While in jail, Mr. Wrench and Mr. Numbers obtain Malvo's name from Lester. They are released but Lester, whose hand has become severely infected after being hit by one of the shot gun pellets that Malvo used to kill Vern, is taken to the hospital. Molly Solverson rides in the ambulance and tries to get more information from Lester, though he is slightly delirious. She presents her evidence to Chief Oswalt, who is beginning to realize that all the recent events are related.

With Stavros close to paying the blackmail demand, Malvo locks Chumph in his kitchen pantry overnight to prevent him from ruining the scheme. Malvo takes Stavros home and leaves. He spots Grimly parked by the road near the house and later follows Grimly to his home, but is confronted in his car by Grimly's neighbor. He threatens the neighbor before driving away.

* CloseKnitCommunity: Apparently, Grimly lives in one.
* TheDitz: Chumph is so happy about Milos agreeing to pay up money that he distractedly gives Malvo everything he needs to lock him in the closet, and then just walks in at his request.
* DramaticIrony: Grimly's neighbor encounters Malvo, the guy Grimly is trying to find.

one. It seems to be true, given what little information we're given - its residents are certainly comfortable going over to each others' buildings late at night to casually tell stories. We also hear Gus answering an unknown boy's math question (presumably for homework) on Malvo's police scanner, with no indication that this is out of the ordinary for him.
* TheDitz: Chumph is so happy about Milos agreeing to pay up money the million dollars that he distractedly gives Malvo everything he needs to lock him in the closet, and then just walks in at his request.
* DramaticIrony: Grimly's neighbor encounters Malvo, the guy Grimly is trying to find. Also, the irony of Stavros not knowing that Malvo is the guy messing with him continues.

* IHaveThisFriend: Gus frames his doubts about the case to Ari this way, prompting the parable.

-->'''Neighbor''': -->'''Ari''': It's a parable.parable.
* MissedHimByThatMuch: Gus is walking into his house and on the phone with Marge discussing the case and how he doesn't know what to look for as Malvo ''pulls up behind him''. Ergh.

* NotNowKiddo: Stavros' son wants to tell him about the guy who bought the locusts at the local pet store but his father won't let him.

Added DiffLines:

* RichesToRags: The rich man in the parable gives away all of his money on hearing of all the suffering in the world.
* SayingTooMuch: Molly is interrogating Lester in the ambulance and is pressing him about how he got the shotgun pellet in his hand. Lester is going into septic shock and mutters that he "didn't pay him". Molly jumps on this hint at a possible connection between Lester and Malvo and later lets herself into his house to investigate because of it.
* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: Turns out, having a shotgun pellet embedded in your hand means that the wound only gets worse. In this case, it gets infected, and Lester goes into septic shock and has to be rushed to the hospital. He doesn't lose the hand, but the doctor who treats him says that it's a close thing.
* TimeLapse: A brief one, of Lester's RedRightHand getting worse and worse, to symbolize his growing descent into villainy.
* {{Touche}}: Bill has this reaction when Molly points out that since Ida kicked him and his fellow officers out of her room for being loud, she probably isn't happy about them being loud in the hall either, as he then announces to his fellows that they're leaving.

tries to get more information from Lester, though he is slightly delirious.

Lester goes to buy a pack of irregular socks, but the clerk offers to throw him in a 12-gage shotgun for fifty-five dollars. He takes the offer and puts the gun away for protection, getting it out a little while later when he invites Malvo over to clean up the mess he made murdering his wife. Malvo, of course, uses the gun to murder Chief Thurman, and Lester’s hand is injured by a shotgun pellet in the process, leaving him presently sitting in a jail cell with a nasty infection between Mr. Wrench and Numbers.

Numbers and Wrench stare Lester down, and when he won’t admit who killed Sam Hess, Numbers presses down hard on his wound while Wrench muffles his yell with a sock. They take the sock out and Lester gives them the name Lorne Malvo. Numbers and Wrench make bale, and as soon as they leave, Lester throws up.

Molly goes into work and tells Bill about a call placed from Lester’s house to a motel that Lorne Malvo was staying in the night of the murders. Bill starts seeing the dots connect, and agrees that Lester should be talked to.

Gus looks up Frank Peterson online and finds a couple of hits, but gets no results for Lorne Malvo, who is meanwhile buying a police scanner and a walkie talkie. Malvo places a call to Milos from Chumph’s house and records Milos blubbering about breaking his promise with God and deserving his punishments. He informs Malvo that he’s planning on paying the million dollars. Chumph is ecstatic until Malvo locks him in his own closet.

Bill and Molly confront Lester, who’s become delusional in the holding cell. He’s placed in an ambulance and rushed to the hospital. On the way over, Molly asks a nearly unintelligible Lester if he paid Lorne Malvo to kill Sam Hess.

-->'''Lester:''' I never paid him.

In a parking lot somewhere, Wrench and Numbers collect information about Lorne Malvo while Gus talks to his neighbor, Ari, from the building over. When Gus asks for his advice about whether or not people should put themselves in danger to prove evidence of someone else’s misdemeanors, Ari recites a parable about a rich man who gave away everything he could to end suffering and ended up killing himself so that others could use his organs.

-->'''Ari:''' Only a fool thinks he can solve the world’s problems.
-->'''Gus:''' Yeah, but ya gotta try, don’t ya?

Malvo drives Milos to the supermarket, where Milos picks up the blackmail money and tells his son to pack his bags so that he can be taken somewhere safe. Molly hangs around the hospital, where she’s told she won’t be able to talk to Lester for a while. She heads over to the Nygaard residence and looks in the back of the washing machine for evidence, but finds nothing.

While driving Stavros Milos back to his house, Malvo sees Gus Grimly searching the road he arrested him on, but makes sure Gus can’t see him driving. When they arrive, Milos tells Malvo he can stay the night, but their partnership is over. Gus gets a call from Molly and takes it outside his apartment, allowing Malvo to watch him and listen in on his call via police scanner, but Ari knocks on the window of his vehicle and tells him to leave. After a hostile conversation, Malvo drives off.

Outside Ida’s hospital room, Bill shares with Molly that he and the rest of the officers were kicked out for being too loud. Molly joins Ida inside and meets the newborn, informing her that she’s trying really hard to solve the case. Before she goes, Molly checks in on Lester’s room, where he pretends to be asleep so that she leaves.
