* Ain't Too Proud to Say He's Wrong: J Jonah Jameson (who all Spider-Man fans know and loathe) talks up Hyperion on the news for most of the episode. By the end, though, he's turned around and started praising the Avengers again while decrying Hyperion.

* BitchInSheepsClothing: Hyperion initially seems like a good-natured superhero, being all warm and friendly to the Avengers, even in the face of their open distrust. Then he starts getting more aggressive, before finally revealing he and his squadmates were the villains of their world, and eventually destroyed it when no-one bowed down to them.

* Foreshadowing: Hyperion shows the Avengers images of his squadmates; Nighthawk, Power Princess, Speed Demon and Doctor Spectrum, who will appear in season 2.

* NoKillLikeOverkill: The fact that Hyperion uses this trope during fights is the Avengers' first tip-off that he's not exactly the good guy he seems to be.

* MythologyGag: Thor ends the episode by finishing his drink, declaring "ANOTHER!" and smashing it on the ground.

* PayEvilUntoEvil: Hyperion finally reveals his true colors when he tries to kill the Wrecker for escaping prison again, arguing that he's a crook who'll never reform. Cap actually agrees, but still thinks the Avengers have no right to kill him for it.
* ShootTheTV: Thor destroys a TV when Jameson goes on another rant. Since they're in a diner, Tony has to pay the extremely irritated owner for the damage.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: The episode doesn't actually clarify the fate of Hyperion's former squad, which will be followed up on eventually.

* BewareTheSuperman: Hyperion possesses the powers of flight, super strength, super speed, laser vision, invulnerability, super hearing, etc. And it's shown halfway through the episode that he's a complete narcissist who only cares about the world worshiping him for his abilities. If they don't...he gets mad.
* Expy: Hyperion is basically an evil version of DC's Superman.
* KickTheDog: While trying to calm a crowd (one that he scared when he started fighting the Avengers), a little kid throws a rock at him. It doesn't hurt him, but he picks up the kid and looks ready to drop him from several stories up just for insulting him.
