** Kasumi and her friend Tanuma are friends of the anime ''[=OrePotato=]'', which is about a girl who gets into a romantic relationship with her big brother. It's probably a reference to ''LightNovel/{{Oreimo}}'' (and a joke about how blind Kasumi is to her own feelings towards Takamiya). Coincidentally, "imo" is a Japanese word for "potato."

* PlayingWithFire: While it's not her only power, Kagari uses a lot of fire-based magic

* GoldfishPoopGang: The group of five Tower Witches that keep attacking Kagari and Takamiya quickly turns into this. The downside is that it drains her magic whenever this happens. A massive magic explosion that completely damages the city, caused by the witch Weekend, ultimately renders her powerless for a week.]]

* BerserkButton: You don't ''try to separate Takamiya from Kagari.'' Else savor a ''good'' amount of TranquilFury from her.

* ThreeDEffectsTwoDCartoon: Most notable when any Witch is flying past buildings and vehicles, or large familiars are on the screen.

* ConspicuousCG: Most notable when any Witch is flying past buildings and vehicles, or large familiars are on the screen.

* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Kagari's first overt act to protect Honoka is to cover him from Tanpopo's bunny army, and when he wakes up, she's still over him... because of the all the blades through her body holding her up. Her not really caring about the swords through her torso and arms is a first hint of just how powerful a Witch can get.

* ButchLesbian: Kazane, at least in her highschool days. She is confirmed to be one of the most dangerous students at her school at the time, and had a deep romantic relationship with Takamiya.

* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Any witch with '-End' in their actual witch title. It used to indicate a witch who could 'end the world' with their power alone but nowadays, a witch who reaches a sufficient level of notoriety and power is given this - similar to reaching Hall of Famer status. This also doubles as a RedBaron since any witch who has this has more than ''earned'' it. Both Kagari Kazame and Chronoire Schwartz are 'End Witches'.

* NoEnding: The anime only lasted [[TwelveEpisodeAnime 12 episodes]] (13 if you count the [=OVA=]) and thus ended with many subplots unresolved, such as the Tower Witches still at large, Chronoire's interest in Evermillion unresolved and the shared past between Honoka and Ayaka still a mystery. The only sense of finality is that Honoka accepts magic as part of his everyday life.

* OrderVersusChaos: The ideological divide between the Workshop and Tower witches largely boils down to this. Workshop witches believe in upholding the established order and policing the actions of witches. The Tower witches meanwhile believe in having the complete freedom to pursue whatever power or goals they like. As such, not all workshop witches are good (like some members of the Kagari clan), and not all Tower witches evil (with the likes of Chronoire and Medusa being AffablyEvil and Kazane herself being a former Tower witch who was defined by beating the crap out of any evil beast or witch she found.)

** Touko seems to have no conscious control over her ice powers and they mostly manifest when she feels threatened, though not necessarily in a way that would help. Examples include tripping onto a parfait and freezing it solid, spontaneously creating a snowman to hide behind, freezing herself into a block of ice when bullied by Kagari, and creating a glacier when Kagari throws her into a pack of Tower witches..

** [[spoiler:Played straight with Medusa's underlings, who are also in his house, hiding in Kagari's room due to a deal she made with Medusa.]]

* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: See the bit about the Crusades, above. This is also implied for the more powerful witches. FridgeLogic sets in when you realize that Kazane went to school with Takamiya-kun's mother, Komachi.
* RememberTheNewGuy: A minor one, Takamiya's sister isn't even mentioned or hinted at until chapter 7 where Takamiya narrates who she is. This is rectified in the anime where she gets an appearance[[note]]seen from behind at first, then in the background stalking Kagari and her brother[[/note]] as early as the second episode before her introduction in the fourth.

[[spoiler:She balks at his sudden answer, and tells him that she wasn't serious about it, but was testing his trust in her, since he was responsible for her turning in the first place, so he needed to have a strong bond with her to reverse the condition.]]

* SlidingScaleOfSillinessVersusSeriousness: A giant Teddy bear wrestling a giant evil bunny knight and witches arguing with a waitress as to whether a llama counts as a pet; yes, it's this ''silly''.

* SquishyWizard: While some of the lower-ranked witches are noticeably 'squishy', most of the higher lvl witches are definitely NOT. Both mother and daughter Kagari, in particular, are well-known for their 'brute force' tactics even without using magic. Kagari has incredible physical strength and fighting skills thanks to her mother's TrainingFromHell. Chronoire is also quite a lethal fighter, and even takes out several other Tower witches on her own near the end of the anime simply because she was bored.
* StalkerShrine: Chapter 38 reveals that [[spoiler:Kagari]] has a secret room filled with nothing but photos of [[spoiler:Takamiya]].

