* TimTaylorTechnology: As Voyager is pulled into the black hole with the Hirogen vessels, Janeway orders the anti-matter injectors cranked up to 120%, despite the risk of a warp core breach.

* EvilIsBigger: The [[VillainOfTheWeek Alpha and Beta]] tower over [[DistressedDude Tuvok]] and [[DamselInDistress Seven]].

** Chakotay and B'Elanna not being familiar with the Dominion is arguably one in the larger context of the 24th Century era. They were pulled into the Delta Quadrant circa early Season Three of ''Deep Space Nine'' and thus after the disastrous [[Recap/StarTrekDeepSpaceNineS02E26TheJemHadar first contact]] with the Jem'Hadar and Starfleet's [[Recap/StarTrekDeepSpaceNineS03E01TheSearchPartI early clashes]]. It ''could'' be justified as Chakotay's cell being understandably more focused on the Cardassians than on whatever the hell was happening on the other side of the Wormhole (in addition to how much information Starfleet had and hadn't released to the public at this point).

* LostTechnology: The alien network is at least 100,000 years old, with each relay station powered by a tiny black hole!

* TestosteronePoisoning: As much the '[[SpeciesOfHats hat]]' of the Hirogen as their HuntingTheMostDangerousGame. Big men with [[{{BFG}} big f**king guns]] engaging in alpha-male dominance games, manly boasting, and mindless competition.

* HopeSpot: ''Voyager'' makes contact with home only to have that link yanked away from them. They won't re-establish contact until "Pathfinder" in Season 6.

* GiantMook: The Alpha and Beta tower over Tuvok and Seven.

Starfleet sends a signal to ''Voyager'' along the network of relay stations, containing messages from the family and friends of the crew. But a Hirogen hunting party is not pleased by aliens using 'their' network, and captures Seven and Tuvok when they're sent to repair it.

* BadassBoast: Seven and Tuvok deliver them on behalf of Captain Janeway.

* BrutalHonesty: Clearly fishing for compliments, the Doctor boasts to Seven about his role in establishing contact with the Alpha Quadrant. The Borg sticks a pin in his ego bubble.

** Seven asks about the Vulcan reputation for not lying. Tuvok replies that he has done so under orders, referring to his original role as TheMole among the Maquis.

* ForcedToWatch: The Alpha orders Tuvok gutted first, so Seven can watch it happening.

* VillainBall: Our initial introduction to the Hirogen is not impressive, as the Alpha is too eager for unique trophies to wait for help in taking down ''Voyager'', and the other Hirogen ignore Janeway's warning about the black hole. Unfortunately later Alpha's will be smarter.

* DeletedScene: A UPN television promo for Voyager's fifth season included some dialogue cut from this episode. ''Arrgh, dammit Chakotay!''
