Anime's answer to ''Series/{{COPS}}'' (and to a lesser extent, [[WesternAnimation/{{COPS}} the other version of COPS]]).

Originally known as ''Taiho Shichauzo''; it started as a manga by Creator/KosukeFujishima, then became an {{OVA}}, and now has been through three TV {{anime}} series (With the first having 52 episodes, the second having 26, and the third having 24 respectively), an [[Anime/YoureUnderArrestTheMovie animated movie]] and a LiveActionAdaptation with a [[VideoGame/YoureUnderArrest Playstation game]], followed by another [[Anime/YoureUnderArrestNoMercy another OVA set in Los Angeles]] and [[Anime/YoureUnderArrestMiniSpecials another OVA spinoffs centering on the officers in Bokuto in a slice of life-type setting in wacky situations]].

* AlmightyJanitor: It might not be obvious at first, but this is essentially what Miyuki and Natsumi are. Despite being mere traffic cops, they've received more specialist training and are more skilled than most other cops shown in the show. For example, by ''Full Throttle'', Natsumi has both been a former member of the Tokyo MPD's Special Assault Team as well as the JGSDF Rangers.

* BadSanta: Episode 11 of the first season had a crook who pretended to be Santa break into people's houses. Natsumi and Miyuki find the children distraught over what happened, cuing one of their many [[SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments Crowning Moments Of Heartwarming]].

* BigDamnHeroes: While Miyuki and Natsumi have several, one of the ones that ranks among a SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome goes to Detective Tokuno when he saves Miyuki and Ken from a knife-wielding maniac.

* GoodBadTranslation: A minor example in the Dark Horse release of the manga with Miyuki referring to herself in third person when talking to Natsumi in one chapter.

* AnimationBump: All over the series, with the [=OVAs=] having the best overall animation, episodes 2 and 4 especially.

* VocalEvolution: Well.... it's less this and more of age ''really'' affecting Issei Masamune's voice cuz by ''Full Throttle'', the Chief sounds noticeably older and more restrained compared to how he did in earlier seasons due to said aging and what's more jarring about this? ''Everyone else'' sounds exactly the same as they always have, which makes Masamune's aged voice much more noticeable.

** This, by the way, is '''''before''''' getting into how Miyuki rigged her patrol car to be remotely operated by her in case of it being stolen in the manga. This shows up again in season 1 during episode 8 in an attempt to help Yoriko beet Chie in a competition.

* EverythingIsBetterWithPlushies: The OVA opening and ending animations feature ragdoll versions of the main cast at a few points sitting in the back of the Today.

* [[VideoGameSuperMarioBros A Goomba]] can be seen in a claw machine at one point sure episode 9 of season 1.

* AdaptationDistillation: The LiveActionAdaptation is almost completely unrecognizable. And aside from the few chapters they ''did'' adapt [[note]] which were mostly in Specials [[/note]], the anime is largely independent of the manga and in many ways bears little resemblance to its manga counterpart.

* OffModel: The first season kept on switching from excellent animation to OffModel. It eventually decided to go with a middle animation; not as high-quality as the original episodes but not as mediocre as the others. The other seasons have better quality. On occasion, they'd [[InconsistentColoring slip up eye colors]] in the first season. Natsumi would be given brown instead of purple eyes, and Miyuki would be given purple instead of blue. Though to be blunt, this was animated by Creator/StudioDEEN, the queen of this trope.

* [[{{Transgender}} Transgender]]: While never outright confirmed, Aoi is heavily implied to be one. It's one of the most realistic portrayals of a transgender individual in anime too, not to mention that she's treated quite respectfully by her coworkers after her introduction. She is thought of as being female almost all of the time, and transgender tropes have appeared relating to her. Episode 6 all but goes out and says "transsexual"; A character says that her "natural flow" leads toward her being a woman, and goes on to say that he doesn't care if she's male or female (signifying she's a girl instead of a crossdresser). The original manga implies she had interests in crossdressing and feminine thoughts ''before'' becoming a police officer too.

** Aoi fits in as well, being very ladylike and gentle but also plucky as well. The most noticeable differences are: her hair is lighter than the standard, and she's a {{trans|sexual}} woman rather than a cis woman.