* StealthPun: The soundtrack albums for the anime all have covers spoofing the cover art of various albums by the techno group Kraftwerk [[spoiler:making them witch Kraftwerks]].
* TheStinger: At the end of episode 5, Chronoire is attacked by the Workshop witches and captured. Kazane then proceeds to torture her because of the latest incident in that episode which caused the former's mansion to collapse.

* TakenForGranite: Medusa's power, as you can expect. Takamiya is immune to it [[spoiler:due to being the vessel for Evermilion]]. [[spoiler:Kagari is ''not'' immune to it, but in a strange way: when Takamiya loses confidence in Kagari's ability to win against Medusa, the protection he grants to her is weakened]].
** He's not quite immune to her power so much as she kept her eyes covered and bound her arms in a weird straitjacket just to see if she ''could'' capture him while bound.
* TakingYouWithMe: In episode 10, Rinon tries to negotiate more time to find Takamiya after Weekend sends a workshop witch rigged with explosives to go off after thirty minutes if he isn't brought to her. The latter then taunts them further, by stating that she's weak physically, and wouldn't be a match in a fight with the former. But even if they defeat her, the bombs would still go off, so there would still be casualties.
* ThatCameOutWrong: Kuraishi just has to say it... [[spoiler:She means Evermilion.]] At least her friend does realize and warns her about the other ''implications''.

** When Takamiya mentions Kagari getting love letters and then he ends up getting hate mail when he opens his locker.

* TortureForFunAndInformation: When scheming villain witch by the name of Weekend moves her plan-to-corner-protagonists into the violent phase, Chronoire the unclear agenda self-fulfilling villainous witch decides she'd like to have a piece of the mastermind. The plot follows protagonists, and the short comic relief scene at one point has Chronoire together with her anthropomorphic crocodile helper wielding a hair-trimmer in a mock of a barbershop setup. Chronoire's idea of an incentive for the distressed BoundAndGagged nameless [[{{Mook}} pawn witch of the invasion force]] to speak of Weekend's whereabouts -- is a threat to vandalize victim's long hair into something more appropriate to the surrounding apocalypse landscape.

** In episode 10, Kagari singled-handedly stops a Tower Witch without the use of her magic by kneeing her in the face. When both the witch and Takamiya inquire as to how, she tells them that she was forced to fight really difficult opponents without magic while growing up. A FlashBack then shows her mother atop some giant vicious looking monsters, while telling Kagari and Rinon they can't have dinner until the monsters are defeated.
* VillainDecay: Tanpopo's group of witches. While they were certainly a threat early on, by the latter part of the series they largely end up helping the workshop witches more than hindering them, and being played mostly for comedy relief.

** Tanpopo dispels the bombs set on the hostage workshop witches Weekend set up in episode 10, buying a little bit of time to prevent her from killing them.
** Medusa ends up rescuing Kasumi in episode 11, then grabs four of the witches in Tanpopo's group, presumably to punish them for not helping the latter in that fight.

* WhamLine: Kazane gives one to Kagari in episode 7, [[spoiler:after the latter merged with Medusa. She tells her daughter that Evermillion doesn't like corruption, and by merging with her, Kagari lost her powers of invincibility granted to her by her.]]
* WoundedGazelleGambit: The former student council president does this towards Rinon in episode 8. She basically tells the latter that Takamiya did horrible things to her and then usurped her position at school. [[spoiler:She then immediately clarifies and says it was all a lie, but Rinon was apparently too fired up by that point to hear that part, and believes he really did all those things. This backfires on her after Rinon finds out that she lied about all of it.]]
* XanatosGambit: Weekend has several traps in store to ensure she can capture Takamiya. She first takes Kazane out of the picture by setting off a massive bomb throughout the city and forcing her to use up her magic to save it. Then she captures some workshop witches and rigs them with explosives set to go off if they don't bring Takamiya to her. And even after she's captured, she sets off some regular explosives to escape a cell the workshop witches put her in. And then sets off some other explosives to take out the remaining workshop witches gathering around the field in the school.

