** Shocking Jae-Ha even more is the fact that this [[JustForPun backstory]] isn’t even something Kija’s gloomy or concerned about, as Kija explains, to him, [[PhysicalScarsPsychologicalScars the scar is a mark]] of [[spoiler:his father’s desire to serve Hiryuu and the only time his father touched him]]. In a flashback, Kija even says that he would be fine with the scar staying with him his whole life.

* GoodScarsEvilScars: The series has more examples of "good" scars than evil ones. For the heroic characters: Son Mundeok has scar over his right eye [[RuggedScar (he IS an elderly war hero)]] and Kija has a set on his back (it’s explained in his [[JustForPun backstory]]). While not heroic per-say, there’s also Neguro of Xing’s Five Stars whose face has three very prominent ones. The morally grey Han Joo-Doh has one on his jaw (it actually seems to relate to his HairTriggerTemper, since its shape resembles a bulging vein). For the villains, there’s only Hiyou, who is rather obsessed with the scar on his forehead, which becomes worse after [[spoiler:Yona adds to it]]. Bizarrely, characters such as Hak,[[note]] (only in the manga; the anime adds the long and prominent scar across his chest he received from Tae-Jun's soldiers in chapter nine)[[/note]] Shin-Ah, and Jae-Ha apparently lack any scars to despite all the injuries they endure during the series (Kija also never gets any more; this is justified with [[spoiler:Zeno]] alone); also Yona never seems to get any to despite some considerable injuries (it could be that Kusanagi-sensei simply doesn’t bother to draw them, however).

* {{Bishounen}}:
** Both Yoon and Zeno, since they look younger and less built than the rest of the primary male cast but are nonetheless considered attractive. Mizari also sort of fits this trope when not being a CreepyChild for once. And then there’s [[TheCutie Tae-Yeon]]…
** In the [[{{Flashback}} flashbacks]] to their childhoods, Hak, Soo-Won, and the Dragon Warriors all fit this like a glove.

* CatchPhrase: Yoon's is "I'm a [[{{Bishounen}} genius pretty boy]]." He also gets a lot of mileage out of "This is so troublesome."

** Subverted with Yona; who Hak firmly believed only liked [[{{Bishonen}} pretty boys]] due to her longtime infatuation with Suwon. In side content, Yona herself admits to feeling confused about her "type", given the pretty wide gulf of looks and manner between her [[NobleMaleRoguishMale past and current crush]].

* PeekABangs: Kye-Sook, Soo-Won's advisor, and Jae-Ha both have bangs hanging over one eye. In the former's case, it easily marks him as a sinister conspirator, while in the latter's, it makes him look more mysterious.

* CatchPhrase: Yoon's is "I'm a [[{{Bishounen}} genius pretty boy]]." He also gets a lot of mileage out of "This is so troublesome."

* BashBrothers: Hak, Kija, Shin-Ah, and Jae-Ha -- [[spoiler:and sometimes Zeno, but only if things become very dire and he needs to step in]] -- routinely fight together and protect each other to take out large swarms of enemies. Kija even likes to consider the Dragon Warriors actual brothers, despite the lack of a blood-relation between any of them ([[spoiler:Guen, the original Hakuryuu warrior, [[GenerationXerox had the same thoughts]]]]). Similarly, Zeno [[spoiler:and the other original dragon warriors, came to feel this way about each other, so Zeno views their successors as his nephews]].

* HasAType: An Lili, to her father's chagrin, has zero interest in Soo-Won; despite being 17, to her men are older than 35 and "wild". [[UnrequitedTragicMaiden Granted, this is implied to be because Guen-Tae is her model of the ideal man.]]

* TriangRelations:
** Before Soo-won's betrayal, Yona, Hak and Soo-won had this. Either type 5, type 9, or even possibly type 2. Hak was in love with Yona, Yona pined for her cousin Soo-Won, and Soo-won and Hak were very close friends. It's not clear whether or not Soo-Won was ever in love with Yona, if he was aware of her feelings toward him or even if he was aware of Hak's feelings toward her.
** Later both Jae-Ha and Kija seem to have a variant of type 4 with [[spoiler:Yona and Hak once they become mutual (albeit, unbeknownst to each other)]]. Despite it, both seem [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy pretty supportive of the relationship]] and often make an effort not to get between the two.

** Although he is an AntiVillain, not a hero, Soo-Won [[LoveYouAndEverybody has no such interest,]] it would appear.

* LoveYouAndEverybody: In Hak's flashback in chapter 125, he asks Suwon if he likes Yona--obviously meaning in a romantic sense. Suwon answers yes, but then goes on to say he also likes Hak and all the generals of Kouka too.

* InnocentCohabitation: Yona is the only girl in a group full of guys and on occasion, she shares a tent with one guy (mostly Yoon).

* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: The generals of the five tribes tend to be extremely strong warriors. The wind tribe even specifically picks its strongest fighter to be its general.

* MayflyDecemberRomance: [[spoiler:[[CompleteImmortality Zeno]] was married to an IllGirl for a few years, as she was [[IncurableCoughOfDeath mortally ill]], their marriage didn't last long nor did they have any descendants]].

* CryCute: Yona remains just as cute and pretty while crying.

* IllBoy: Son Tae-Yeon seems to have asthma, which was frequently deadly up until the mid-twentieth century (long after the series’ time frame).
* IllGirl: Kaya, [[spoiler:Zeno’s wife]], was terminally ill, probably with tuberculosis.

