Lispel's car drives on a forest road and Lispel is still splashing around at the back. The chauffeur is still the same person, resigned to wearing a raincoat. They stop at Wannes' house by the lakee and Lispel orders the chauffeur to wait in place, before going to knock on the door. Wannes isn't angry anymore but greets him coldly, while Lispel says he has information and invites himself in. They drink at the table and Wannes is surprised to hear that Alfred's going to Atrique, asking why. Lispel asks what does he think and Wannes says that it obviously has something to do with the black ducks living in Alfred's house, asking if Alfred has been asked to smuggle something to Atrique. Lispel says that he's close and explains that the Wanas seem to be returning to Atrique, confusing Wannes who points out that they have citizenship and passports and they can live in Waterland. Wannes asks why would they want to go back and Lispel says he doesn't know, Wannes starts pacing and believes that something weird is going on. Lispel brings up Wannes' relatives in Atrique, and Wannes asks him if Alfred is going with the Wanas and if he does how are they traveling? Lispel asks if he can get "them" now and Wannes is confused, so Lispel angrily explains that he's obviously talking about the money, causing Wannes to call him greedy.

At night, Alfred and winnie are sitting on the rail of the bridge near Alfred's house and looking at the stars. Winnie tells Alfred that she's very worried, and asks if Alfred thinks her parents will get to return to Atrique. Alfred tells her not to worry and assures her that the captain is trustworthy and that Alfred himself is going with them. Winnie says that she knows, but worries about what's going to wait her father vack in Atrique. Alfred admits to her that he isn't very familiar with their country's situation, he ''has'' heard about the things the white geese do to the black ducks but he hasn't seen for himself. Winnie looks at Alfred and he resolves to help her parents to get into contact with the other people fighting oppression in Atrique. Winnie leans her beak towards Alfred but he leans away, so Winnie holds his wings instead. Alfred tells her that she doesn't need to worry about anything.

Tom watches them from a bench next to the house, sighing and looking sad and tired. Blanche comes outside and tells Tom to come inside and sleep, but Tom asks why doesn't Winnie have to go to sleep. Blanche sees Alfred and Winnie on the bridge and tells Tom that it's because she's older than him, and she propably has lots of things to talk about with Alfred. Tom asks Blanche if he can return to Atrique with her but she just tells him to not be silly, explaining that her and Kwa want him to stay here with Winnie. Tom protests that he wants to go with them and Blanche kneels next to him, telling him to not act like a baby. She tells him that they don't even know if her and Kwa can even live together once they get back, and the police will immediately try to arrest them when they notice they've returned. Tom cries and hugs Blanche who hugs him back and cries too, while Kwa comes outside and meets Blanche's gaze. Blanche lets go of Tom and tells him to sleep well and Tom tells both his parents good night and goes inside, while Kwa stays outside with Blanche. Blanche says that Tom is so young but Kwa assures her that Winnie will take care of him, and then asks where Winnie is. Blanche points her and Alfred out and Kwa says that he thought so, remarking that they're clearly in love and Blanche agrees. Kwa says that there's nothing to worry about and Blanche says that they don't need to worry for Winnie as long as she stays in Waterland.

Next day in the harbor Alfred waits on the ship's stairs as Kwa and Blanche say goodbye to Winnie and Tom, Kwa tells them to take care of themselves and Winnie cries again. The captain, Stoppel, comes to tell Alfred that they got a last-minute passenger who knew that the ship is going to Atrique's Cape Town. He asks if they can take the person aboard and Alfred says that of course they can, asking Stoppel if he told somebody they were going to Atrique. However Stoppel reveals that he did not and Alfred becomes suspicious, asking who the passenger is. Wannes shows up right then and Alfred remarks that it's been a long time, while Stoppel is surprised that they know each other. Alfred explains Stoppel that they went to same class in school and asks Wannes if he's the new passenger, and Wannes asks if that isn't allowed. Alfred says that of course it is, but remarks that very few people travel to Atrique these days. Wannes points out that Alfred is also going there and he admits it, and Wannes asks if he's traveling with "those blacks" right when Kwa and Blanche are coming up the stairs and hear him, causing them to stop and look at each other and him. Alfred tells Wannes that he is and that they're his friends and invited him to come over, while Wannes tells Alfred that he was invited by his cousin and comments how great the country is. Alfred says that surely he can't know about it so much, but Wannes claims that he knows much more than Alfred does because his cousin writes often. Alfred asks if that means Wannes knows about the segregation and Wannes says that of course he does, telling Alfred that it's a great thing. Alfred is dissappointed.

