Previous villainous team leaders never fought Ash in a Pokémon battle before with the exception of Giovanni in Meoletta Arc (and even that was merely a brief skirmish instead of a proper battle). Here, Lysandre fights both Ash and Alain with his [[WeaponOfChoice two iconic Pokémon, Pyroar and Mega Gyarados]].
* WeaponOfChoice: In addition to Pyroar, Lysandre also has his vicious Gyarados on hand which he can Mega-Evolve. And it's also a Shiny Gyarados to boot.

* HeroicBSOD: Alain [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone breaks into despair]] once he learns that the Mega Evolution he has gathered through all of his battles has been used to fuel Team Flare's mind control device to control Zygarde. Alain also believes that his actions cost him his friendship with Mairin and Ash. However, through Ash's words of encouragement, Alain not only snaps out of his depression but also realizes that he is wrong, as he now sees the true meaning of friendship and that his two friends will always have his back. Alain also decided to set things right by turning against Team Flare and rescuing the rest of Ash's Pokémon.

* HeroicBSOD: Alain [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone breaks into despair]] once he learns that the Mega Evolution he has gathered through all of his battles has been used to fuel Team Flare's mind control device to control Zygarde. Also, Alain believed that his actions caused him to lose his friendship with Mairin and Ash. However, realizing that Mairin didn’t hold [[EasilyForgiven anything against him for being harsh with her]] and thorough Ash’s words of assurances that their still friends despite everything he did, Alain not only realized the true meaning of friendship but also decided to set things right with them by rescuing their Pokémon.

** Squishy kept trying to reach out to Z-2 during its battle against it, but failed and ended up being controlled as well.
** Upon witnessing Lysandre attempts to control his Trainer and best friend, Pikachu was able to get through to Ash by calling out to him, which worked as he not only heard his voice but also got him to fight back, even getting Greninja to do the same thing.

* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Ash tells this to Alain as he fights off the Mega Evolution energy, saying that it doesn't matter what his actions may have caused in past and that the Alain he knows would not give up so easily. This allows Alain to finally understand the real meaning of strength and friendship as he takes a stand against Lysandre.

* WorldOfCardboardSpeech: Ash gives one to Lysandre and Alain of who he is:
