Alfred's pulling weird faces on the mirror, and spooks ssthe visiting Henk when answering to the door. Alfred is just going outside, and when Henks ask him to go see the traveling circus with him, Alfred declares telling Henk that he's going to ''join it'' as a clown, despite Henk's discouragement. Alfred runs off to the circus in excitement, bouncing on the road and stopping to show off his acrobathy to a random woman he passes.

In the circus camp, Alfred wanders around the wagon area looking for the ringmaster, and watches a strongman to lift weights. Alfred's questions and comments distrupt the strongman's focus, causing him to drop the weight first on the ground and then on himself. The strongman is angry and Alfred apologises in fear. He watches the strongman lift the weights all the way up, and they're so heavy that the guy sinks deep into the ground. Alfred runs away into the show tent, where he watches the acrobats training, and quickly develops a crush on the swan woman named Gersomina, who approaches him. When he tells her he's looking for work, he learns that the circus already has a clown. The ringmaster, Valentino, shows up and orders Gersomina back to work. Alfred introduces himself to Valentino and tells him he read their ad and wants to work as a clown.

Valentino introduces Alfred to their clown, Colombo, who's seriously ill and bedridden. Colombo is sceptical of Alfred's supposed talents and somewhat hostile, but agrees to teach Alfred. He explains the evening's program. Theor show is about a clown and his incompetent student. Alfred is offended and protests, but Colombo explains that ''Alfred'' is playing the clown and ''he'''s playing the student. When Colombo is demonstrating the show's ending, he suddendly loses consciousness. Alfred's yelling alerts the human tamer Horst, who helps Alfred carry Colombo back into his wagon while Colombo insists that he's fine. They tell Valentino, who worries that the circus won't work without a clown. Hosts suggests that Alfred could substitute, but Valentino isn't convinced because of Alfred's lack of experience. He still allows it because there aren't any other options. Alfred then accompanies Horst to check on the circus' wild human Leo, and is terrified by his roars. Horst whips Leo when he growls at him.

Henk's walking on a road when he meets Ollie who's looking for Alfred, and tells him he's going to join a circus and travel around the country. Ollie can't believe Alfred actually wants to be a clown.

Alfred has just gotten dressed in Colombo's wagon, and Colombo warns him that amusing the audience is not as easy as Alfred thinks and warns him of stage fright, but Alfred is sure that he'll be okay.

At the same time, Horst is training Leo, making him jump through a burning ring, climb on a chair pyramid, and do other tricks. Alfred finds Gersomina fawning over Horst and becomes jealous. There's one hour until the show and he asks if Alfred can do the clown job, and he says yes. However, Alfred's looking to impress Gersomina and asks to be a human tamer, but Valentino isn't having any of it and just tells Alfred to be a clown.

When the tent has opened and Alfred's waiting for his turn, he spots Henk, Ollie, and Snel in the audience and starts getting the stage fright Colombo warned him about. He pretends that everything is okay in front of Gersomina, but once she leaves he starts going into an all-out panic. Other performances are well-received, but when it's Alfred's turn, he panics and wants out. However, Valentino doesn't let him chicken out on such short notice and forces him into the arena, and the audience initially laughs at his attempts to flee the spotlight.

Meanwhile, Leo is trying to escape and succeeds in breaking his cage. When Horst and Gersomina are waiting for their turn together, Leo sneaks up on them and throws Horst to the other side of the area, causing him to flee and Gersomina to faint. Leo picks her up.

When Alfred's gotten over his blind panic and actually performing, nobody's laughing anymore, and some even start booing at him. Leo then bursts to the ring still carrying Gersomina, making the other performers flee in terror. Alfred doesn't notice Leo standing behind and imitating him, and is just happy that the audience laughs. Valentino stops Horst's helpers from going in with a net. Alfred spins around, colliding with Leo, noticing the unconscious Gersomina, and realizing the situation. Leo is still imitating him, so Alfred tricks him into handing Gersomina to him, snatching her and running away. Gersomina is out of immediate danger, but the angry human catches Alfred and growls at him. Alfred tries tickling Leo, who starts tickling back. Valentino lets Horst's helpers intervene and net the human, which ends Alfred's performance. After carrying Gersomina out of the ring, Alfred faints.

After the shows are over and Alfred has recovered, he's going home. Valentino tries to convince him to stay, but Alfred politely refuses, saying that Colombo is a good clown and wishing him well. Alfred then says goodbye to Valentino and walks into the night.

!! Tropes:
* CircusEpisode
* BodyHorror: The ways Alfred contorts his face and Columbo contorts his whole body can easily be seen as this.
* FillerEpisode: Almost nobody else besides Alfred is in the episode, nothing really important happens, and none of the new characters are ever seen again. It also [[BreatherEpisode comes between two two-parters]].
* ExtremelyShortTimeSpan: The episode's events take place over a few hours, most likely not even one full day.
* FreezeFrameBonus: The brown bird woman Alfred shows off to on the road resembles Dolf's mother, just in different clothes and grayed.
* NonMammalMammaries: Said bird woman has a cleavage, strangely on the underside.
* DubNameChange:
** The swan's name is Jersomina in the finnish dub.
** Horst's name is Orhi in the finnish dub. [[MeaningfulName It retains it's meaning: "horse"]]. In the english dub, Horst's name is Simon.
* UnfortunateImplications: The animal-like circus human Horst trains (similiarly to a lion tamer) is dark-skinned.
* TrrrillingRs: The ringleader speaks like this, even when not in the ring.
* FurryConfusion: The monkeys use non-sapient horses as a part of their act, but there's also an anthropomorphised horse in the circus, Horst the human tamer.
