de-certified, the feds will make the union's decisions, and the hall will be padlocked. As the agents walk off, Ott storms over to the bulletin board, takes his campaign flier down so that only Frank's is visible, tells the others, "One man, one vote," and storms off.

Sergei is in an interrogation room, and Lester plays [[Recap/TheWireS02E09StrayRounds the recording they have of him saying, "Did he have hands? Did he have a face?"]]. Sergei denies having anything to do with it, but Lester shows the pictures of the man who fled the ship, both when he was alive and after he was mutilated, and Bunk shows the footage they got from the Philadelphia dock. Lester says it adds up to aggravated murder and kidnapping, which makes it a death penalty case. This finally breaks Sergei's resolve, and he says he didn't kill the man. He admits torturing him, but says Spiros killed him. Sergei then explains [[Recap/TheWireS02E02CollateralDamage what they learned when they interrogated the crew member]]. Bunk offers Sergei something to drink; after asking for vodka, he accepts coffee. Outside the interrogation room, Bunk tells Beadie and Daniels all the murders are down, including the floater [=McNulty=] picked up, and everyone is happy, though Daniels thinks they should wait to tell Rawls. Daniels thinks there's one more thing they should do. He goes into the interrogation room and shows Sergei the photo of the Greek. Sergei recognizes him, but doesn't know his name. However, he does know which hotel they were staying at...

...[[DescriptionCut and Bunk and Daniels, along with a bunch of cops, go into that hotel room]], but everyone has long gone...

...while at the airport, the Greek gets his plane ticket from the reservation desk. He and Spiros head down the escalator, and the Greek starts patting his pockets. When Spiros asks if he forgot anything, the Greek answers, "Nothing important"...

...[[DescriptionCut and back at the hotel room]], Daniels finds some worry beads.

Beadie, Bunk, Daniels, Fitz, Lester and Rhonda are all at the bar (Carver and Herc are as well, though sitting separately from them), all looking upset, when Kima and [=McNulty=] enter. Bunk sums up the case for them, but adds that the Greek and Spiros have skipped town with new identities, and they have no way of tracking them down. However, Kima and [=McNulty=] have news of their own, and tell Daniels about Proposition Joe and Stringer working together, which [=McNulty=] thinks a major case squad should investigate instead of Narcotics. Daniels smirks at that. As [=McNulty=] goes to talk to Beadie, Fitz approaches Daniels, and after telling Daniels "you never heard this from me," confesses he inadvertently tipped the Greeks off thanks to Koutris, who apparently used the Greek as an asset after 9/11. Fitz apologizes, and Daniels looks upset. Back at the bar, Beadie says, "[[ArcWords World just keeps turning, right? You guys move on to something new. No one looks back.]]" Lester offers to buy everyone another round, but only Beadie takes him up on it.

At the motel, Nick is getting dressed. Aimee wants to know where he's going, and Nick says, "Work."

In his office, Valchek sees [[Recap/TheWireS02E02CollateralDamage the stolen surveillance van]] is now in Australia, and shakes his head.

Nick is being driven by an agent, and Nick gets out of the car when he gets near the docks, assuring him, "No one fucks with us on our turf." Inside the union hall, only La La is there, and he confirms to Nick there's nothing going on that hasn't been claimed by those who have seniority. Nick heads back outside. As the agent watches in his car, Nick goes to the fence, looks out, and as we MontageOut (to the tune of Music/SteveEarle's "I Feel Alright"), we see (a) the union hall being padlocked, (b) Johnny Fifty peeing on the container, (c) Rhonda presenting her case against, among others, Eton and Horseface, (d) a secretary changing the names of the Jane Does from red to black as Jay and Rawls look on happily, (e) Ziggy being led down the prison hall, (f) [[Recap/TheWireS02E02CollateralDamage Andy Krawczyk]] leading the groundbreaking ceremony for the condo being built on the grain pier, accompanied by, among others, Clay Davis, (g) Beadie, who's a port officer again, driving past Frank's old office, and looking at it sadly, (h) Lester boxing up the case in the detail office, (i) the drug trade continuing to flourish, (j) the stevedores, including Johnny Fifty and Nat, drinking out of bottles in paper bags on a street corner, (k) Proposition Joe picking up the product from the new guys Spiros sent, (l) a new set of prostitutes being chauffeured around in a truck, (m) and finally, a bunch of shots of the abandoned pier before going back to Nick, who takes one last look before walking away.

Carver and Herc are still staking out Nick's place, and Herc bitches about how little respect they've been getting, saying they should go somewhere else. Carver
tries to say Daniels has been good to them, but doesn't look too convinced.

Daniels is at Valchek's office, telling him what happened (including the fact [[Recap/TheWireS02E11BadDreams Frank was supposed to come in as a cooperator]]), and
talk Valchek allows he almost feels sorry out of charging Prez for Frank, but says, "The guy laid down with gangsters, gets up with his throat cut". Daniels looks askance at that, but compliments Valchek by telling him he was right about Frank, and that Burrell, as a result, is honoring [[Recap/TheWireS02E04HardCases the deal they made to turn the detail into a Major Crimes unit]]. Daniels then brings up [[Recap/TheWireS02E10StormWarnings Prez]], and Valchek says he's going to charge punching him. Daniels points out everyone in the room wrote up a report on what happened, including Valchek calling Prez a "shitbird" and pushing him, and while he'd be able to get those on the detail to spin it Valchek's way, With the FBI agents who were there are another story. Valchek paces around the room, and sets his conditions; Prez has to ride a desk in the southeastern district for two months putting pressure on the midnight shift, personally apologize to Valchek, and write a letter of apology to everyone in the room, after which he doesn't care what Prez does.

Burrell asks what's left of the case; Rhonda says they've arrested everyone on the wiretap except for Spiros (as they were hoping he could lead them to the main boss), but he's in the wind, Reese adds the FBI is mostly interested in the union and, with Frank dead, they can't lay many charges there, and
union, Rawls still wants to know who was responsible for the murdered prostitutes (though he's interested mostly for his demands a clearance rate). Just then, Daniels gets a phone call from Lester, who tells him about Nick.

Back in
for the interrogation room, Kima tells Bubbles he hasn't given them anything to make his charges go away. [=McNulty=] asks if there's been any Jane Doe murders, the Greeks prepare to leave Baltimore, and Bubbles says there hasn't been, but he [[Recap/TheWireS02E10StormWarnings does bring up Brother Mouzone shooting Cheese]], Nick turns himself in. The detail follows one final piece of evidence in Philadelphia, and [=McNulty=] is surprised and excited to learn about Stringer cements his deal with Prop Joe, with Avon's crew working together with Proposition Joe.

Santangelo comes by, and [=McNulty=] confirms they have to let Bubbles and Johnny go, which doesn't make Santangelo happy.
reluctant approval. When Bubbles and Johnny Weeks are released, and Bubbles asks to use the bathroom, Santangelo curtly tells him to use an alleyway.

Once the door closes, Aimee complains about the place, and Nick,
arrested trying to lighten things up a little, reminds her [[Recap/TheWireS02E03HotShots she wanted her own place]].

Back at the detail office, Lester shows Beadie, Bunk and Daniels the photos he got. He asks Bunk if there were any photos
steal supplies from the ship, and Bunk says there might be.

Carver says [[Recap/TheWireS02E09StrayRounds Colvin]] has
an opening in the Western for a sergeant in a flex squad, and since he has stripes, he's going for it. He stomps off.

Kima
ambulance, Bubbles alerts Greggs and [=McNulty=] are staking out the Terrace, observing Avon to Joe and Proposition Joe's crews working together. Kima's pager goes off.

Beadie and Bunk are at the Philadelphia shipyard, and a guard says he doesn't remember anything out of the ordinary that happened at the port,
Stringer's alliance, and the guy who was on guard duty the night the "Atlantic Light" was there can't see, but they have videotapes of that night.

Kima joins Cheryl at a baby store, and Cheryl
newly formed MCU is far more excited about it than Kima is, which tempers Cheryl's mood once she realizes this.

This
handed its first case.

Who came at you?", at which point Brother Mouzone finally looks up, stares at Stringer for several seconds, and dismisses him. Stringer leaves.

* DownerEnding: The docks are close, putting a lot of men out of work, the prostitution and drug trades still go on, and the Greek and Spiros slip away unscathed. Even the fact the detail has now become a permanent crime-fighting unit (not to mention the fact with Proposition Joe and Stringer partnering up, they have a viable target) and that the murders were ultimately put down doesn't mitigate this.

Back at the detail office, Daniels tries to apologize to Carver and Herc, but they're not having it; Herc points out how low they are on the totem pole in general, and Carver agrees. Daniels points out the job they do is more than "rip-and-run", but that doesn't mollify them either. Carver says [[Recap/TheWireS02E09StrayRounds Colvin]] has an opening in the Western for a sergeant in a flex squad, and since he has stripes, he's going for it]]. He stomps off.

Fitz joins the detail, and says he has a line on Rados; he's just a normal K-Street lawyer. He also has a line on another shipment coming in.

to:

Lester is alone at the detail office with Nick when Fitz joins the detail, and says he has a line on Rados; comes in; he's just checked out Rados, who's nothing but a normal K-Street K-street lawyer. He also has a line on news of another shipment coming in.into the docks, which Lester compliments him on finding out.

[=McNulty=] asks if there's been any murders, and Bubbles says there hasn't been, but he [[Recap/TheWireS02E10 does bring up Brother Mouzone shooting Cheese]], and [=McNulty=] is surprised and excited to learn about Avon's crew working together with Proposition Joe.

Lester brings up [[Recap/TheWireS02E11Backwash the drugs Nick himself was dealing]], and Nick looks ashamed.

Fitz joins the detail, and says he has a line on Rados; he's just a normal K-Street lawyer. He also has a line on another shipment coming in.

Daniels looks askance at that, but compliments Valchek by telling him he was right about Frank, and that Burrell, as a result, is honoring [[Recap/TheWireS02E04 the deal they made to turn the detail into a Major Crimes unit]].