The ship leaves harbor and Alfred, Kwa, and Blanche wave to Winnie and Tom at the pier while they're shouting goodbyes. Tom runs along the pier to wave a little longer and Winnie stands next to him with her wings on his shoulders, while Alfred, Kwa, and Blache quietly watch them. Alfred nods to Winnie with conviction but she doesn't respond and the ship goes away. On the ship Blanche is crying again and Kwa comforts her, while Wannes observes from behind the corner.

Later the ship is on open sea and Stoppel is at the bridge while most passengers are on the deck. Alfred and Kwa are also there, sitting in folding chairs. Kwa comments on how nice the trip feels, while Alfred confesses that he's a little worried. Kwa asks what and Alfred explains that he doesn't understand how Wannes is onboard. Kwa says he thought they were friends but Alfred says that they're not and they just know each other, telling Kwa that Wannes is Dolf's friend. Kwa is shocked and Alfred confirms that he's talking about that specific Dolf who tried to become Waterland's dictator, and who's now hiding somewhere abroad. Kwa's not pleased to hear that Wannes is a dictator's friend and Alfred continues that Wannes finds Atrique wonderful. Kwa figures that it's why Wannes is going there but Alfred questions why this specific ship, and how did he even know the ship was going to Atrique. Kwa asks if the other passengers aren't going there and Alfred explains that they're all continuing somewhere else, shocking Kwa. Alfred tells him that he asked captain Stoppel to leave them in Cape Town's harbor and Stoppel hasn't told anybody else, and Alfred himself definitely hasn't. However, somebody revealed it to Wannes. Kwa is very worried.

As the sun sets Alfred, Kwa, and Blanche are in the ship's restaurant when a waiter shows Wannes to a table, namely the same table Alfred and the Wanas are sitting in. Wannes tells the waiter that it is not his table but when the waiter doesn't get the hint and tells him that the list says it's his table, Wannes insists that it's a mistake. The waiter tells him that mistakes aren't made there, Wannes yells at him and tells him that he will not sit next to black ducks. Alfred stands up and orders Wannes to apologise to the Wanas but Wannes asks why should he. Alfred angrily asks him if he doesn't understand how insulting he's being and Wannes proclaims to not understand at all. Alfred grabs Wannes by the the cravat and growls at him to apologise while Wannes swears he never will but Kwa interferes and pulls Alfred off before he can punch Wannes, leaving the goose wheezing and the whole restaurant staring at them. Alfred tells Kwa that Wannes is disgusting but Kwa tells him that if you take a fool seriously you become a fool, infuriating Wannes (who in the finnish dub responds by calling Kwa "n*gger duck"). Kwa tells Alfred to come back to the table but when they turn ariund Wannes attacks Kwa and grabs him by the shirt, while Blanche looks on in horror and Alfred tries to pry Wannes off and bites him in the wing when he hits him in the face. They're interrupted by captain Stoppel arriving and telling them to calm down, telling the waiter to find Wannes a new table. The waiter shows them an unoccupied table but Stoppel stops Wannes from sitting there, saying that the furniture is too worn for their guest, and when the waiter suggest the table by the window Stoppel says that he reserved it for himself. Stoppel instead makes Wannes sit at the table right in front of the bathroom room, so loud that everybody hears and starts staring at the table.

At night Kwa and Blanche are sleeping in their cabin, but Alfred has left his bed and is instead standing in the ship's rear, staring out into the sea and looking at the stars.

Back in Alfred's house in Waterland, Winnie is also stargazing in the field. Tom comes outside to ask what is she looking at, and she tells him she was asking for the stars to protect their mother and father. Tom asks if just them and Winnie says that of course Alfred too, causing Tom to giggle at her. Winnie chases him playfully and they run inside.

