* PowerWalk: Darla and her gang do one as they approach the Bronze. Darla is practically skipping along with merriment.

** Angel is seen in partial sunlight. At this point they hadn't fleshed out his character beyond a guy that randomly shows up to give advice. He is also more laid-back and less broody. Future episodes will show that most of the time, especially when combined with snark and leather pants, this is a ''very'' bad thing.

* YouAreGrounded: Before the raid on the Bronze, Buffy stops at home for supplies. Joyce confronts her in her room; the principal called her because of the classes that she skipped, and she is officially grounded. Buffy tries to impress the importance of this evening on her mother. "I know," says Joyce, "If you don't go out [[DramaticIrony it will be the end of the world]]."

* YouMayPanicNow: To kick off the Harvest, Luke takes the stage and tells the crowd that there is no cause for alarm. Since he's [[SinisterSilhouettes backlit]], nobody can tell that he's a vampire. As someone flicks a spotlight on him, he admits that "Actually, there ''is'' cause for alarm. It just won't do any good."

* TheBait: The Master uses Jessie as this, knowing that Buffy will come to rescue him. The twist is that he turns Jesse as part of the trap.

* RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil: Jesse [[KickTheDog pins down and straddles Cordelia in the Bronze, then complains when she resists]]. The opening scene with Luke and Buffy also evokes this trope.

* TranshumanTreachery: Apparently averted, since according to Giles the old Jesse is gone. However, the events of later episodes complicate things, raising the possibility that this trope is in play.

* YouHaveFailedMe: The Master is displeased with Colin for failing to capture Buffy, but reasons that it just means there will be [[WorthyOpponent someone good for him to kill]] when he's free. It would be nice if Colin would at least apologize, though.

* RealityEnsues: See NegatedMomentOfAwesome. Buffy partially subverts this by using her Slayer skills to jump the gate after Principal Flutie locks it.

* PoliceAreUseless: Thoroughly {{Justified|Trope}}. Willow suggests calling the cops, but Giles explains that they wouldn't believe them and Buffy explains that they wouldn't be able to handle vamps anyway.

* HopeSpot: Buffy and Xander find Jesse in the sewers seemingly unharmed and he says that he knows a way out. The three run and reach a dead end. When Xander asks what to do now:

* WaitHere: Xander is told to stay put. Naturally, he disregards Buffy -- ostensibly to save Jesse, but there's a degree of machismo at stake. Ended up working out though since he does help pull her free from the vampire that grabs her leg, raising it enough that the sunlight forces it to let go.
* WeirdnessCensor: For the first time, and certainly not the last, the citizenry of Sunnydale completely fail to notice the horrors in their midst.
* WhamLine: Likewise doubling as a WhamShot. After Buffy, Xander and Jesse find themselves cornered in a room by vampires.

* ViewerFriendlyInterface: Willow's computer, with its helpful sound effects and animations while she's hacking the city computer system.
* VillainExitStageLeft: Darla has Giles pinned on the floor, but here comes Willow with a refreshing jar of holy water. She pelts Darla's face with it, sending her shrieking as she bolts for the exit.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Xander is all ready to charge into the Bronze and stop Jesse from "doing something ''more'' stupid than usual."

* VillainousBreakdown: The Master has one after he senses that Luke - the key to his plan to free himself - has been killed.

* UnnecessaryCombatRoll: Buffy does a few flips at the Bronze. Whedon comments that he wanted to avoid that as much as possible, because it's awfully stupid.

* TranshumanTreachery: Apparently averted, since according to Giles the old Jesse is gone. However, the events of later episodes complicate the matter, which raises the possibility that part of Jesse's behavior is this trope.
* TwoScenesOneDialogue: Giles exposits that since their overthrow by early cavemen, the demons have gone underground and waited for mankind to die out. Cut to -- speak of the demon! -- Luke and Darla manhandling Jesse into the Master's underground lair. The Master is displeased, and Darla and Luke make excuses, mentioning they encountered a powerful girl, possibly a Slayer. Back in the library, Xander wonders aloud what the hell is a Slayer supposed to be.

* ATruceWhileWeGawk: As vampire Jesse gives his speech, some henchvamps in the middle distance are shambling their way over.

* TranshumanTreachery: Jesse after turning.

* ThatManIsDead; Giles warns Xander to consider his friend already departed before they end The Bronze, stating if he meets him again, it's not Jesse but the thing that killed him. Jesse is of the same opinion, comparing his miserable failure of a human life to his newfound vampire mojo.
