* CallBack: Mal really should've listened to Kaylee back during the pilot about that coil. The damage from its failure was even ''worse'' than she predicted.

* CoitusUninterruptus: We see a flashback where Mal goes to the engine room to get a status report on repairs to find his mechanic-at-the-time Bester busily putting it to a local girl with a starship fetish. Bester had...a hard time pulling himself away from his new friend to tell Mal why the ship wasn't fixed yet. But the girl in question is Kaylee, who proceeds to impress Mal by correctly diagnosing and fixing the engine problem. It's even implied that they'd only been doing it in the engine room in the first place because Kaylee wanted get a look at the engines, and was busy diagnosing the problem while he was occupied. Kaylee ''really'' likes engines.

* MacGuffin: Whatever "the stuff" that Mal's crew and Marco's were competing over in the Jayne flashback is never identified. All that's important is that it was valuable and a higher-than-seven-percent cut of it was enough to get Jayne to turn on Marco and join Mal.

** While arguing with Zoe about hiring Wash, Mal mentions that they recently acquired a "genius mechanic", implying that Kaylee had already joined the crew by that point... and then said "genius" turns out to be Bester, with Kaylee's actual introduction happening in a later flashback.
