Loads And Loads Of Characters is no longer a trope

* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: With five teams of eight members, you already have 40 characters. Even as they dwindled, there are also the characters that made the ''7 Seeds'' Project a reality; the teachers and other minor characters that appear for an arc; and even just listing the important candidates for Team Summer A, you easily reach over 100 characters.

In the near future, scientists discovered that a meteor was headed towards Earth and that if it hit it was expected to wipe out almost all life. World leaders met and tested a number of countermeasures. In the worst case scenario, if none of the countermeasures worked and the human race died out entirely, they created a final project, "7 Seeds". Each country took young and healthy people and put them in a cryogenic sleep: when conditions on Earth had become safe enough to live in again, they would be released.

In Japan, the 7 Seeds project was organized into five teams of seven people: Team Winter, Team Spring, Team Summer A, Team Summer B, and Team Fall. The story begins some unknown number of years in the future, when Team Summer B wakes up and learns that their entire world has been destroyed and that evolution has begun to repeat itself.

volumes.

!!This manga has examples of:
* ActionGirl: Hana and Botan, among others.
* AerithAndBob: The Ryugu Shelter arc, located around Kansai, has characters like Sadao, Takashi and Tokidoki next to Maria and Mark. And Mark's dead brother Mike.
* AfterTheEnd: The majority of the story takes place after a meteor has destroyed most life on Earth and evolution has begun to repeat itself.
* AllJustADream: Coming to the future was a hallucination/dream/what-if-projection. '''[[MindScrew Or was it?]]''' [[spoiler: It wasn't, they are suffering from hallucinations in the ant nest.]]
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: It's a food-chain of unrequited love! Natsu likes Arashi, though he has a girlfriend. Matsuri likes Ryo, who likes Koruri, who likes Ango, who likes Ayu, who ''might'' like him, but she likes Aramaki, who seems to have a crush on Hana. The only requited love are [[StarCrossedLovers Hana and Arashi]], as well as [[spoiler: Ryusei and Kurumi, and eventually Koruri and Haru,]] up to now. [[spoiler: Some of the characters move on from their unrequited love, though.]]
* AnachronicOrder: Some chapters are like this. We have Team Spring find a note that Natsu wrote in a bunker, but much later get the chapter where Natsu and the others initially get to the bunker. Same with the Team Winter chapters, which take place 15 years before the "present" and the Team Summer A candidates being chosen 20 years before the meteorite even hits.
* AnyoneCanDie: Poor [[spoiler:Team Winter. And Team Summer A candidates]].
* ApocalypseHow: It is a Class Four.
* ApocalypticLog: [[spoiler: Mark's]] journal in one of the ruined shelters.
** What makes it all the more sad was the fact that [[spoiler:had it not been for the disease or the flooding]], it would have been a complete success or at least lasted much longer.
* ArtisticLicenseBiology: From strange rash infections to mutant fungal spores to [[spoiler: iron eating bacteria]], biological actions that normally take weeks, months, or years can take mere days to spread. Minutes or seconds in some cases.
* AxCrazy: Team Summer A becomes a bit unhinged after the final test, and end up [[spoiler:killing their guide, Unami]].
* BerserkButton: Do not try to hurt Hana in front of Arashi. He will hurt you.
** Also, do not make comments about Ango's friends. He will attack you.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Arashi, the sensitive nice guy, nearly killed some guys who threatened his girlfriend before the story began.
** [[SilkHidingSteel Chisa]], the demure and polite young lady, wishes to tear "it" off when she learns that [[spoiler: Ango tried to rape Hana]].
* BigFriendlyDog: Aramaki's dogs.
* BlackBlood: [[spoiler: This is how Maria figures out that she's the carrier of Acari X and spread the virus in the entire shelter]].
* BodyHorror: [[spoiler: Yanagi-san]] being injected with insect eggs that end up bursting out of the face and body as they hatch.
* BreakTheCutie: Happens to several characters, but especially Ango.
* ButWhatAboutTheAstronauts: Aramaki speculates that some (possibly Americans) might have escaped to the Moon and that their descendants might be spying on them.
* CelebritySurvivor: Two variants. First, a few of the team members were somewhat famous- Takahiro and Fubuki were both fairly well-known baseball players, for example. Second, [[spoiler: in the "Ash" arc, several entertainers, including IdolSinger Maria Miki, are included in the underground shelter, to keep the other people there calm and content.]]
* [[CelibateHero Celibate Heroes]]: Rather forced instead of doing it by their own choice. The shelters that were left for them do not contain any kind of birth-control, so Team Autumn has made a ban on any kind of sex that could result in pregnancy and the other Teams overall decide that being celibate is better, until things have settled down decently enough. [[spoiler: Ryusei and Kurumi did not follow this rule, as she is revealed to be pregnant during her second appearance]]
* CharacterDevelopment: As time goes on, the characters grow and develop into fairly competent teams and more sides to several characters are shown.
* CrapsaccharineWorld: Ryugyu in the Ash arc is a large impact shelter disguised as a luxury resort.
* CrapsackWorld: While the post-impact world gives Australia [[EverythingIsTryingToKillYou a run for its money]], life in the times leading up to it is implied to be rather unpleasant.
