* NationalStereotypes: "Stranger In Moscow" takes place in Moscow and mentions the Kremlin. However it also describes a lot of things that are more reminscent of the USSR (like Stalin's tomb and the KGB), than Russia after the fall of the Iron Curtain. And this especially strange since this song was written in 1995, a mere four years after the collapse of Soviet Union.

*SelfPlagiarism: To a degree. in 1993, Michael and his sound team were tapped to help compose the music for SonicTheHedgehog3. However, they were abruptly dropped from the project for unclear reasons (their removal happened to coincide with the child molestation accusations, though others who also worked on the game said Michael didn't like the sound quality of the music and voluntarily quit), though their music was kept in the game. Not wanting the music to go to total waste, Michael took the ending theme he composed for the game, slowed it down, and turned it into "Stranger in Moscow". It would be ''ten years'' before Sonic fans started putting two and two together.

'''''[=HIStory=]: Past, Present, And Future, Book I''''' is the ninth studio album by Music/MichaelJackson, released in 1995. The first CD is basically a [[GreatestHits compilation]] of Michael's greatest solo hits. The second is all new material. Despite some worldwide Top 10 hits, like "Scream", "They Don't Care About Us", "Earth Song", "You're Not Alone", "History" and "Stranger In Moscow", with equally impressive and ambitious music videos [[note]] "Scream" was- and still is- even the most expensive music video of all time, with a budget of 7 million dollars! [[/note]] ''[=HIStory=]'' wasn't such an international best-seller as Jackson's previous records. Much had to do with the 1993 allegations that Jackson supposedly had sexually abused a young boy. Despite the absence of actual proof or even a trial the scandal severely harmed his public image for years to come, especially after he just bought the boy and his father off. His widely publicized 1994 marriage to Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Music/ElvisPresley, only made more people wonder whether it was genuine love or just a ploy to distract attention away from the scandal. Around the same time stress had also taken a toll on Jackson, who became addicted to painkillers, an anxiety reflected in many of the songs on the album.

All these factors caused a public backlash against the former "King of Pop". Sales and reviews of ''[=HIStory=]: Past, Present, And Future, Book I'' were greatly [[OvershadowedByControversy overshadowed by the controversy about Jackson's private life]] and failed to notice the merits of the music itself. * GreenAesop: "Earth Song", an environmental message by Michael that we should take care of Earth. The music video showed how Jackson and various people on Earth all bring nature's forces together to make an end to killing of animals, chopping away the rainforest, warfare and polluting the planet. They collectively set back time to make the planet green again. Unfortunately, to some viewers, this lead to the wrong impression that Jackson saw himself as some sort of MessianicArchetype who could change the world by himself. As Jackson himself tried to defend himself: it's not him alone who does the changing in the music video, but him and other people across the planet.

--> ''Or see it on the TV screen''
--> ''Don't make it factual, actual''
--> ''They say he's homosexual''
* MoneySong: "Money"."Money", where Jackson criticizes someone for doing "everything for money".
* NostalgiaFilter: "Childhood", a personal song where Jackson looks back at his childhood whom he never was allowed to have due to him touring all the time as a child star.
--> ''Have you seen my childhood?''
--> ''I'm searching for the world that I come from''
--> ''Cause I've been looking around''
--> ''In the lost and found of my heart''
* OneWomanSong: "Little Susie".
* OneWordTitle: "Money", "Scream", "Childhood", "History", "Smile".

--> ''If you just smile''
* ThePowerOfLove: "You're Not Alone".
* PrecisionFStrike: "Stop "Scream"
--> ''Stop
fucking with me" me''
* ProperlyParanoid: A huge theme, even more than Jackson's previous albums. In "Stranger In Moscow" Michael talks about "the KGB stalking me", In "2Bad", "Tabloid Junkie" and "D.S." he makes mention of the CIA and tabloids houding him.
* PoliceBrutality: "They Don't Care About Us"
--> ''I'm the victim of police brutality''
* ProtestSong: "They Don't Care About Us", against injustice.
* PunBasedTitle: "HIStory" is a pun
on "Scream"."history" and "his story". This is especially made clear in the music video, where people are dancing in a club with various TV screens show clips from Michael's music videos.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: "2 Bad"
--> ''You ain't done enough for me''
--> ''You ain't done enough for me''

* RuleOfThree: "You're Not Alone"
--> ''Whisper three words and I'll come runnin' ''
--> ''And girl, you know that I'll be there, I'll be there''
* ShoutOut:
** In the music video of "Scream" Michael and Janet are seen looking at famous art objects, including Creator/ReneMagritte's painting "Son Of Man" and a self portrait of Creator/AndyWarhol. Clips from ''Anime/{{Akira}}'' and ''Anime/{{Zillion}}'' can also be seen.

--> ''I'm really undefeated when MJ is on my team, theme''
--> ''(...) Mike's bad, I'm bad, who are you?''
* SlowMotion: The music video of "Stranger In Moscow" is shot in slow-motion.

* SoundEffectBleep: In later releases, "jew me" and "kike me" on "They Don't Care About Us" were censored out with record scratches.
* TakeThat: The song "D.S.". The lyrics say that someone named "Dom Sheldon" is a cold man, but if you listen to the song, he's clearly saying "Tom Sneddon", the Santa Barbara DA who went after him for child molestation back in the '90s and again in 2005 — in fact, some people believed that Sneddon had a vendetta against Jackson because of this song, and it was at least part of the reason he took him to trial.
