Added DiffLines:

* AlwaysABiggerFish: Captain Randall has grown accustomed to menacing the Frasers at will. He attempts to do so at Versaille only to get a reminder that he is not an apex predator in France, which is beyond his military jurisdiction. King Louis, who has taken a liking to the Frasers, immediately cottons to the tension between Claire and Randall and spends the rest of the scene mocking Randall who can do nothing but stand silently while he's insulted by the King.

* PresentCompanyExcluded: Taking an immediate dislike to Captain Randall, King Louis remarks on how oafish the English are and how much difficulty they generally have with the French language. He does make sure to tell Claire that this generalization does not include her, as she is lovely as are her language skills.

Added DiffLines:

* UnexplainedRecovery: Captain Randall was last seen lying on the floor, bleeding from his head, after being knocked down and trampled by nearly two dozen cattle. In a time where internal surgery was rare and brain injuries were inherently fatal, his survival with no more than chronic back pain is nigh inexplicable.

Added DiffLines:

* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Alex is regretfully willing to forego marrying Mary so as not to doom her to a life of poverty.
* LanguageFluencyDenial: Played with. St Germain and Jamie both speak French and English. However, they refuse to speak each other's dominant language as a way of blatantly snubbing the other's culture. This results in conversations where, despite sharing ''two'' common languages, Jamie only speaks to St Germain in English and St Germain will only respond in French.

* BlamingTheVictim: After being raped, Mary is labeled "soiled goods" and the agreement for her arranged marriage is scrapped. Her uncle has confined her to the house and she's to be shipped back home to England once she heals from her injuries.

Added DiffLines:

* TheTimeTravellersDilemma: After indicating that she plans to marry Alex Randall, Mary gives Claire a letter to deliver to the prison which will free Alex from accusations of raping her. Claire considers burning the letter because Frank's family bible indicates that Mary is fated to marry ''Jack'' Randall. Burning the letter and leaving Alex to die of consumption in prison might be the best way to ensure Frank's existence but it would be at the cost of the life of an innocent man.
