* AdultFear: The opening scene, especially since Eda's curse is often used as an allegory for a chronic illness or disability. For people who struggle with that sort of thing, the idea of an especially bad flare-up happening out of nowhere, despite the fact that you felt fine earlier and have been taking your meds, is pretty upsetting. Especially since Eda ''passes out mid-conversation'' without the slightest hint anything is wrong beforehand, and the only person with her and paying attention at the time is her teenaged ward who isn't really in a position to help.

* WellIntentionedExtremist: The Bat Queen is antagonistic towards Luz, but she genuinely wants to protect Owlbert and the other abandoned palismans in her forest, and relents when Owlbert shows that he wants to go with Luz.
