The Lady of the Lake has an EarlyBirdCameo in ''Literature/LancelotTheKnightOfTheCart'' by Creator/ChretienDeTroyes. It's mentioned in passing that Lancelot has a ring that was given to him by a lady -- "a fairy, who had given it to him, and who had cared for him in his infancy." That single line is it; its not extrapolated upon. This implies that being raised by her was already part of the oral Lancelot lore of the period. Since the original audience was already familiar with his backstory, they didn't need it re-hashed.
