* TheAgeless:
AmbiguouslyHuman: The staff all appear human enough for the guests to believe they are-- most of the time, at least. Invariably, though, they display traits that none of the guests are shown to have:
** All of them are capable of ''rotting while still "alive"'' and surviving in the "void" that exists between instances of the Hotel.
** The Owner is shown to be able to change his size at will, as well as his arrival being accompanied by the sound of flapping wings.
** The Lobby Boy is capable of shaping the Hotel itself, using this power to make the rooms the guests die their fantastical deaths in.
** The Manager doesn't overtly display any similar powers, but her eyes are noted as being silver, unlike the mundane eye colors of the guests. She also appears to have some form of inhuman strength, being able to bend and dent ''solid metal'' with her bare hands.
* BodyHorror:
AndIMustScream: The fates of Ted Barrow (1.1) and Alex Potenski (4.16); being turned into a tree and a network of fungi, respectively.
* CastOfPersonifications:
AssholeVictim: While the Hotel doesn't discriminate when it comes to its victims, Season 1's Jacob Withers definitely proves himself to be one of these when he constantly calls the front desk to complain about amenities that he hasn't even touched.
* EldritchLocation:
BodyHorror: A staple of the show's horror is the bodies of both the staff and the guests being warped and twisted in grotesque fashions at the whims of the Hotel.
* CallBack: The Bee and Pollen Ballroom from the Season 4 New Year's Eve special reappears in [[spoiler: the Season 5 finale as one of the ballrooms Judy Blashy is asked to pick from for her ''own'' New Year's Eve party.]]
* CosmicHorrorStory: The show as a whole carries many hallmarks of the genre, taking place in [[spoiler: [[GeniusLoci a hotel that doubles as ''the entire observable universe'']] whose opinions on humanity boil down to "they're funny and they look pretty when they die."]]
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Several of the guests' showcased deaths qualify; such as having all of the moisture sucked out of their body,
* DeathByIrony: While some of the guests' deaths are unrelated to their own flaws, guests such as Season 4's Perry Sherwin[[note]]A man who relied on others' presence to define himself, who died by becoming indistinguishable from the bed in his room[[/note]] meet very appropriate fates.
* DeathIsCheap: While the staff die in every episode from Season 3 onward, they always "respawn" by the next episode. Justified in that there are, effectively, infinite copies of them.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: Season 1 is ''rife'' with this, primarily in the Owner's episodes, where he muses on the Hotel's hiring process [[spoiler: (The staff are later revealed to be creations of the Hotel Herself)]] and encounters what is implied to be another version of himself out to kill him. [[spoiler: This is never brought up again.]]
* EldritchLocation: Every room in every instance of the Hotel exists simultaneously. Even individual instances of the Hotel aren't bound by the laws of reality, often spiraling into infinity or repeating their own internal layouts. In addition, no matter whether or not a manifestation of the Hotel even has more than one floor, the Owner's office is ''always'' on the "third floor."
* EternalEmployee: The staff exist solely to fulfill their roles in the Hotel. When they're not doing their jobs, they simply stop existing.
* ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin: The show is about a hotel ''called,'' proper noun, "the Hotel;" guests check in and die horrific deaths.
* HisNameReallyIsBarkeep: The names of the staff are ''actually'' "the Owner," "the Manager," and "the Lobby Boy." It's implied in [[BonusEpisode "The Library"]] that the Manager has some hangups about this.
-> '''The Manager:''' ''YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE A NAME, YOU ROTTEN PUPPET!''
* InterfaceSpoiler: [[spoiler: The transcript for 4.12 has the guests guest's name be colored in purple, a color otherwise only used for The Hotel.]]
* LargeHam: The Owner is quite prone to ChewingTheScenery, especially from Season 3 onwards, where he becomes a more active member of the staff and has more opportunity to show off his Hamminess.
->'''The Owner:''' [[spoiler: ''YOU CANNOT KILL ME IN A WAY THAT MATTERS, LOBBY BOY!'']]
* MadnessMantra: In "The Lobby Boy Dies" (3.5), the Lobby Boy slips into one of these.
-> '''The Lobby Boy:'''' ''I drop the key. I keep moving down the hall. I don't look at the doors. I don't look at the candles. I don't look at the key in my hand. I drop the key again.''
* NothingIsScarier: Season 1 guest Ashley Brushes' death is never described to the listener.
* NothingIsTheSameAnymore: Almost every season ends with a dramatic shift in the series' status quo.
* OneSteveLimit: Averted with Mary Molly and Mary Mallore, Mallorie, both in Season 1.
* RedeemingReplacement:TheSwarm: Season 4 guest Geoff Cooper's death was at the hands of hordes of beetles. [[spoiler: CanonImmigrant The Vermin also falls under this trope.]]
* WalkingSpoiler:
** [[spoiler: The Hotel Herself]] isn't established as an active character until Season 2, and [[spoiler: ''Madam'' Hotel[[note]]The same character, but compressed into a human body.[[/note]]]] doesn't appear until midway through Season 4.
** [[spoiler: the New Crew,]] introduced in Season 5.

''The Hotel'' is a {{horror}} podcast written and performed by Jonathan Sims (of Music/TheMechanisms fame) with a supporting cast and occasional guests. It began in 2016, and concluded in 2021.

[[TheDanza Jonathan Sims]] is the newly appointed archivist of the Magnus Institute, an academic organisation in London dedicated to research into the paranormal. Unfortunately, his predecessor Gertrude Robinson left the archive in a complete mess. Countless statements from people who have come to the Institute over the years to report alleged supernatural experiences lie in hopeless disorder. It’s up to Jon to record them properly, and follow up on any interesting ones, with the help of his assistants, Tim, Sasha, and Martin. As he works through the statements, Jon discovers that some of them suggest disturbing connections with each other – and with the Institute itself.

At first, most episodes consist of Jon reading and recording a statement from the archive, or occasionally recording someone else giving a new statement; after each statement, Jon adds his own commentary, noting any further investigation his assistants have been able to do, how much of the statement he believes, and any other implications it may have. Early episodes appear self-contained, but [[MythArc intricate story arcs]] and a large cast of regular supporting characters develop as the series continues.