* CryonicsFailure: What happens to three members of Team Winter.
* CyanidePill: All of the team leaders were given poison so they could kill themselves and the rest of the team if they awaken in situations that are unlivable.
** Eventually, [[spoiler: Botan throws her's away, saying she'll never rely on it]].
** It's revealed in the "Ash" flashback that [[spoiler:Hana's father]] had similar insta-death pills on hand for his confidants in the shelter.
* DeathWorld: The post-impact world (or at least what's left of Japan anyway) seems to be filled with all manners of flora and fauna out to kill you.
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler:Arashi begins to feel that it is hopeless that he will ever reunite with Hana and tries to drown himself.]]
* DueToTheDead: [[spoiler: Koruri and Ango take time during the Final Test to cover Mayu and Hyo's bodies with rocks.]]
* EnsembleCast: Five Teams, eight people, at least a 40-characters cast in the beginning. Begins to dwinled as the series proceeds, but nonetheless still keeps its focus on several people.
* ExposedToTheElements: Completely subverted, they feel the elements very well. Arashi made sure to cover himself with seaweed in order to keep warm when he was floating in the ocean and covered himself with it during the day to not attract any attention but also to stay out of direct sunlight for too long.
* EyeScream: The [[spoiler: Acari X]] parasitoids feast off their host's body as long as possible and finally eat their way out through the eyeballs.
* EasternZodiac: Wood carvings of the zodiac are used to give the Summer A candidates clues as to when the next part of the final test will happen.
* {{Fanservice}}: Quite a bit for the readers, generally curtesy of Arashi and some other men by going topless when swimming or bathing, but the women show us their goods at times, too. Especially [[TheTease Botan]].
* FlingALightIntoTheFuture: Deconstructed, the manga going long ways to show both the effects this has on the people involved and the sort of sacrifices needed to pull this off.
* FriendshipMoment: Several throughout the series, though some seem to go into the ''extreme'' category...
** Ryo reveals that the reason he tried to [[spoiler: kill Haru and Hana]] was because their presence made Ango emotionally unstable and Ryo wanted to protect him from that.
** Natsu [[ShrinkingViolet musters up her courage]] and apologizes to Matsuri because of a short conversation they had the day earlier and Natsu feels she hurt Matsuri's feelings. Matsuri thanks Natsu for that and says she realizes that she doesn't have to somehow "play a part" around Natsu.
** Semimaru asking Natsu if she did her best on her own while she ended up separated from the rest. Natsu says she did and Semimaru praises her... [[LovingBully and then immediately teases her about it]].
* GivingSomeoneThePointerFinger: Semimaru to Arashi, after Arashi referred to Semimaru's hometown as "the place with all the eels."
* GoOutWithASmile: Several people over the course of the series. The biggest example is [[spoiler: practically everyone in the Ryugu Shelter arc, special mention to [[HeroicSacrifice Takashi's wife Miho]], Mark and Maria]], but also several characters during Team Summer A's Final Test, [[spoiler: like Mayu and Hyo, as well as Shigeru]].
* TheGreatestStoryNeverTold:
** Had the characters never found [[spoiler:Mark's corpse and journal]], the tragic, bittersweet story of the Ryugyu shelter would have been lost forever. And they would have likely been unaware of the reason ''why'' said shelter ended up that way.
** An in-universe example: The mangaka's story "Wonderful Q" was finished in the Ryugu Shelter with the question "What is Q?" finally being answered, but the answer is never shown to us. Likely, though, by the time the team stumbles over it, it's been lost forever.
* HeroicBSOD: About half of the members of Team Summer A get this after they are selected. The other half just look stunned/angry/murderous.
* HighschoolSweethearts: Hana's parents, Takashi and Miho, dated during school and got married young while still in college.
** Hana may seem to have thought this might happen with her and Arashi, imagining her dying of old age next to Arashi, but then... the plot happens...
* HopeSpot: The Ryugyu shelter is revealed to be part of a network of others scattered throughout Japan. [[spoiler:But due to the fact that most if not all were implied to have eventually been cut off from each other]], odds are that maybe one of them may still have people living there.
* HumanPopsicle: All of the characters were cryonically frozen before the meteor hit.
* HumansAreBastards: Holy high-flying Hell, what ''wasn't'' done in an attempt to keep humanity alive?
** To be fair, some of the more desperate and abhorrent acts were meant to be last-ditch emergency measures in the event something went wrong in the shelters. [[spoiler: Like in Mark's.]] That said, there really isn't much excuse for [[spoiler: killing the failed Summer A candidates... especially the ones like Nobara, who was a kid and died for ''having poor eyesight''.]]
** The modus operandi for "recruiting" most of the 7 Seed Teams involve taking candidates against their will ''without ever knowing about it'' until they woke up
* IdiosyncraticEpisodeNaming: All the chapters in the Team Summer A arc have the titles of classical music pieces.
** Those of the Ash arc are based on old movie and book titles such as ''Literature/OnTheBeach'' and ''Literature/WutheringHeights.''
