Greif are a sludge/ doom metal band formed in 1991 in Boston by Terry Sevastano and Pete Donovan.
Besides being the beginnings of the east coast side of Sludge and doom metal Greif were cheifly inspired by St Vitus Black sabbath but much slower and darker (somehow).
As a result they are easily one of the heaviest and sludgiest of all of the sludge metal groups.
Sadly the band called it quits in 1999: "come to greif" being their landmark work.
Tropes that apply to Greif:
** Sludge metal: Sludge/ doom actually: an early example if not quite Codifiers and they may be slower than most bands in either genre.
** Darker and edgier: of EYEHATEGOD Melvins Acid bath and Crowbar of all bands: Greif are slower and much angrier than the original Sludge groups and have none of the grooves or southern rock hints that these bands have instead opting for a more hardcore aesthetic and upfront attitude.
** Mohs Scale of Rock and metal hardness: NEVER slips below a slow agonizing 10, not even for a second... well maybe 5 seconds a random guitar solo here and there but its basically non stop thunderous depressing grinding riffs.
** Epic rocking: Few songs are less than 6 minutes and many over 8 minutes long : epic is a bit of an advised word though... more like "relentless dirge"
