gonna need to do a few passes for the descriptions - aside from making the writers look like weenies, being overwrought also misleads the reader and defeats the purpose, especially if actually creepy details are overlooked in the process

* An archetype known as [[http://yugipedia.com/wiki/Gimmick_Puppet "Gimmick Puppets"]] is generally accepted as the archetype with the creepiest art. All of the monsters within the archetype are evil looking-puppets, like [[http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130712133155/yugioh/images/8/87/GimmickPuppetNightmare-NUMH-EN-SR-1E.png "Gimmick Puppet Nightmare."]] Literally, nightmare fuel.
** One specific card, [[http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20131011151418/yugioh/images/b/b0/GimmickPuppetDrearyDoll-PP15-JP-ScR.png "Gimmick Puppet Dreary Doll,"]] had to be completely redesigned in order to be exported from Japan to the rest of the world. The original artwork is a childlike puppet that is covered in bloody bandages while sitting in a coffin. The new version it still unsettling, but it makes it look more [[http://images.wikia.com/yugioh/images/e/e1/GimmickPuppetDrearyDoll-PP08-KR-UR-1E.png like a toy]] instead of a dead child.
** [[https://yugipedia.com/wiki/Gimmick_Puppet_Terror_Baby Gimmick Puppet Terror Baby]] is even worse, instead of looking like a dead child it looks like some kind of possessed infant in a demonic stroller. It also has the ability to revive one of its fellow Gimmick Puppets and make it so the opponent can't stop their effects for a turn, which can be ''devastating'' in the right circumstances.
** Another "Gimmick Puppet" monster, [[http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20131224181530/yugioh/images/3/36/GimmickPuppetShadowFeeler-PP16-JP-C.png "Gimmick Puppet Shadow Feeler,"]] can be visually linked with the human centipede from the film ''Film/TheHumanCentipede: First Sequence''.
** If you think the basic CannonFodder Gimmick Puppets are bad wait until you see a few of their [[https://yugipedia.com/wiki/Number_15:_Gimmick_Puppet_Giant_Grinder boss]] [[https://yugipedia.com/wiki/Number_40:_Gimmick_Puppet_of_Strings monsters]] hit the field. The only thing more horrible than their gruesome looks are the way that they [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbvs2v-IXrw&ab_channel=darkchrono1320 attack their foes.]] Naturally, this was one of the many things the english version of the game toned down as can be seen with the Gimmick Puppet Dreary Doll edit above.

rewriting more egregious overselling - it's literally a recolor, come off it

* The only reason people still remember the two Twin Long Rods monsters are their creepy designs. [[https://yugipedia.com/wiki/Twin_Long_Rods_2 Twin Long Rods #2]] is a serpent-like... ''thing'' with bulging eyes from the sides, exaggerated lips, an open mouth to fully display its teeth, and two tentacle-like tails that it can apparently use as weapons. However, #2 pales in comparison to the [[NoExportForYou OCG-exclusive]] [[https://yugipedia.com/wiki/Twin_Long_Rods_1 Twin Long Rods #1]], one of the most hideous-looking monsters ever printed. It reaches GagLips territory, has a SlasherSmile expression (#2's expression is more angry than sadistic), and the lower half of its body [[UnfortunateCharacterDesign closely resembles a giant butt]]. No wonder it has never been internationally released!

** Another example, although much less scary than the above, of censorship making things worse is the monster [[http://yugipedia.com/wiki/Mystic_Tomato Mystic Tomato]]. The original artwork makes it look like a Jack-O-Lantern, but in the TCG, its a tomato with a bit-too-realistic monster face.

* There is the implication in the story behind the cards that [[http://yugipedia.com/wiki/Invader_of_Darkness Invader of Darkness]] is some sort of EvilOverlord who is something like [[Franchise/StarWars Darth Vader]]. And that, going by the number of cards searching for him, he probably did something unspeakably horrific. And there's how he probably did in Gagagigo, leaving the poor guy for Kozaki to repair, who probably has a EvilPlan of his own going... yeah, Invader is the BigBad.