On the ship Stoppel is writing in his cabin when Wannes enters and asks if you can send telegrams from the ship and Stoppel says yes. Wannes explains that nobody acceptedhis message and they just sent him to ask Stoppel, who asks where he wants the message sent. Wannes tells him that it's going to Atrique and Stoppel says that it's possible, but asks to see the message. Wannes hands it over and Stoppel reads it, finding out the message is being sent to the Cape Town police to tell them the Wanas are on the ship. Wannes informs Stoppel that the Wana family left Atrique illegally and Stoppel admits that he wasn't aware of that, and Wannes claims that by doing that the Wanas committed treason. Stoppel tells him Kwa and Blanche don't look like criminals but Wannes maintains that anybody who flees their country illegally is a criminal, but Stoppel says that they disagree and refuses to have the telegram sent. Wannes angrily demands an explanation, and Stoppel tells him that Alfred is his friend and since the Wanas are Alfred's friends he cannot help Wannes if he plans to endanger them. Wannes gives up and leaves, saying that he doesn't need to send the telegram right now and he can just as well do it in the next harbor tomorrow.

Next morning the ship stops in a harbor and some cargo is moved while many passengers leave. Alfred and the Wanas are watching when Alfred notices that Wannes is also going. Blanche suggests that maybe he's not going to Atrique after all and Kwa's just saying how good it is if they don't need to see him anymore, when Stoppel walks over and tells them that Wannes will continue to Atrique, explaining that he's just going to send a telegram to Atrique's police. The Wanas are horrified and Alfred yells at Wannes to stop, but is unable to prevent him from leaving. Stoppel tells Alfred that even if Wannes wouldn't send the telegram from there, he would immediately call the police once they got to Cape Town. Alfred jumps on the railing and yells that they can't let the Wanas be arrested, and Stoppel suggests that they should leave the ship there and travel to Atrique by land but Alfred tells him he has another plan but it requires Stoppel's help. Stoppel promises that he will of course help in any way he can, and Alfred tells him that in this case the plan cannot fail.

The ship leaves harbor, and in the evening Wannes goes outside and sees Kwa and Blanche watching the sunset together. He approaches but Kwa notices and tries to ignore him, but Wannes comments that they will arrive to Atrique in the morning. He jumps to sit on the railing and mocks the Wanas for not responding and makes more racist comments. Kwa and Blanche walk away and Wannes laughs at them about the welcome they will get tomorrow.

After nightfall Cape Town's lights are visible from the distance, Stoppel and his sailors are preparing a lifeboat and Stoppel tells them to be quiet and keeps glancing around. Alfred sneaks out with Kwa and Blanche and tells him they're ready, while Kwa and Blanche thank Stoppel, promising to never forget how he helped them. However Stoppel tells them it's nothing and explains that they will reach the closest point in about four minutes which is when they will lower the lifeboat, and tells them to be ready. Kwa says goodbyes to Alfred and wishes they will meet again soon, while Blanche thanks Alfred for everything and Alfred tells her to take care of themselves. Blanche asks if they're ever going to meet again and Alfred assures her they will, and she asks him to promise to take care of their children if something happens to them. Blanche hugs Alfred tearfully and Alfred tells her not to worry, reassuring her that they'll meet again soon. Kwa tells Blanche to come to the lifeboat, telling her that they need to be lowered now. After she boards Stoppel tells the sailors to lower the boat and they watch the boat landing into the strong waves and Kwa rowing out into the night. Stoppel tells his men that once they get to the harbor they will notice that the lifeboat has gone missing, possibly stolen, but nobody will know what happened since nobody saw anything. The sailors readily agree with the story.

In the morning they arrive to Cape Town's harbor where the black ducks are doing all the work, and the police waits in hiding. Immediately after the stair is lowered they spring out and storm the ship in large numbers, terrifying the black dockworkers. Stoppel is shocked and tries to block them from the door and tells them that as the ship's captain he has right to get an explanation. Their leader -sergeant- tells him they're looking for mr. Wana and know he's onboard, and Stoppel claims that he indeed is. The sergeant explains Stoppel that Kwa and Blanche Wana are being accused of treason and demands Stoppel to hand them over, but Stoppel tells them that he hasn't seen the Wanas today and that they're propably still in their cabin. The sergeant orders the others to search the entire ship, every inch. Wannes rushes up and points the right hallway's door out to the police, who pass Alfred in the hall. Wannes notices Alfred who runs up to him and panicedly asks what the police is doing in there, and Wannes brags that they're looking for the Wanas in order to arrest them. Alfred tells them that it's strange and asks how did the police know the Wanas were on this ship, and Wannes dismissively suggest that maybe telepathy or something. Alfred comments on ''how much sense'' telepathy makes. Meanwhile the police have grouped up in the hall and one of them runs up to the sergeant to tell him that the Wanas aren't in the cabin, and he tells to search the entire ship. Alfred mocks Wannes and the pokice, suggesting that telepathy was involved.

