In 2016, they released what many consider to be their magnum opus: Nonagon Infinity. It was designed to be an infinitely looping album, with it containing nine songs that all segue into each other, including the [[Main/Bookends beginning and ending tracks]], hence the title "Nonagon Infinity". And to add to the success of the album, they decided to release five new albums in 2017, the first being Flying Microtonal Banana in January, where they went fully experimental and started using microtones (which are the notes that are in between semitones (e.g. E and F)).

They began making their first EPs in 2011. One, called Anglesea, was a four track EP released on CD, and is [[KeepCirculatingTheTapes no longer able to be purchased by legitimate means.]] The second Willoughby's Beach EP, was what got them noticed in Australia, and got them to play at the Meredith Music Festival in December of that year. Around a year later, they would record their first album, 12 Bar Bruise, all by themselves. It was inspired by SurfRock and GarageRock, with King Gizzard giving those sounds a psychedelic flair.

They were originally going to be called "Gizzard Gizzard", which was thought up by lead vocalist Stu Mackenzie, but another member of the band wanted the band to be named "Lizard King", as a tribute to [[Music/TheDoors Jim Morrison of The Doors]]. The eventually decided to compromise and name the band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.