* InfantImmortality: Horribly subverted. Aside from TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt obviously killing off practically everyone, the children in the Ryugu Shelter also don't make it. And the less we say about the Team Summer A candidates, the better...
* IntimateHealing: Ango and Arashi, during the Minor Heat arc, wrap up nude in an Emergency Blanket due to being drenched and cold.
** Again, this time between Koruri and Haru, in the Ocean/Mountain Arc when Haru is freezing from having been in cold water. They both strip and wrap up in her jacket.
* ItSeemedLikeAGoodIdeaAtTheTime: The scientist of the Open Sado Project who discovered a new species of ants that thrived on the energy bars the shelter was stocked with. [[spoiler: Needless to say, they escaped, grew huge and apparently killed all the scientists. [[NiceJobBreakingItHero Nice job, Scientist]]!]]
* IWillFindYou: Hana and Arashi.
* JerkAss: Most of the teachers of the Summer A candidates, but especially Unami.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Semimaru and Ryou can seem incredibly jerky but they have hidden soft sides.
* JustBeforeTheEnd: The flashbacks largely take place at some point or another before the Impact actually occurs. [[spoiler:Mark's tale in the Ryugyu arc in fact starts off ''a few days'' before the Impact happens.]]
* KillEmAll: [[spoiler: All Team Summer A candidates are killed except the top seven.]]
** The plan behind the [[spoiler: Fuji Ship's]] missles and nuclear bomb.
* KillerRabbit: Team Summer B encounters some cute, fuzzy rodents. Then it turns out that half of the rabbits are carnivorous monsters that try to eat them and the other half are prey. Oddly enough, it's one of the few serious examples of this trope.
* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: With five Teams of eight members, you already have 40 characters. Add the important characters who made the 7 Seeds Project a reality, as well as characters that pop up later and are revealed to be important, you easily double that number. And just mentioning the important ''candidates'' for Team Summer A, you can reach 100 characters. [[AnyoneCanDie Even if some of the Team members die]].
* LookOnMyWorksYeMightyAndDespair: Seems to be the predominant theme regarding the relics of human civilization. The Ryugyu shelter in the "Ash" arc in particular was touted as a marvel of engineering and technology. By the time the Teams find the complex, it's just barely functioning, with the structure's integrity hanging by a thread. [[spoiler:And that's not getting to what happened with the people...]]
* LoveConfession: Played with. When Matsuri confesses her feelings to Ryo, he [[ObliviousToLove doesn't quite understand her words of "liking" him, wanting to "go out" with him]] and similar, unless she means having children with him, which he rejects (for now) due to things being hectic.
** Same chapter, Natsu confesses her feelings to Arashi, who returns them... in an illusion. Arashi returning her feelings make Natsu also realize that she loves the Arashi who is in love with Hana [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy more than actually being loved by him]].
* ManEatingPlant: Natsu and Arashi run afoul of these early on, but are rescued.
* ManipulativeBastard: Pretty much every adult in this series is a terrible person, but the teachers are the school are the worst.
** The exception or subversion seemed to have been [[spoiler:Mark and the others in his shelter]]. Too bad they're long dead. Botan seems to be the only nice adult still alive.
* TheMedic: Two of them- aspiring doctor Fujiko of Team Spring, and Ban of Team Summer A, who is top in the medical classes. Although the latter is unhappy with his abilities [[spoiler: due to having been unable to save many people during the Final Test and later finding out that because he and the rest of Team Summer A were frozen almost two decades before the rest of the cast, his methods are now out of date.]] His methods do still work, though.
* MoodWhiplash: The pen-ultimate chapter of the ''Minor Heat'' arc features our group trying to escape the Fuji Ship before it launches its missisles and nuclear bomb over all of Japan, horrified that they were incapable of stopping the launch... and the last page switches to Hana, looking peacefully submerged in water.
** The next chapter, ''Applause'', does it the other way around. It features Hana, happily frolicking with piglets, being taken care of and "adopted" by their mother, [[ToiletHumor shitting into the ocean and laughing when little insects begin to eat it]] and Hana looking at the sun and thinking how she has decided to live in this world... and then we suddenly cut ''back'' to the intense atmosphere of the group still escaping the Fuji Ship.
* MummiesAtTheDinnerTable: [[spoiler: After Mitsuru dies, Aramaki sees Fubuki, who was previously attacked by a saber-tooth tiger, walk towards him [[UnexplainedRecovery fine except for an injury]]. A few chapters later, though, it's revealed that Fubuki ''did'' die when the tiger attacked and Aramaki pretended that a dog he had previously treated was his good friend. When the dog dies, Aramaki realizes what he had previously denied to believe.]]
* MusicForCourage: During the Ryugu Shelter arc, Maria's singing is what initially calmed down the agitated inhabitants, when they learned of the catastrophe that hit Earth. She continues to sing as means of encouraging and entertaining people for the duration of the arc. [[spoiler:Turns into a horrifyingly sad example, when it turns out that ''she'' was the carrier for Acari X and her singing brought people together, letting the parasites spread throughout the shelter.]]
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Over the course of the series, their actions have horrible consequences.
