Removing trope misuse. DEM is for when nothing in the established setting seems capable of fixing a problem. This stick has been hidden for thousands of years because it's considered such a dangerous power, but no-one knows what it actually does. This is one of the early signs of that reputed power in action. It's not DEM, it's part of the plotline exploring what the stick and its power really is.

* DeusExMachina: The SWAT team enters Bud's shop and Nick gives himself up rather than get anyone hurt. When he's searched, someone finds the stick in his jacket and takes it... causing a ring of energy to blast the SWAT guys, knocking them all out. The gang take the SWAT van until they can ditch it.
-->'''Eve:''' Maybe they shouldn't have tried to take that from you.

!!This episode provides examples of:

* AddictiveMagic: The stick seems to be bonding to Nick in an unhealthy way. The gang are concerned that it's affecting him as well as helping him, and
* AllForNothing: The gang forcing Renard into a "Trust Me Knot" spell with Nick, enforcing an agreement where Adalind will give Renard an alibi for Rachel's murder in exchange for Renard calling off the warrants against Nick and reinstating him. Renard uses his Black Claw judge to dodge the murder charge, thereby preventing Adalind from testifying for him and letting Renard out of his end. * BloodMagic: The "Trust Me Knot" spell is sealed with Adalind's blood.
* DownerEnding: Renard has successfully dodged the charges related to Rachel's murder, leaving no way for the gang to pressure him to call off the manhunt against Nick.
* JustShootHim: Increasingly Wu's attitude to Renard. Unfortunately, that wouldn't help Nick.
* LetMeGetThisStraight: Between Renard and Adalind, when he calls her in to discuss his murder charges. Renard was with Bonaparte at the time of the murder, but can't say that as Bonaparte is dead now, having been killed by Renard.
-->'''Adalind:''' So you expect me to be your alibi for a murder you didn't commit because you were actually murdering the person who was your alibi?\\
'''Renard:''' Basically, yeah.
* TitleDrop: The "Trust Me Knot" is a Hexenbiest ritual that enforces a bargain between two people. The first one to break their end is strangled with the rope.
