** The restaurant where the resistance is operating in Sainte Claire is named ''Le Coeur de Lion", "Lionheart", highly appropriate for brave French freedom-fighters trying to bring down Nazi occupiers. At the same time, it's a bit of DramaticIrony as this is also the famous sobriquet of England's [[UsefulNotes/RichardTheLionheart King Richard]], who not only spent far more of his reign in France than he did England (and in fact mostly knew and spoke only French, not English) but might well have been part of the Crusades scenario mentioned as happening offscreen.[[labelnote:*]]Although it's likely that ''Voyager'''s crew would have been playing roles on the Christian side, with Karr assuming the role of [[WorthyOpponent Saladin]] if it were the Third Crusade, it's equally as likely the Hirogen would have been impressed by and wished to play the role of Richard, thus making the Federation characters opposed to him.[[/labelnote]]

** Seven is preparing one of the grenades with a photonic upgrade that will make it harm only holographic items and characters, leaving organic beings untouched. She succeeds in doing so right as the invading Germans are just about to storm the Americans' barricade...and then gets shot, causing her to collapse and drop the grenade on their side of the barricade. Chakotay tries to either grab it or throw himself on it, but it goes off...[[FinaglesLaw and destroys their weapons and ammo instead, resulting in them all being captured]].

* IllKillYou: Katrine to Seven of Nine when she thinks 'Neuf' is contacting the Nazis (actually accessing the holodeck controls). She's pointing a pistol at Seven's head and the holodeck safety protocols were off, so Janeway would likely have killed the Borg if her neural interface hadn't been deactivated at that moment.

* {{Irony}}: Though it's never remarked on in-universe, Chakotay is cast on the holodeck as a loyal American captain while Janeway plays the role of a resistance fighter in Nazi-occupied France, reversing their (original) roles. Even better, the rebel group Chakotay was part of is named ''for'' [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maquis_(World_War_II) that very same French resistance]] (although the name originally referred to the scrub growth from the kind of terrain they usually operated in).

* JustInTime: Played with and even subverted multiple times, and almost all related to the neural interfaces.
** When the Doctor is preparing one of Seven's Borg implants to block the signal from her interface, he tells her that it will begin working "almost as soon as you're back in the simulation." When does it kick in? [[PlayedForLaughs Right as she's singing, resulting in her breaking off since she no longer has memory of the words]], which [[PlayedForDrama also draws suspicion from the Hirogen as well as her fellow resistance fighters]] (see the bullet points below).
** Within the World War II holodeck simulation, there is a subplot as to whether the resistance fighters can trust "Mademoiselle de Neuf" since some of her actions and attitudes suggest she might be a Nazi mole. (Whether this is true in the original holonovel the scenario is based on is never revealed.) Thanks to Seven being freed of her interface, the actions she subsequently takes (forgetting how to properly arm the grenades, tapping into the holodeck computer panel) cause "Katrine" to conclude she is a traitor. She prepares to shoot her...and at that exact moment the Doctor succeeds (after initially being prevented by a Hirogen) in shutting off her interface, restoring her memories as Janeway and saving Seven's life.
** Later, Tuvok (still in his holodeck character persona) continues to be suspicious of Seven despite Janeway vouching for her. Before he can act on her possible treachery, Janeway and Chakotay succeed in destroying the console in Sickbay controlling everyone's interfaces...but right after that, they all get captured by the joint forces of the Germans and the Hirogen. So not only are they immediately unable to do anything with their newfound restored identities, they have no knowledge of the simulated resistance, requiring Seven to fill them in on what's been happening both on and off the holodeck and depriving B'Elanna of any knowledge she could have used to sway the German Kapitan.

* MeaningfulName:
** Aside from Seven's holodeck name mentioned under BilingualBonus, Janeway's holodeck name is "Katrine", the French equivalent of Kathryn. Whether this is a ContrivedCoincidence or Karr choosing it for [[WorthyOpponent an enemy he respected]] is left unexplained, but seeing as there was no indication of a similar view toward Seven, it's likely just in-universe coincidence.

* SpotTheImposter: Every true American boy knows that Creator/BettyGrable has great gams. Fortunately Harry remembers the right answer before Tom shoots him. Made more amusing by this being the sort of information that Paris, aficionado of 20th-century pop culture as he (somewhat) is, is likely to have known himself, suggesting it's some of his own knowledge/personality coming through in the character, though this would also explain how Harry knew the right answer.

* TheExtremistWasRight: Karr is perceived as a sadist by the Voyager crew because of his torturous games and an extremist by his own people because of his unconventional beliefs on change. After inflicting countless life-threatening injuries on the crew in order to examine their fortitude and spirit, he explains that his actual objective is to utilize Voyager's holographic technology in order to prevent the Hirogen from hunting themselves into extinction by providing them with a means of simulating prey without having to scour the galaxy looking for it. Only after weeks of bloodshed do the few surviving Hirogen begin to understand the logic of their Alpha's philosophy; realizing that his holographic substitution method was the only possible solution.

* GoodAllAlong: At least, for a somewhat loose definition of "good". Karr brainwashes the Voyager crew into becoming pawns in elaborate war games; killing them over and over again, only for the Doctor to revive them and send them back in to die. However, these acts of cruelty actually SAVED their lives by preventing the Hirogen from exterminating them "en masse." It also transpires that Karr was merely experimenting with the ship's holographic technology in order to provide his people with an alternative to actually dispersing themselves across the galaxy and hunting real prey, thereby saving the protagonists' lives along with the lives of the Hirogen themselves. Even Janeway herself admits that his intentions are in everyone's best interests.