** Team Summer B, Ango and Ryo head into the Fuji ship, thinking it's another supply shelter as the other Fujis. Their presence turns on the ship's electricity again. As well as the countdown to [[KillEmAll launch missiles all over Japan]] [[NukeEm including a nuclear warhead]]. [[spoiler: They fortunately manage to get out and avoid the launch with the iron-eating bacteria resuming to eat up the ship.]]
** Hana, Fujiko and Chisa encounter and open an old ruin and realize it's a mushroom farm. Opening it resulted in the spores to be set free upon the forest they were inhabiting, destroying the entire eco-system that had been going on for who-knows-how-long, with shiitake now sprouting out of the ground, trees ''and animals''. [[spoiler: It also befalls several of Aramaki's dogs when they arrive, resulting in them sacrificing themselves.]]
** The scientists in the Sado shelter. They are investigating a new type of ant that seems to thrive on the bars that the scientists eat. Eventually, the ants break out... and seem to have grown very large by now.
* NoNameGiven: The crew of [[spoiler:the Fuji ship]] are ''at best'' known only by what their professions must have been back when they were still alive. Odds are, their real names are lost to time.
* ObliviousToLove: Arashi. Also, some of the Team Summer A members don't quite "get" love.
* OfficialCouple: [[StarCrossedLovers Hana and Arashi]], devoted to each other despite never quite being able to actually find each other. Also Kurumi and Ryuusei of Team Autumn.
* OneSteveLimit: Subverted when Hana reads that the man who hired Mark for the Ryugu Shelter is called "Takashi", just like her father. She says it's just a coincidence. [[spoiler: Played straight, as it turns out they ''are'' the same person.]]
* OppositesAttract: Tough-as-nails and stubborn Hana is dating the sweet, good-natured Arashi. [[WhatDoesSheSeeInHim It mostly made Ryo and Ango wonder why the two are dating]].
* ParentalAbandonment: The parents of the characters sold them to the government.
** Subverted with [[spoiler:Hana's]] parents at least. It's revealed that they sincerely regret their involvement in the 7 Seeds project but still believe that it's for the best. They also take consolation that her boyfriend's also there.
* ThePlague: [[spoiler: Acari X, a parasitoid that first befalls the animals and then humans, during the Ryugu Shelter arc.]]
* PleasePutSomeClothesOn: Fubuki says this to Mitsuru during the Team Winter chapters when they all use rain as a shower alternative.
* PosthumousCharacter: Everyone in the ApocalypticLog, naturally. (They get a whole arc.)
* PuppeteerParasite: [[spoiler: The mantis larvae that control Yanagi. The Acari X also seem to have tendencies in the same direction.]]
* PutOnABus: As the story progresses and the various team members end up getting separated, and the story rotates to focus on various characters, this happens to several characters. Generally this results in TheBusCameBack.
* RagnarokProofing: [[RuleOfCool Plant-animal hybrid]] [[EverythingsBetterWithDinosaurs raptors]] and [[BigCreepyCrawlies huge flesh-eating silverfish]] have had time to evolve, yet the Shinjuku skyline is still discernible despite being partially submerged in saltwater. Then there's the issue of the functioning boat and edible rice in the shelters...
** The shelter containing [[spoiler:Mark's corpse and journal]] is shown to still be somewhat intact with functioning electricity and even automated speakers. Although the reason it's that way is tied closely to the aforementioned ApocalypticLog.
** Played with in the case of the subway line leading towards the shelter. At first glance, it ''looks'' pristine. But years of neglect and saltwater intrusions had not only weakened the columns but also reduced the subway car's strength to the point that it crumples just by simply ''touching'' it.
** The Fuji Stations play this straight on purpose: they were deliberately designed to stay preserved indefinitely.
* RapeAsDrama: Ango tries to make Hana "pay with her body" since her father was a SinkOrSwimMentor. Fortunately, [[IceQueen Ayu of all people]] [[BigDamnHeroes steps in]].
* RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil: The fact that Ango tried to rape Hana is treated as a ''worse'' offense by the other teams than the fact that he didn't help her when she was stuck in a raging river.
* RecruitTeenagersWithAttitude: Again, Team Summer B. [[spoiler: Specifically engineered]] in Team Summer ''A''.
* RiddleForTheAges: In-universe, Sataka's manga ''Wonderful Q'' has the story of a character apparently looking for "Q" and what exactly it is. Sataka admits he has asked this question himself when he noticed that the Chinese language had a Q in it, wondering what it is doing there. In the sub-arc's last chapter, it's revealed that he finished the manga with the answer "What is 'Q'?" answered... although the reader is never shown the explicit answer.
* RotatingProtagonist: The Teams tend to be the focus entirely, but certain arcs do focus more on certain characters.
** ''Hail Of Corn'' revolves around Team Summer A, but there's a definite emphasis on Ango during the arc.
** The current ''Mountain/Ocean'' arc retotates repeatedly to each character, as they proceed to be separated and reunited.
* RuinsOfTheModernAge: Teams Summer B and Spring can't believe they're in Japan until they encounter these.
* SceneryGorn: The old ruins of the previous world are this in spades, with world-famous monuments and landmarks submerged or corroded to the point of crumbling apart upon touch.