* ImprobablyFemaleCast: Of the whole main cast there's only three males -- the Chief, Nakajima and Toukairin, and for Toukairin it's debatable: despite being [[spoiler: Natsumi's LoveInterest and the]] lead whenever he appears, he is a [[GuestStarPartyMember guest character]] and does so in barely a quarter of all episodes. Aoi is physically male too, but for all narrative intents and purposes she is a woman - starting with referring to her with feminine pronouns, and the implication of her being {{transsexual}} rather than a WholesomeCrossdresser. All other males in the show are clearly in supporting roles.

* WholesomeCrossdresser: Subverted. Despite her initial introduction as a vice cop "gone native" in pursuit of sex criminals, Aoi may be transsexual rather than transvestite. She does state on several occasions that her heart is that of a woman despite her male body, she's generally referred to as female rather than a crossdressing male, and she's in an online relationship with a man in the second season.

** Otiginaly, the OVA's stayed pretty close to Fujishima's designs, but then there's a noticeable change (de-evolution) from the [=OVAs=] to season 1. But as the seasons progressed, the characters began to look more in line Atsuko Nakajima's other character designs, ''especially'' in the movie and seasons 2 & 3. The most noticeable being the eyes which have gotten more [[WhatBeautifulEyes big, colorful and bright]].
** Aoi gets a [[http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/1174/aoik.png noticeable change]] in appearance over the pace of the series.

* AscendedExtra: Saori Saga in the anime. In the first season, she only appeared on a couple of episodes as nothing more than a RecurringExtra. In the second season, she [[spoiler: becomes a police officer with about the same screen time as Yoriko and Aoi]], appearing on almost every episode. Subverted in ''Full Throttle'' where she was [[spoiler:[[PutOnABus transferred to another precinct]]]]. Later in the season, [[spoiler: TheBusCameBack]] for nothing less than a [[spoiler:BeachEpisode]]. For comparison, she's only a minor character at best in the manga

* AttractiveBentGender: Aoi Futaba. The entire department, male and female alike, falls all over '''him''' in Episode 5.

* BaitAndSwitchLesbians: The series pulls a (probably) unintentional version of this.

* BrandX: Averted in that their cruiser is not only obviously a Honda Today, but even has the stock Honda "H" on the hood that's normally replaced with an Imperial chrysanthemum badge on Japanese police cars (including the others in the series).

* CanonForeigner: There are several anime-only characters, including Shouji Toukairin, Kaoruko Kinoshita and the preschool kids.
** And as for the live action version, the cast is mostly replaced by 'em, the only characters from the source material that appear are Natsumi, Miyuki, Yoriko, Saori and Nakajima.

* DarkerAndEdgier: TheMovie is pretty much this comparison to the whole series, but also the anime which is a bit more down to earth compared to the original manga which leans more towards the DenserAndWackier side.

* DenserAndWackier: The manga was basically fast paced short comedy vingettes focused mostly on Natsumi and Miyuki's hijinks, the anime was kinda the opposite.

* TheEighties: In the manga, the clothing started as this but gradually switched over to early 90's clothes by the end. The anime of course, updated the series to be set in the mid 90's to late 2000's (depending on the season).

** The manga of course has some in more so than the anime, but nothing too extreme, in fact in some instances Natsumi & Miyuki take advantage of it.

* {{Flanderization}}: As the anime went on, the characters became this, for starters, by ''Full Throttle'', Natsumi's basically regressed into being the DumbMuscle.

* GratuitousEnglish: Natsumi likes spouting out small English phrases like "OK". Also happens in the No Mercy [=OVA=].

* MayDecemberRomance: Daimaru and his second wife Sena, who's younger than Daimaru's ''son'' Ken. Yoriko later meets Prince Saki Abdusha, who falls for her despite him being a teenager and Yoriko being in her early to mid twenties.

* MistakenForGay: The [=LAPD=] officers in the No Mercy [=OVA=] assume that the Chief and [[spoiler:Shou, the undercover detective]] are thought to be gay when they were seen heading to a motel. Turns out that it was not the case.

* ShoutOut: When one of the policewoman had a piece of underwear stolen from her apartment, another one suggested the thief must be: a) [[Franchise/{{Godzilla}} an incredibly tall monster]]; b) some sort of evil Franchise/SpiderMan; or c) [[Franchise/{{Superman}} someone who can leap tall buildings at a single bound]]. Just in case someone claims suggestion a might have been about any other tall monster, there was a silhouette.

* TransTribulations: Aoi has one episode where she falls for a man however doesn't know how to tell him that she's a trans woman. It ultimately doesn't work out between them. In another episode, her former boss tries to coax her to act manly, however it bombs in his face as every attempt such accentuates how feminine she is.