* BadassNormal: Although he is traveling with a bunch of dragon-humans, Hak is one of, if not, ''the'' strongest in the group [[UpToEleven (he’s AT LEAST on par with the dragon warriors, even when injured).]] He's also the only member of the group to have never been captured.

* CharacterDevelopment: This series has this ''[[UpToEleven in spades,]]'' as almost every important character experiences this.

** Both Yona and [[spoiler:Lili]] begin as {{Distressed Damsel}}s, usually due to fear and shock, and then, through CharacterDevelopment, become damsels out of distress [[UpToEleven in spades]], and when the situation doesn’t allow for that, they become [[DefiantCaptive defiant captives.]]

* GoodThingYouCanHeal: [[spoiler:Zeno's power is [[CompleteImmortality immortality.]]]] He does not age and will heal from any wound, even ''[[UpToEleven decapitation.]]'' When he receives major injuries, he will also gain SuperToughness.

** All dragon warriors are capable of this, and most of those seen in the manga have been known to be able to take down ridiculous numbers of fighters on their own. In fact, [[spoiler:Shin-Ah first did this [[UpToEleven at the tender age of four]] by using his powers]].

* {{Biseinen}}: Much of the male main cast are very attractive, usually straddling the line between this and {{Hunk}}, especially Hak and the Dragon Warriors (minus [[{{Bishounen}} Zeno]]), this is frequently lampshaded. Soo-Won, most of Kouka’s generals, [[spoiler:the original Dragon Warriors, King Hiryuu]], and Xing’s Five Stars all fit this pattern as well.

* UnrequitedLoveSwitcheroo: Played with with [[spoiler:Hak and Yona after chapter 110 and onward]]. While the former hasn't moved on from his feelings for the latter, he appears to have [[HopelessSuitor abandoned all hope of her ever returning them.]] Now ''he'' appears to be the the one who's ObliviousToLove [[SelectiveObliviousness and never seems to notice]] [[spoiler:Yona's CrushBlush flaring up only around him]].

* AdaptationDistillation: In the manga, Zeno's powers are revealed at the climax of an arc, which then segues into a flashback arc detailing his backstory, with a FramingDevice of him falling asleep and dreaming after the battle. When his backstory was animated for a short, two half-hour episode OVA, Creator/StudioPierrot skipped revealing it to the other characters, and instead used the extra chapter "From Good Morning to Good Night," about the cast having a drinking competition, as the framing device.[[note]]Minus the gag where Hak and Jae-Ha try to get Zeno disqualified when they realize his powes give him an advantage.[[/note]] The flashback happens when Zeno falls asleep during the drinking contest, letting the animators get to it faster while also giving the rest of the characters some spotlight.

* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Justified. The four dragons (with the strangest hair colours like white, blue, green, and yellow) [[spoiler:and Yona]] all have hair the same colour as the dragons they represent. [[ImplausibleHairColor People like Soo-Won and Yoon]] on the other hand... It is only outside of Kouka that green and blue hair are commented upon, hinting that the blood of the dragon’s has something to do with this. Interestingly, Yona’s hair is only commented on within Kouka.

The Kingdom of Kohka is a country that's said to have been founded by the Red Dragon, Hiryuu. To protect their brother, four other dragon deities gave their powers to four warriors. The White Dragon's power is incredible strength in their scaled right arm. The Blue Dragon's power is the ability to paralyze someone by looking into their heart. The Green Dragon's power is the ability to jump great distances and deliver destructive kicks with their scaled left leg. The Yellow Dragon's power lies in its an indestructible body and quick regenerative abilities.

None of this really matters to Yona, though. The only daughter of the current King, Yona has lived a very sheltered life. King Il loves her dearly, letting her have anything she desires so long as it's not related to violence. Truth be told, Yona's only concerns are about taming her wild red hair, getting her bodyguard, Hak, to take her seriously, and one day marrying her beloved cousin, Su-won.

This peaceful life is upended on her sixteenth birthday. Su-won kills her father and sets up Hak as the murderer. Now that the palace is hostile territory, Hak flees with Yona to his hometown of Fuuga. During their stay, they learn about a priest that could potentially help them, one who lives close to Fuuga. When they meet him, the priest tells Yona a prophecy related to her and her country's future. He advises her to find the four dragons from Kohka's founding myth, for not even Hak can protect her on his own forever.

** Yona and her group pretend to be bandits, who took control of the Fire Tribe's villages, though they don't pillage and plunder and only beat up the officers, who intend to collect heavy taxes from the already impoverished and starving villagers. [[RealityEnsues It turns bloody when a village child then meets actual bandits and mistakes them to be as nice as Yona.]]

* RealityEnsues:
** When [[spoiler:the dragons are feverish and weak]], despite their power, they are eventually overwhelmed by the sheer number of attacking soldiers.
** Constantly interfering with several major events will eventually cause word to spread about you, as Yona and co. find out after Princess Tao specifically seeks them out at the beginning of the Xing arc. Likewise, once the dragons lose the anonymity that being "mythical" entails, they have a significantly more difficult time dealing with armies since the soldiers now know to target them specifically. This culminates in the Tully Tribe arc, [[spoiler:which saw Yona, Jae-ha, Zeno, and Yun injured and captured, and Hak nearly killed in the ensuing battle with the Tully Tribe to get them back]].
