In the kingdom of Logres (which encompasses Great Britain and much of Gaul), the castle of Kaamelott is built, the court is established, and King Arthur and his knights gather around a round table. They discuss the Holy Grail, administrate the kingdom and retell their epic adventures and victories for the glory of the Gods and the people. Everything is seemingly set to ensure the success of the Quest of the Holy Grail... except not. Arthur quickly realizes that his court and knights, despite not lacking of motivation, aren't up to speed with him in many ways.

Ten years have passed since Arthur renounced the throne of and disappeared. Lancelot Lac has usurped the throne and established a reign of terror over the kingdom of Logres. The Knights of the Round Table have disbanded and formed pitiful pockets of resistance against Lancelot. Everyone wonders what happened to Arthur, from Lancelot (who wants him dead and put a bounty on his head) all the way to the oppressed smallfolk (who want him to return). Arthur is eventually found by a bounty hunter and brought back to Logres and, suffice to say, he's not keen on becoming king again.

Things don't improve between Arthur and Lancelot. Arthur has troubles putting up with Lancelot's rigorism and elitism, and Lancelot holds Arthur's ways to govern (with laidbackness and flexibility) in contempt. Arthur also falls in love with Mevanwi, the wife of one of his knights, Karadoc.

Arthur's kingdom is under the threat of barbarian invasions. Unification of the kingdom's clans allows to fend off the invasions. Arthur does his best to govern with the bumbling and relatively incompetent knights he's surrounded by, who accomplish quests with more or less success. Not everything is going well: Arthur and his trusted second-in-command Lancelot start becoming acrimonious to each other, and Arthur's unhappy love life doesn't help him with his chronic despair.
