While on an Away Mission, Neelix is attacked by an alien who surgically removes his lungs.

to:

While on an Away Mission, Neelix is attacked by an alien who surgically removes his lungs. While the Doctor keeps him alive by creating a pair of holographic lungs in Sickbay, ''Voyager'' goes after the aliens and finds out that they did so because they and their society have contracted a disease called "the phage", which requires constant organ replacements for the victims to survive. They offer to transplant a willing donor's lung into Neelix to replace the ones he lost, saying that they have the technology to make the organs of any species compatible with another, and Kes decides to be the donor so that Neelix will survive.