** SceneryPorn: [[http://www.mangareader.net/7-seeds/137/24 The lower layer of Sado]] is a goregous forest-y area with something akin to its own eco-system and even birds are seen flying around.
* SeriouslyScruffy: Eventually all the characters, since personal hygiene is not a priority.
* [[TownWithADarkSecret Shelter With A Dark Secret]]: The "Ash" arc is about this. Especially since it's revealed that the whole [[spoiler:long-dead]] place is basically a Japanese version of [[VideoGame/FalloutNewVegas Vault 22]].
** The Fuji ship is this crossed with RoomFullOfCrazy. [[spoiler:It's revealed that just about everyone onboard went insane one way or another. Add in a veritable supply of weapons and ammo...]]
** Unintentional, but the [[spoiler: underground mushroom farm shelter]] caused a lot of ecological devastation after being opened.
* ShipTease: Given the fact that these guys are here to keep humanity alive, this was bound to come up. Some of the less expected ones include [[spoiler: [[RomeoAndJuliet Haru and Korui]], [[MayDecemberRomance Ayu and Aramaki]], and now Ango and Natsu]]
* ShowerOfAngst: Ango has one when he learns the truth what Dropping Out means [[spoiler: and realizing he found Nobara's friendship bracelet (and her hand) among animal blood and innards]].
* SinkOrSwimMentor: Team Summer A's teachers, [[TraumaCongaLine to their eventual horror]].
* SoBeautifulItsACurse: Ayu, aka Madonna, is harassed by other female classmates because of her beauty. She's less whiney about it than most female examples of this trope, but it does come up.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: Can be attributed to each Team at times, switching the focus around a lot. Hana seems to be a singular character example, with one mini-arc revolving solely on a disease she catches and needs to find a cure for, as well as her [[spoiler: supposed death]] before another, larger arc begins with her and follows her for a long while, before other characters join in and get some of the spotlight shone upon them.
* StarCrossedLovers: Hana and Arashi. They were dating before being frozen and are looking for each other in the hopes that both will still be alive. But events seem to conspire to keep them apart.
* TheStoic: Ryo and Nijiko, both of whom are calm and hardly show any emotions.
* SurvivalistStash: The Fuji Stations.
* SurvivorGuilt: The entire Team Summer A has this, though Ango, Koruri and Ayu are the ones shown with the biggest of it, [[spoiler: Ayu's more leaning towards guilt due to MurderByInaction]].
** Team Winter's Aramaki has it, too, though it's not immediately noticeable when you meet him later. He feels like ''he'' should've died instead of the others on his team because he finds himself useless and woefully unprepared for the world they were awoken in.
* TearsOfBlood: During the Ryugu Arc, [[spoiler: Acari X-sufferers died after the parasitoids ate their way [[EyeScream through their host's eyeballs]]]] leaving a trail of bloody tears behind.
* TemporalThemeNaming: All of the characters have names that mean things related to the season of their team.
* TemptingFate: Aramaki mentions regretting naming his first two dogs [[spoiler:after Fubuki and Mitsuru]] because he was afraid they'd die before him. [[spoiler: They're infected by the Shiitake spores not long after and choose to [[HeroicSacrifice stay behind]] in the forest fire with the other adult dogs in order to prevent the spores from spreading out further.]]
* TitleDrop: The project that the teams and their guides are part of is called the ''7 Seeds'' Project.
* ToiletHumor: Semimaru is freaking out because a dinosaur he pissed all over came back to life!
** The ''Applause'' chapter has Child!Hana eat something that her body doesn't tolerate and she goes to poop into the ocean... then, seeing that some insects are eating her feces, she goes poop some more because it amuses her.
* TooDumbToLive: Many of the Summer A candidates are incredibly stupid, especially considering all of the survival training they've had.
** Justified with several, who were just coasting and treating it like a game.
* TogetherInDeath: [[spoiler: Mayu and Hyo from the Team Summer A candidates]]
* TraumaCongaLine: In many ways, [[SerialEscalation the whole series]]. Having it start with EverybodysDeadDave and showing us what's left can do that. And then there's always Team Summer A's Final Test...
* TwentyMinutesIntoTheFuture: The time period just before the meteor strikes and when the majority of the Team Summer A arc is.
** [[spoiler: Subverted with the latter. By the time they were frozen, Hana had just been born, so they're hilariously outdated. [[BreakTheHaughty This isn't really taken well.]]]]
** The time frame that Team Spring ''thinks'' has passed since the impact upon meeting Aramaki. [[spoiler: When Hana realizes he is ''the'' Aramaki Takahiro that she and Arashi used to see on TV playing baseball, they jump to the conclusion that they were frozen, but the impact happened pretty soon after and Team Winter (including Aramaki) were awakened shortly after ''that''... and then 15 years have passed since.]] Subverted, [[MindScrew maybe]], since a proper time frame of impact to awakening has not been named yet.
* TwistedChristmas: [[spoiler:The very last day of the shelter was on December 24th, according to [[ApocalypticLog Mark's journal]].]]
* TyphoidMary: The scientists in the underground shelter theorize that one of these is responsible for the spread of [[spoiler: Acari X]]. [[spoiler: It's Maria.]]
* UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans: Including shipping unwitting civilians into a post-apocalyptic uncertain future, [[spoiler: culling the population]] to keep the underground hideouts alive, mentally scarring 17-year-olds as a final test... And then there's the matter of how we meet [[MeaningfulName Fall]]...
* WeHardlyKnewYe: [[spoiler: Nobara; also, Mutsuki and guide Sayuru of Team Winter.]]
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Basically everyone in charge of Summer A, but particularly Kaname and Takashi.
** The government response to the Impact in general is this. So long as some semblance of human civilization survives, the authorities would do ''anything''.
* [[WhatTheHellHero What the Hell, Authority?]]: A frequent theme, most often a response to the above.
* WhatTheHellHero: [[spoiler: Ango and Ryo]] are eventually called out on [[spoiler: the former trying to rape Hana and the latter trying to kill her and Haru.]] Yay, exile.
* [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes Why Did It Have To Be Be Bugs]]: Arashi and Semimaru hates bugs. And guess what! The first island their team finds is infested with giant carnivorous cockroaches and other insects!
* YouCantGoHomeAgain: The place where you were born might still be there, it just probably is in ruins and your entire family and all of your friends are dead.

* ButWhatAboutTheAstronauts: Aramaki speculates that some (possibly Americans) might have escaped to the Moon and that
their descendants might be spying on them.
* CelebritySurvivor: Two variants. First, a few of the team members were somewhat famous- Takahiro and Fubuki were both fairly well-known baseball players, for example. Second, [[spoiler: in the "Ash" arc, several entertainers, including IdolSinger Maria Miki, are included in the underground shelter, to keep the other people there calm and content.

* CryonicsFailure: What happens to three members

* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler:Arashi begins to feel that it is hopeless that he will ever reunite with Hana and tries to drown himself.

** When Ango reveals the anguish Team Summer A went through to be chosen, Arashi asks him a simple question that completely stumps him and Ryo.
--> ''Why didn't you just run away?''
* ArtisticLicenseBiology: From strange rash infections to mutant fungal spores and iron-eating bacteria, biological actions that would usually take weeks or even years to occur now spread within mere days or minutes.
* AxCrazy: Team Summer A becomes a little unhinged after the Final Test.
* BerserkButton
** Don't hurt Hana in front of Arashi, unless you want to be hurt.
** Do not make any comments about Ango's friends. Ango will attack you.
* BewareTheNiceOnes
** Arashi is a sensitive and sweet guy, but he almost killed a schoolmate that threatened to hurt his girlfriend.
** Chisa is demure and polite, but wishes to tear 'it' off when she hears that [[spoiler:Ango tried to rape Hana]].
* BigFriendlyDog: Aramaki's dogs and their puppies.
* BlackBlood: [[spoiler:Maria]]'s blood is black, making them realize they were the carrier of Acari X.
* BodyHorror: [[spoiler:Yanagi-san]] gets injected with insect eggs, which end up bursting out of his face and body.
* BreakTheCutie: This occurs to several characters.
* ButWhatAboutTheAstronauts: Aramaki speculates that there might be astronauts that have escaped the catastrophe on earth and their descendants are now living on the moon.
* CelebritySurvivor
** Takahiro Aramaki and Fubuki Saejima were fairly well-known baseball players, despite only being in highschool. The two of them recognize each other by name fairly quickly.
** The Ryugu Shelter arc has several entertainers -- including the famous idol Maria Miki -- in the underground shelter, recruited to help keep the other inhabitants calm and entertained.
* [[CelibateHero Celibate Heroes]]: Rather forced upon them. The Fuji shelters do not contain any contraceptives, as the team members are supposed to repopulate humanity. Team Autumn has made a strict ban on any kind of sex that may result in pregnancy and the other teams choose to remain celibate until things have settled.
* CharacterDevelopment: As the series goes on, many of the characters grow and develop into fairly competent teams.
* CrapsaccharineWorld: The Ryugu Shelter is an apocalyptic shelter disguised as a luxury resort.
* CrapsackWorld: The post-apocalyptic world is bad enough, but the world prior to the meteor's impact was not great.
* CryonicsFailure: Three members of Team Winter.
* CyanidePill
** Each of the team leaders was given a capsule with cyanide in it, to be used if the future turned out to be completely uninhabitable or the leader had to get rid of 'problematic' members.
** The Ryugu Shelter arc reveals that Takashi had the same type of pills as the leaders and to be used, if things deteriorated too badly in the shelter.
* DeadGuyJunior: Aramaki names two dogs after Fubuki and Mitsuru. He admits to regretting the decision later because he will 'lose them again' when they pre-decease him.
* DeathWorld: The post-apocalyptic world is filled with flora and fauna that want to kill you.
* DrivenToSuicide: Several minor characters.
* DueToTheDead: [[spoiler: Some characters take their time to bury their dead.
* TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt: Several meteorites have fallen onto earth, with its destruction of buildings leaving a thick cloud of dust behind that blocks out the sun for another ice age.
* EnsembleCast: Five teams with eight members, leading to at least a 40-people cast in the beginning. The number dwindled as the series progresses, but the focus remains on multiple people at once.