* DistressedDude: The premise of this manga.
* DoItYourselfThemeTune: "Witch☆Activity" anime ending theme is sung by the ensemble of Medusa underlings. It can double as ImageSong for that gang of Tower witches. Another song from the Ending Theme single album is briefly flashed to be something those bored, put on standby witches even sing in karaoke.
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: Takamiya has some when walking to school with Kagari for the first time. It's largely due to all the scorn being heaped on him by her jealous fan club.

* EnemyMine: Kasumi forces Tanpopo's group to help them defeat Weekend in episode 10. The latter says they're only doing it to earn their keep in the house, later stating that one bomb deactivated on the workshop witches being held hostage would equal to one month's rent.
* EpicFail: Takamiya is told to kiss Kagari in an attempt to help resurrect her after she sacrificed herself in his stead during episode 12. Atori, who is helping him with it, watches as he does it. He lowers himself to her lips, only to then suddenly swerve at the last second, and kisses her on the forehead instead. Atori is understandably upset at it, and Takamiya tries to argue he's not ready to kiss Kagari on the lips. Fortunately for them that kiss on the forehead works, as Atori hilariously tries to push his head down and force him to kiss her after his failed first attempt.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Kagari is the tall, cool type, constantly surrounded by a huge female fan club. So when she decides to stop guarding Takamiya from the shadows and spend the day by his side, he is instantly hated.
* EveryScarHasAStory: [[spoiler:Kagari sports a long, thin, diagonal scar across her abdomen. This is why she doesn't wear midriff-baring clothing when its obvious that she'd look good in it. Thing is, Takamiya notes that it is virtually identical to the scar on his mother's ''left shoulder''. Neither one tells him how they got it, which in Kagari's case, she doesn't remember how she got it in the first place.]]
* EverythingsBetterWithLlamas: A trio of luckless Tower Witches go around with a llama, even complaining when a restaurant refuses to seat it. It also tends to get tied up when they're captured.
* EvilKnockoff: During their invasion, one of the Weekend's masked underlings gets locked in a fight with Kasumi. To ire of the latter, the underling mimicks her every move and rides a miscolored but otherwise identical giant plushie bear summon. Of the onlooking Medusa's Tower Witches, one contemplates if this can be described as a ''doppelganger'' attack. Another one "knowingly" agrees, along the lines of calling it a doppel that does a ganger.

%%* FlyingBroomstick: Goes along with the pointy-hat witch aesthetic, and is somehow magically stored within witches' robes.

* FunnyBackgroundEvent: Take note of the [[MobileShrubbery box]] following Kagari and Takamiya around in episode 2.

** Also in episode 2, while at the maid cafe, Takamiya tries to eat the item he ordered, but it's been completely frozen due to Touko falling on it and freezing it. He tries to gnaw at it, but to no avail.

* GoldfishPoopGang: The group of tower witches that keeps attacking Kagari and Takamiya quickly turns into this. In the third episode, Kagari [[ATwinkleInTheSky blasts them all into the stratosphere]] with [[CurbStompBattle a single shot]]. They're later shown arguing about whether you can ride a llama to school.
* GoodIsNotNice: Many of the Craft Witches, while utterly dedicated to protecting their city and the people in it, can be just ruthless and cruel as their opponents, the Tower Witches, when fighting. More specifically, Kasumi outright states that she doesn't really care what side she's on; her only concern is protecting Takamiya.

** In the first episode, as Takamiya is getting beat up by some of Kagari's fanboys and girls, the guy beating him up says "The best... is yet... to come!"
** In episode 8, after Rinon and her minions trash the school, she delivers a letter of challenge to him. As they leave, he says "What?", trying to comtemplate what just happened.

* HarmlessVillain: The Cherry and Star Teams are affiliated with the Tower Witches but otherwise are not a threat to Ayane. They also are rarely seen abusing their magic and are often portrayed [[VillainsOutShopping doing mundane things like singing karaoke.]] It can be argued that they are even [[MinionWithAnFInEvil minions with an F in evil]] they hardly do anything actually ''evil''.

* HumanoidAbomination: Kagari. Let's put things simply: she's not on fire, she IS fire.
** In general, the most powerful witches aren't quite human.

* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Takamiya is stabbed with a kitchen knife by Weekend in episode 12. It doesn't seem to faze him much, as he pulls it out, pushes her down, and nearly stabs her with it as well.
* ImpossiblyCoolClothes: Some witches have some quite unrealistic outfits... But their clothes are really cool and awesome, so who cares!.

