* LawyerFriendlyCameo: Due to there still being some legal issues between Creator/TheBBC and Creator/TerryNation, the Daleks aren't shown on-screen or referred to by name in the Doctor's hallucinations, and are only referenced in the form of a very obviously Dalek-reminiscent voice shouting out "Destroy! Exterminate! Annihilate!" [[note]]The voice was provided by Hayden Jones, who played Lenny Vosper on-screen in this story and had also provided the Auton voice in [[Recap/DoctorWhoS8E1TerrorOfTheAutons the previous one]]. This conveniently meant that not only did they save money on hiring a voice actor just to deliver these few words of dialogue, but had Nation kicked up a stink, the production team could have claimed it was actually the Autons whose voice the Doctor was hearing.[[/note]]

The Master uses the evil impulses stored in his machine (which is actually just a case for an alien parasite) to cause unrest at Stangmoor and then convinces the convicts to hijack the Thunderbolt missile, which he plans to aim at the peace conference and start WorldWarThree.

The Doctor and Jo visit Stangmoor Prison, where a new machine is to be demonstrated by Professor Emil Keller. The Keller Machine will apparently extract all negative thoughts and impulses from even the most hardened criminals, but when a prisoner collapses while undergoing the treatment, the Doctor's scepticism looks justified.

The Doctor goes to the peace conference and helps the Brigadier foil another assassination, this time of the American delegate. The culprit is found to be Chinese Captain Chin Lee, but she has been hypnotised by the Master -- who is currently posing as Professor Emil Keller...

This story, despite being filmed in colour, for a long time existed only in black-and-white, as the original colour tapes had been lost. For the DVD release in 2013, the second to sixth episodes were recoloured using the automated chroma dot colour recovery method, while the first, whose films did not have chroma dots, was recolourised manually with the help of Stuart Humphryes, more commonly known as [[http://babelcolour.com/ Babelcolour]], a fan editor-turned-PromotedFanboy known for his high-quality colourisations of clips from the show's first six seasons (which were filmed on monochrome videotape).

* SuspiciouslyAproposMusic: The Master listens to an excerpt from a piece of music known as "The Devil's Triangle". This was presumed to be an in-joke, i.e. implying that the Master is the Devil. Although on the face of it, the music piece is a 1970 instrumental number by Music/KingCrimson, it is based on a much earlier classical piece by Gustav Holst, written in the 1920s, called "Mars, the Bringer of War".

** This caused some distress to Creator/RogerDelgado initially, as he did not smoke and actually hated tobacco. But as a trouper, he acceded to the cigar at director Timothy Coombs' request, as Coombes thought it would make The Master look more sinister. He was right, but The Master does not smoke in any other episode.
