Meanwhile, Dodd orders his henchman Virgil to kill Ed, accompanied by Bear's son Charlie (Allan Dobrescu). Peggy heeds Lou's warning and plans to leave for California, but Ed insists on staying. Peggy nearly leaves without him, but through a change of heart, sells her car to mechanic Sonny Greer (Daniel Beirne) to

Ronald Reagan’s election campaign passes through Luverne, Minnesota while the Kansas City men prepare for a day of hunting deer. Hanzee, meanwhile, returns to Gerhardt headquarters and informs them that Rye was murdered by “the butcher.” Dodd concludes that “the butcher” is a codename for a contract killer hired by Kansas City to take care of Rye to gain some leverage on the family before the initial deal was even proposed.

In the middle of their hunting spree, Joe Bulo and the other Kansas City men in the woods are attacked by Gerhardt gunmen. The Kicthen brothers take out a majority of the goons, but Hanzee slices one’s throat and knocks out the other. Joe Bulo runs back to the cars, where he finds Hanzee waiting for him.

Reagan finishes up a speech and Lou escorts his campaign bus to its next stop. Peggy, meanwhile, tries to convince her husband to run away to California, but Ed is determined to buy the butcher shop and try to live a normal life. Dodd, meanwhile, is on his way into Luverne to find a man who will take care of Ed when he’s stopped by Charlie.

-->'''Charlie:''' Should be us. A Gerhardt. He killed a Gerhardt, so it should be one of us. The real boss would know that.

Dodd concedes and sends Charlie off to take care of Ed, and Simone also speeds off to meet with Mike at his hotel. She finds Mike and Gale Kitchen quiet in the wake of their fallen men, including Joe Bulo, who’s head has been sent to Mike and sits in his room. Angrily, Mike tells her that she has to tell them what her family is going to do before they act, otherwise he won’t save her.

Ben Schmidt calls Lou to inform him about the dead men found by the woods up in Fargo, and Lou fills him in on the developments with the Rye Gerhardt case. He proposes they meet up tomorrow after he’s done escorting Reagan, and Schmidt obliges. Charlie, meanwhile, walks into the butcher shop with the intent of murder with no witnesses. Without meaning to, he strikes up a cute conversation with Noreen before Ed walks in. Unable to bring himself to kill them both, he buys some meat and returns to the car.

At home, Peggy packs her bags before going in to the auto shop to pick up her car. On a whim, she decides to sell her car to Sonny for $700 despite his insistence that it’s worth more. In the meantime, Hanzee returns to the Gerhardt house, where Bear thanks him for all the services he’s done for their family. Dodd is mad that Bear talked to Hanzee before speaking to him, but shrugs him off for enjoying taking orders from their mother.

Charlie walks back into the shop and walks in the back to shoot Ed. Noreen notices first and gets Ed’s attention, prompting Charlie to miss his first shot and hit the electric box instead. A fire starts spreading throughout the back room, and Virgil, the Gerheardt enforcer sent with Charlie, busts in the back to finish the job. Virgil takes a shot that ricochets and knocks Charlie out, and after a struggle, Ed kills him with a butcher knife. Noreen makes it out alive, and Ed drags Charlie out, makes sure Noreen tells the authorities the truth, and runs off.

Simone comes home, where her father threatens to beat her for going out before her grandma intervenes and lets her go. That night, Lou goes into town to survey the scene at the butcher shop. Ed returns home with the intention of packing up and leaving, but Peggy excitedly tells him that she’s sold the car so he can buy the shop. He fills her in on what happened and informs her that they need to start packing, but their stopped when police sirens begin sounding outside their door.

* GoodIsDumb:
** Reagan means well, but he's utterly out-of-touch and his grip on reality is a little tenuous. When speaking privately with Lou, he unintentionally reveals just how delusional and insensitive he can be. In a sincere but misguided attempt to bond with Lou, he compares Lou's wartime experience to his fictional portrayal of a soldier. He talks about it as if it were a real event and was actually there, but then he can't quite remember how it ended. The point is lost, and when Lou appeals to this well-loved authority figure for some advice, his response exposes that he doesn't have the answers. He may not have even thought about the answers. See the quote at the top of the page.
** Sonny is extremely polite to Peggy when she picks up her car despite the obvious fact that she's going to cancel the check she pays with before he can cash it.