* ExposedToTheElements: Subverted. They all feel the elements very well. Arashi uses seaweed to keep warm and cover himself while floating in the ocean and Botan reprimands Ran for wearing skimpy clothing, which leaves her to be more vulnerable to injuries, too.
* EyeScream: The Acari X parasitoids feast off of their host's body and eat their way out through the eyeballs.
* EasternZodiac: Wood carvings of the eastern zodiac were left in locations that clued the Team Summer A candidates in on when the next part of the Final Test may begin.
* {{Fanservice}}: Quit a bit from both sides. Arashi and some of the other men tend to go diving or swimming shirtless, though some of the women show their goods, too.
* FlingALightIntoTheFuture: Deconstructed. The manga shows the effects this has on the people involved and what sacrifices had to be made to pull it off.
* FriendshipMoment
** Ryo reveals that his reason for trying to [[spoiler:kill Haru and Hana]] was because their presence made Ango emotionally unstable and he wanted to protect him.
** Natsu musters up her courage and apologizes to Matsuri over a remark that she thinks may have hurt her. Matsuri thanks her, realizing that she doesn't need to 'play a part' around Natsu.
** Semimaru asks Natsu if she did her best on her own, when she was separated from the others. She does and Semimaru praises her... [[LovingBully and then teases her about it]].
* GivingSomeoneThePointerFinger: Semimaru gives it to Arashi for referring to Semimaru's hometown as 'the place with all the eels'.
* GoOutWithASmile: Several people manage to do so.
* TheGreatestStoryNeverTold
** Had they never found Mark's journal, the tragic and bittersweet story of the Ryugu Shelter might have been lost forever. And they would never have found out why the shelter was more dangerous than they initially thought.
** In-Universe, the story of ''Wonderful Q'' ends up answering the series-long question of 'What is Q?'. The answer isn't shown to the reader and the story has likely been lost to time.
* HeroicBSOD: Half of the Team Summer A members have this look on their face upon being chosen.
* HighschoolSweethearts
** Hana's parents. Takashi and Miho dated during highschool and got married in college.
** Hana herself seems to have thought that she would end up this way with Arashi, imagining herself dying of old age with him by her side.
* HopeSpot: The Ryugu Shelter was revealed to be part of a Japan-wide network of other shelters and having a standing communication with each other. [[spoiler:Even though Ryugu ended up badly and the connection to other shelters was lost quickly.]] Odds are, there may be some people still living in some.
* HumanPopsicle: All of the characters were put into cryogenic sleep before the meteor hit.
* HumansAreBastards
** Incredibly drastic measures were taken to attempt to keep humanity alive. The shelters like Ryugu were the more mundane ideas, though the most drastic and disgusting measures [[spoiler:like the culling of the shelter inhabitants]] were meant to be absolute last-ditch efforts.
** The reasons for having students dropping out of the Team Summer A candidates were minor, at best. Young kids like Nobara, whose only issue was some bad eyesight, were made to drop out. [[spoiler:Which means that they were killed and turned into fertilizer.]] And the less said about the Final Test, the better.
** The modus operandi for 'recruiting' most of the ''7 Seeds'' members was to take the candidates and freeze them, without their consent and not knowing what happened, until they woke up in the post-apocalyptic world.
* IdiosyncraticEpisodeNaming
** The ''Hail of Corn'' arc depicting the choosing of Team Summer A are named after classical music pieces, which are mentioned to be played or sung during the chapters.
** The ''Ashes'' arc uses old movie and book titles like ''Literature/OnTheBeach'' and ''Literature/WutheringHeights''.
* InfantImmortality: Subverted. Aside from the apocalypse having killed almost everyone, the children in the Ryugu Shelter don't make it, either. And then there are all the candidates that didn't make it onto Team Summer A.
* IntimateHealing
** The ''Minor Heat'' arc has Ango and Arashi wrap up nude in an emergency blanket, due to being drenched and cold.
** The ''Ocean/Mountain'' arc has
Koruri do this with Haru, who is freezing from having been in cold water. They strip and Ango take wrap up in her jacket.
* ItSeemedLikeAGoodIdeaAtTheTime: The scientists of the Open Sado Project discovered a new ant species that thrived on eating the energy bars their shelter was stocked with. [[spoiler:The ants escaped, grew huge and killed most of the scientists. [[NiceJobBreakingItHero Good job]]!]]
* IWillFindYou: The reason why Hana and Arashi keep going is in hope of eventually finding the other.
* {{Jerkass}}: Most of the teachers of the Team Summer A candidates.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Semimaru and Ryo can be jerks, but they have a hidden, softer side.
* JustBeforeTheEnd: The flashbacks shown tend to occur some point before the meteor's impact on earth. Mark's journal tells the story as it begins a mere few days before the impact.
* KillEmAll
** The Final Test for the Team Summer A candidates meant to kill all until the last seven remain.
** The Fuji ship's missiles and nuclear warhead were part of a plan.
* KillerRabbit: Team Summer B encounters cute rodents. Half of them are carnivorous monsters that eat the other half, who are the meek prey.