** Mikage sensei mentioned before that males in witch families don't have a high standing in their families so it is likely that it's just the women who have a more prominent role when working which would explain why there are so many more women shown.
* InnocentInnuendo: One of Tower Witches calls herself out on being an idiot, for even trying to get through to her comrade cat-eared rabbit-wielding witch girl, Tanpopo, as the latter is oblivious to how saying that Ayaka is only after ''the white stuff'', which is ''inside his body'', could cause any misunderstanding. Takamiya himself, however, is dumbfounded thinking he didn't get that right.

* InvisibleToNormals: The witches when wearing their witch outfits, although it doesn't become obvious until episode 8 [[spoiler:after Kagari and the others help Takamiya to win his fight against Rinon.]]

* LivingWithTheVillain: The Tower Witches under Medusa, including Medusa, eventually start living at the house of the Takamiyas. One amusing omake has Ayaka in charge of feeding them. She throws them a bar of chocolate to be shared among all six of them while she feeds Honoka blowfish nabe.

* MalaProper: Takamiya is unable to remember correctly the last name of Tanpopo, ''Kuraishi''', calling her "Crazy-san" or some other english words.

* AchillesHeel: Kagari is ''made of fire'' and as such is effectively invulnerable except if [[spoiler: you attack Takamiya]]
* AffablyEvil: The Tower witches in general. While they do attack Takamiya from time to time, they are also seen doing somewhat regular activities as well, such as eating at a restaurant, or singing karaoke. The likes of Medusa and Chronoire even team up with the heroes at times depending on their current whims. Medusa eventually lampshades this, pointing out Tower witches are all about pursuing their personal desires, so there's no reason to not help out the heroes if they feel like it, even if they may change their minds just as easily later.

* ArrangedMarriage: Between Kagari and Takamiya, set up by their mothers.
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: If Takamiya were to fall into the hands of the Tower Witches: All humans would die, the Earth would explode, the Demon King would return, and Giraffes' necks would elongate.
* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: Many witches' familiars can grow this big.
** Kasumi took it UpToEleven after being double teamed by Tanpopo and Rin, she makes her familiar grow so big that one stomp takes them both out. She tops even that with Rinon's encouragement in chapter 32; her familiar's height reaches into [[spoiler: low earth orbit]]!
* BarrierMaiden: [[spoiler:Kagari's mother. She maintains a city-wide magic field that prevents civilians from being injured or killed by magical attacks. The downside is that it drains her magic whenever this happens. A massive magic explosion that completely damages the city, caused by the witch Weekend, ultimately renders her powerless for a week.]]
** [[spoiler: Later Takamiya makes the same contract as her, allowing the Workshop Witches to use magic again and restoring the protection of the city.]]
* BattleOfTheStillFrames: The fight between Chronoire and Kazane in episode 12 boils down to the two trading blows in a bunch of still shots, with Kazane ultimately coming out on top.

** If someone ever tries to do ''anything'' to him... That person should at least write a last will before...
* BigBrotherAttraction: Kasumi denies that her feelings towards Honoka are nothing but sibling affection... even though she insists in ''sleeping'' together and ''bathing'' together and gets ''jealous'' of his brother's almost-girlfriend... Subverted in chapter 31; it is revealed that she views sexual love between male and female to be disgusting. She still loves her brother but in a more innocent way.
* BigFancyHouse: Exaggerated. Kagari lives in an impossibly gigantic 41-story mansion, which has synchronized army of maids. Her mother even lampshades how nice their house is [[spoiler:and is freaked out when it's destroyed during the fight against Medusa]]. She notes this is ''just'' her mother's mansion. The family has another mansion elsewhere.

** The ending animation revels in BurnTheWitch. While the Witches are singing the ending.

* BrutalHonesty: Kagari seems to be fond of this.
* ButchLesbian: Kazane, at least in her highschool days.
* ButtMonkey: Tanpopo and her Tower Witches friends. They are legitimately dangerous to muggles, but they are nobodies compared to Kagari, who wipes the floor with them.

* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Takamiya has this, if he has the means to help someone he feels he should do it.

