The tunnel is opened in the end, but Yusuke, himself revealed to be the descendant of a powerful demon, defeats Sensui afterwards.

With much reluctance, Yusuke takes on the job, and finds himself facing all manner of supernatural baddies. Lucky for him, he has the help of Botan as a liaison and tactical support. Early on in his career they send him to the OldMaster Genkai, a short, crotchety old woman who nevertheless is a highly capable spiritual guru and martial artist.

* AdaptationDistillation: The anime cuts out ''a lot'' from the manga to make for tighter pacing.

to:

* AdaptationDistillation: The anime cuts out ''a lot'' a lot of the adventures Yusuke had while dead-- the only ones left are the ones that set up Keiko's and Kuwabara's characters. This streamlining continues throughout Kurama's introduction,[[note]]cutting out the flashback that explains the exact moment that caused his change and his rationalization of how his mother will actually be better off with him dead, now that she's seeing someone[[/note]], but the anime also starts making small changes that give Koenma and Botan more to do and more dialogue in general. Koenma gains his video screen that lets him watch everything the heroes do and his sidekick Jorge Saotome, who needs things explained to him. Cutting actual scenes or storylines mostly stops by the time we get to Genkai, and entirely once we get to Yukina, but starting with the Yukina rescue and going into the Dark Tournament, the anime starts padding the episodes out with more character moments, like having Botan go with Kuwabara and Yusuke to Tarukane's mansion, extending the fights with the demon triad, and more Koenma-and-Jorge slapstick, or slightly extending jokes and sight gags, like Botan imagining Hiei's reaction to her telling Yukina who he is. Keiko and Shizuru start to get more dialogue and more introspection, both to extend the length of the tournament episodes (the most popular arc of the manga) and to cover for Atsuko being left out of the anime from this point on. Small changes keep happening, like having Keiko recoil and slap a demon in fright instead of deliberately punching him (and muttering to herself afterward about how she's losing her touch) or rearranging dialogue so that Hiei actually has lines, and short scenes of introspection get progressively longer until we hit the Sensui arc and the Three Kings. Once the Demon World Tournament starts, however, all bets are off. The manga only shows a little of the prelims and the beginning of Yusuke's fight with Yomi, before cutting back to make for tighter pacing.the human world, summarizing the tournament, and starting a long wrap-up of final character notes and last hurrahs, ending with the characters relaxing after Genkai's funeral. The anime, again because the Dark Tournament was so popular, instead extends the tournament, fleshing out Yusuke's and Yomi's fight, but also ones that were only mentioned, like Kurama vs Shigure and Hiei vs Mukuro, and condensing all of the character notes and last hurrahs into the 112th episode... and letting Genkai live. So it's kind of fascinating, taken as a whole. The first part is full of cuts to get to the fighting faster, while the last part is full of padding to keep the fighting going until the end.