* LookOnMyWorksYeMightyAndDespair: The theme behind the relics of modern civilization. Even the Ryugu Shelter was touted as a masterpiece of engineering and technology. By the
time the teams encounter it, it's barely functioning and the structure is hanging on by a thin thread.
* LoveConfession
** When Matsuri confesses her feelings to Ryo, he doesn't quite [[ObliviousToLove get]] what she means by 'liking' him and wanting to 'go out' with him. Though if she means having children with him, that will have to wait until things are less hectic.
** Natsu confesses her feelings to Arashi, who returns them, in her illusion. This makes Natsu realize that she loves the Arashi who is in love with Hana, [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy more than her feelings being requited]].
* ManEatingPlant: Natsu and Arashi run afoul of one early on, but get rescued in time.
* ManipulativeBastard: Most of the adults in the series are terrible people, with Team Summer A's teachers being the worst kind.
* TheMedic
** Team Spring has Fujiko, who was an aspiring doctor before the impact.
** Team Summer A has Ban, who was the top of the medical class. He's unhappy with his abilities, though. [[spoiler:Not only because he wasn't able to save a lot of people
during the Final Test to cover Mayu and Hyo's bodies with rocks.Test, but he also feels his methods are outdated because Team Summer A was frozen much earlier than the rest.]]
* EyeScream:
MoodWhiplash
**
The [[spoiler: Acari X]] parasitoids feast off their host's body as long as possible and finally eat their way out through the eyeballs.
* EasternZodiac: Wood carvings
penultimate chapter of the zodiac are used to give the Summer A candidates clues as to when the next part of the final test will happen.
The biggest example is [[spoiler: practically everyone in the Ryugu Shelter arc, special mention to [[HeroicSacrifice Takashi's wife Miho]], Mark and Maria]], but also several characters during
very intense ''Minor Heat'' arc features Team Summer A's Final Test, [[spoiler: like Mayu B and Hyo, as well as Shigeru]].
* TheGreatestStoryNeverTold:
** Had
some of Summer A to escape the characters never found [[spoiler:Mark's corpse Fuji ship, before it launches its missiles all over Japan, and journal]], the tragic, bittersweet story of the Ryugyu shelter would have horrified that they haven't been lost forever. And they would have likely been unaware of able to stop the reason ''why'' said shelter ended up that way.
** An in-universe example:
launch. The mangaka's story "Wonderful Q" was finished last page switches to a very peaceful Hana, submerged in the Ryugu Shelter water.
** The next chapter continues with Hana, being 'adopted' by a mother pig and her piglets, frolicking around and making peace
with the question "What is Q?" finally being answered, but idea of living in this new world. The last pages switch back to the answer is never shown to us. Likely, though, by the time the team stumbles over it, it's been lost forever.
previously intense Fuji ship.
* HeroicBSOD: About half of the members of NiceJobBreakingItHero
**
Team Summer A get this after they are selected. The other half just look stunned/angry/murderous.
* HighschoolSweethearts: Hana's parents, Takashi
B, Ango and Miho, dated during school and got married young while still in college.
** Hana may seem to have thought this might happen with her and Arashi, imagining her dying of old age next to Arashi, but then...
Ryo head into the plot happens...
* HopeSpot: The Ryugyu
Fuji ship, thinking that it's a supply shelter is revealed like the others. Their presence turns the ship's electricity back on, which includes the countdown to be part of launch missiles and a network of others scattered throughout nuclear warhead all over Japan. [[spoiler:But due [[spoiler:They manage to get out and the fact that most if not all were implied to have eventually been cut off from each other]], odds are that maybe one of them may still have people living there.
** The modus operandi for "recruiting" most of Hana, Fujiko and Chisa encounter an old ruin and open it up, realizing it's a mushroom farm. Opening it has lead to the 7 Seed Teams involve taking candidates against their will ''without ever knowing about it'' until they woke up
* IdiosyncraticEpisodeNaming: All the chapters in the Team Summer A arc have the titles of classical music pieces.
* IntimateHealing: Ango and Arashi, during the Minor Heat arc, wrap up nude in an Emergency Blanket due to
mushrooms' spores being drenched released onto the forest nearby and cold.
** Again, this time between Koruri and Haru, in
destroying the Ocean/Mountain Arc when Haru is freezing from having eco-system that had been in cold water. They both strip sustaining itself for a long time. [[spoiler:A forest fire occurs, which destroys the forest, the animals within and wrap up in her jacket.

* IWillFindYou: Hana and Arashi.
[[spoiler:Mark's tale in the Ryugyu arc in fact starts off ''a few days'' before the Impact happens.

* RapeAsDrama: Ango tries to make Hana "pay with her body" since her father was a SinkOrSwimMentor. Fortunately, [[IceQueen Ayu of all people]] [[BigDamnHeroes steps in]].
* RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil: The fact that Ango tried to attempted rape of Hana is treated as a ''worse'' much worse offense by the other teams than the fact that he [[spoiler:Ango]] didn't even try to help her when she was stuck in from being sucked into a raging river.
* RecruitTeenagersWithAttitude: Again, Team Summer B. [[spoiler: Specifically engineered]] in Team Summer ''A''.
