When the gaurds ask for the papers, Varrick manages to bluff their way through by threatening to report the guards to Kuvira. Once they walk through, the guard notices their faces on some wanted posters and then all hell breaks loose.

* IfIWantedYouDead: [[InvertedTrope Inverted.]] After Bolin lavabends a moat between himself, Varrick, and the refugees, their leader points out that "if he wanted us dead," Bolin could have easily killed them. This revelation prompts the two camps to join forces in their escape.

** Prince Wu is completely this. Korra and company have to manhandle his royal personage to extricate him from his kidnappers several times because he is decidedly a NonActionGuy.

* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]], but Bolin is upset when he meets the innocent people Kuvira is interning in her camps, realizing that he has had a part (albeit unwittingly) in ruining their lives.

* ChainsawGood: Kuvira's mechs have built-in chainsaws, which they use to harvest the roots of the Banyan tree.

* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Downplayed, but Bolin is upset when he meets the innocent people Kuvira is interning in her camps, realizing that he has had a part (albeit unwittingly) in ruining their lives.

* {{Badass}}: Bolin proves his credentials once again in this episode, as it takes three mechs to fight him to a stalemate, while the entirety of the foot patrol and one other mech is facing around 8-9 benders.

* ConvectionSchmonvection: The usual problems with lavabending aside, Bolin uses it to burn the ropes binding his hands without burning himself.

* DevelopmentGag: Anah and Baraz's designs are based on concept art designs for Korra and Mako.

** A poster at the restaurant for Future Industries shows several women working on a generator, referencing Rosie the Riveter in World War II-era propaganda posters.

* AbhorrentAdmirer: Prince Wu has even ''less'' luck with Korra than he did with Asami, if that's even possible.

* CharacterDevelopment: Varrick actually shows genuine remorse and admits that he's a horrible person by inventing the spirit weapon. He even tries to carry Bolin to make up for his earlier mistreatment.

** Opal also mentions Kuvira and her army capturing her family in "The Battle of Zaofu".

** Korra tells Mako and Asami about her meeting with Toph, describing her as "an older, crankier version of Lin." Mako lampshades this, asking if that is even ''possible''.

* DidntSeeThatComing: Varrick hangs a lampshade on how the escaped prisoners weren't expecting Bolin's MagmaMan abilities.

* LetsYouAndHimFight: The prison camp escapees naturally aren't very willing to listen to anyone wearing an Earth Empire uniform.

** Prince Wu, on the other hand, is completely this. Korra and company have to manhandle his royal personage to extricate him from his kidnappers several times because he is decidedly a NonActionGuy.
* MacGyvering: Varrick's hastily assembled EMP device came to be through this.

** The mech pilots appear to have studied Bolin's last fight, as they now dodge his lavabending skillfully and try longer range fighting to take him out. And they fight 3-on-1...

* GenreSavvy:
** Despite Bataar's belief that there was no way they survived the explosion, Kuvira still sent out wanted posters of Bolin and Varrick to checkpoints in the empire.
** The border guards try to overwhelm Bolin with three mechs fighting at a distance so he can't just use his [[MagmaMan lavabending]] to take them out.

* WhamShot: The powerful vines (even ''moreso'' than the Republic City vines) Bataar is testing are from the swamp's Banyan tree. Toph will not be pleased.

* {{Foreshadowing}}: Mako notices that there's something "going on" between Asami and Korra. In the finale, what this is is revealed: [[spoiler:they're in love]].
