This is before ''anything'' was revealed about the protagonists aside from their appearance.

This fandom was likely spurred on by official concept art portraying him with an eyepatch, peg-leg, cape, and laser sword. Besides, Dane's too manly to wear a helmet or filtration system while landing on the Space Pirate Homeworld to order Samus around. Note that no pirates have the balls to even try to snipe him during the briefing. That, and he does so on a planet ravaged by rain so acidic that even Samus has to use a special widget to survive.