* ConservationOfNinjutsu: Kagari's early battles appear this way. Individuals battling her can take a while. Whereas when she's fighting groups of them, she beats them pretty quickly.
* ConspicuousCG: Most notable when any witch is flying past buildings and vehicles.
* CruelToBeKind: In episode 9, Kagari leads Takamiya to a hidden area below the school grounds after they suffer a massive city-wide bombing. [[spoiler:He is attacked by some of the workshop witches, causing Kagari to retaliate against them, but the damage he sustained transfers over to her before she can knock them all out. Kasumi is also knocked out before she can do anything to protect him. Rinon then explains to him that they have to hide him because someone dangerous is looking for him. Due to what they just went through, he complies and both he and Kagari are put into a room meant to hide their presence. Unfortunately it doesn't work as Weekend's teddy bear finds him and displays a message stating she's going to find him.]]
* CrossCounter: A battle between a giant [[BearsAreBadNews teddy bear]] and a [[KillerRabbit a giant rabbit.]]

* ADayInTheLimelight: The anime extra episode ("OVA") features a clash of obsessions, narrated from the point of view of the protagonist's possessive jealous sister Kasumi as she orchestrates an assault on Kagari, since Kagari's magic powers have yet to return after the outcome of the original broadcast last episode.
* DealWithTheDevil: [[spoiler:Kagari seems to have made one with Medusa at the end of episode 6, although it doesn't get fully explored until episode 7.]]

* DefeatMeansFriendship: While it takes a couple of defeats before it happens, Tanpopo and her gang of tower witches are seen living with Takamiya and Kagari in his house, secretly in episode 7, but with his mom's blessing by episode 8. They even help Kagari with Takamiya's duel against Rinon in episode 8. Even Chronoire is running the school for a day for Kazane.
* DidntSeeThatComing: In chapter 30, [[spoiler:The Tanpopo's group of tower witches sans Tapopo, are working for Medusa and use powerful magic to deage Kagari to like a 4-5 year old, to a weaker point in her life]]. When they attack Takamiya, Kagari still shows up and curbstomps them, even though [[spoiler:she is still a child]]. This means [[spoiler:Kagari was a fully empowered witch before she was 4-5 years old]].
* DisproportionateRetribution: As is always the case in settings like this, once Kagari starts talking with Takamiya (the latter of whom knows about her popularity but never expressed any interest in talking with). He starts getting beaten up by some of the Student Council over it. Kagari eventually puts a stop to it.

* BeachEpisode: Averted in episode 9. Takamiya mentions a beach trip with Kagari, and she's seen in a swimsuit, but then it turns out to be a dream.

* AloofDarkHairedGirl: Kagari fits ''every'' part required for this trope. She even provides the trope image.

* BigFancyHouse: Kagari lives in a [[ExaggeratedTrope 41-floor skyscraper]]. Her mother even lampshades how nice their house is [[spoiler:and is freaked out when it's destroyed during the fight against Medusa]]. She notes this is ''just'' her mother's mansion. The family has another mansion elsewhere.

* EarCleaning: Used in episode 7 between Kagari and Takamiya as a method of forming a stronger bond with each other.
* EffortlessAmazonianLift: Kagari carries Takamiya all the time, especially when she rescues him.
** Justified, as the cape she wears endows increased strength.

* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Nearly [[FanGirl every single girl]] in the school {{Squee}}s when Kagari is nearby. They even form lines wrapped around the classroom so girls can 'talk' with her during breaks between classes.

* EvolvingCredits: The ending gradually adds characters introduced during the episode. For example, in episode 02 Kagari's mother Kazane and her familiar, as well as the three Tower Witches that attacked them in the city, are now included.

* SpitTake: Chapter 9, and several characters do it in the anime as well, so much so that it becomes a RunningGag with Kazane not wanting anything strange to happen while drinking tea.

* TortureForFunAndInformation: As a brief peek into Chronoire realizing her plan to learn Weekend's whereabouts, there's a torture scene with [[{{Mook}} a pawn witch]] of Weekend's invasion force on the receiving end. The BoundAndGagged nameless agitated witch is shown set up in a barber shop client-like fashion. Should the captive not oblige, all-smiles Chronoir promises her a ''haircut'' fitting the apocalyptic look the ruined city has at the moment.

* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Kagari in spades.

* AffablyEvil: The Tower witches in general. While they do attack Takamiya from time to time, they are also seen doing somewhat regular activities as well, such as eating at a restaurant, or singing karaoke.

* FauxAffablyEvil: [[spoiler:The Tower Witches Chronoire Schwartz VI and Medusa. While Chrono seems very unassuming and likes to engage in conversation but she's one of the strongest Tower witches in the series. A hint is given in episode 7 of the anime, when Chrono asks why Kazane ordered every Workshop witch in the city to hunt her down.]]
