* SeriesContinuityError: An internal one where the show somehow forgets that portal outlets don't move. Max is on a plane when he enters the one that takes him to the island where most of the episode takes place. After the portal's [[ReversePolarity re-polarized]] so that it goes backward, Max and his friends come out in the bathroom of the same plane. As in the episode seems to have concluded ''the portal is in that specific airplane bathroom'', and not that the plane was flying through it when Max went in before.

* MultipleHeadCase: The Hydra, of course, but only two heads in this case. One representing light, the other darkness.

* AdaptationExpansion: All the episodes add a lot to turn a two-row comic strip on the back of a blister pack into a 23-minute episode, of course. The story of "The Hand" playset was that Max found himself in a haunted cemetery fighting zombies and a talking tree, none of which made it into the episode. Instead the extremely vague mention of a "scarab ring" in a text box was expanded into a whole episode about Egyptian mythology.

* XanatosGambit: [[spoiler: Skullmaster knew Warmonger would try to kill him and take control of Hydra. That was his whole plan: he set everything up to make Max use up the sun spell that defeats Hydra, because then he wouldn't be able to use it on Skullmaster.]]

Skullmaster uses the magic of the Lemurian Grimoire to try to upset the balance between light and darkness by mind-controlling the titan Hydra. Warmonger has a plan of his own, and seizing control of Hydra, blasts Skullmaster into oblivion.