This gets Alfred taken to the police station, where he's interrogated about where the Wanas went. However Alfred sticks to the story of the stolen lifeboat, insisting that he doesn't know but guessing that they left before the ship reached harbor. The sergeant comes into the room and informs Alfred that Cape Town's mayor has decided Alfred can stay in Atrique for only two days (and in the finnish dub stating that even that's only because he is white). Alfred informs the sergeant that two days are enough to observe Atrique's discriminatory practices and then leaves, not noticing that Wannes was in the police station's main hall.

Around Cape Town, we see a bus absolutely crammed with blacks ducks and some even hanging from the doorway while two white geese drive inna big and fancy car, and the drink can the other goose throws is swept up by a black duck who sweeps the street and two other black ducks carry garbage into the garbage truck. Blacks ducks do cheap roadwork while white goslings watch, a single goose woman sits on a bench with a sign banning black ducks from sitting while three black ducks with heavy luggage are standing at the bus stop right next to the bench, a large group of black ducks with buckets and containers crowding around a single water tap which gives water very slowly, an entire slum distict populated entirely by the black ducks, and a rich white goose lounging next to his swimming pool while a black duck serves him drinks.

Alfred sits alone in a park bench and looks like he's waiting for something, when a black duckling rushes under the bench and gives him a code phrase which Alfred answers correctly. The boy tells Alfred to follow him and runs, while Wannes stalks them from behind a tree.

Back in the city Alfred asks the boy if he's hungry and remarks that he hasn't eaten for a while, stopping to look through a bakery window. The boy tells him that they need to hurry because everybody's waiting, but Alfred tells him that they have time to eat. They go closer to the window and and the boy tells him that it's a white shop he's not allowed to enter, but Alfred keeps talking about the cakes and whispers him to look at the reflection in the glass, which reveals Wannes trying to hide behind a lamppost. Alfred explains that Wannes is working for the police and followed them the whole time, and the boy says that the resistance will be in big trouble if Wannes finds their hideout and Alfred says they need to get rid of him somehow. The qngry baker comes outside and yells at them for "disturbing" him and threatening to call the police. Alfred jumps on him and grabs his collar, dragging him into the ground while yelling that he'll "dusturb" him all right, and he'd tear the whole shop down if he could. The baker starts screaming and yelling at somebody to call the police, while Alfred and the boy flee with Wannes still on their tail. The boy takes Alfred to a shortcut through a slum marketplace, but Wannes is still following and alfred sees him. They run up the stairs and Wannes still follows them until Alfred dumps a can of red paint on him and then throws the empty bucket on his head. A crowd of black ducks watches as the police tries to check Wannes' paint-covered passport and refuses to believe Wannes' identity because he isn't red in the passport photo.

Alfred and the boy enter an old black duck's store and the boy whispers to him, and the old man lets him and Alfred into the back where the boy knocks on the door and Alfred thanks him. They're led into a large room filled with black ducks, where Kwa Wana is standing on a barrel and holding a speech. He tells the audience that he wants to return to his old comrades and they must keep fighting to eliminate these terrible injustices, and says he couldn't stop thinking about it while hiding in a distant country. He tells them how Alfred helped him, and asks them to welcome him. Blanche comes over to tell Alfred how nice it is to have him there, and Kwa invites Alfred to stand on the barrel and give them a few words, but Alfred hesitates and Kwa tells him everybody wants himmto say something and the other ducks clap. Alfred climbs up next to Kwa and talks about how he's witnessed Atrique's discrimination and segregation despite his short stay and he'll never forget the things he's seen, and promises that once he gets back to Waterland he'll be spreading information to as many people as he can and he will do whatever is necessary and whatever is possible to help them, and assures them that they will win somehow.

The last few words are a voiceover when Alfred's standing at Stoppel's ship's rear and staring back at Atrique while the ship dissappears into the distance.

They run up the stairs and Wannes still
follows them until Alfred dumps a can of red paint on him and then throws the empty bucket on his head.

They're led into a large room filled
with black ducks, where Kwa Wana is standing on a barrel and holding a speech. He tells the audience that he wants intention of exposing Kwah's resistance movement to return to his old comrades and they must keep fighting to eliminate these terrible injustices, and says he couldn't stop thinking about it while hiding in a distant country.
