In the near future, scientists have disovered that a huge meteor is heading towards earth and its impact would wipe out almost all life. World leaders met and tested a number of countermeasures. The worst-case countermeasure to be created was the ''7 Seeds'' Project, where each country took young and healthy people and put them into a cryogenic sleep. They would be released once conditions on earth had become safe enough to live in.

In the near future, scientists discovered that a meteor was headed towards Earth and that if it hit it was expected to wipe out almost all life. World leaders met and tested a number of countermeasures. In the worst case scenario, if none of the countermeasures worked and the human race died out entirely, they created a final project, "7 Seeds". Each country took young and healthy people and put them in a cryogenic sleep: when conditions on Earth had become safe enough to live in again, they would be released.

In Japan, the 7 Seeds project was organized into five teams of seven people: Team Winter, Team Spring, Team Summer A, Team Summer B, and Team Fall. The story begins some unknown number of years in the future, when Team Summer B wakes up and learns that their entire world has been destroyed and that evolution has begun to repeat itself.

* BerserkButton: Do not try to hurt Hana in front of Arashi. He will hurt you.

The shelters that were left for them do not contain any kind of birth-control, so Team Autumn has made a ban on any kind of sex that could result in pregnancy and the other Teams overall decide that being celibate is better, until things have settled down decently enough. [[spoiler: Ryusei and Kurumi did not follow this rule, as she is revealed to be pregnant during her second appearance]]
* CharacterDevelopment: As time goes on, the characters grow and develop into fairly competent teams and more sides to several characters are shown.
* CrapsaccharineWorld: Ryugyu in the Ash arc is a large impact shelter disguised as a luxury resort.
* CrapsackWorld: While the post-impact world gives Australia [[EverythingIsTryingToKillYou a run for its money]], life in the times leading up to it is implied to be rather unpleasant.
* CryonicsFailure: What happens to three members of Team Winter.
* CyanidePill: All of the team leaders were given poison so they could kill themselves and the rest of the team if they awaken in situations that are unlivable.

* EyeScream: The [[spoiler: Acari X]] parasitoids feast off their host's body as long as possible and finally eat their way out through the eyeballs.
* EasternZodiac: Wood carvings of the zodiac are used to give the Summer A candidates clues as to when the next part of the final test will happen.
* {{Fanservice}}: Quite a bit for the readers, generally curtesy of Arashi and some other men by going topless when swimming or bathing, but the women show us their goods at times, too. Especially [[TheTease Botan]].
* FlingALightIntoTheFuture: Deconstructed, the manga going long ways to show both the effects this has on the people involved and the sort of sacrifices needed to pull this off.
* FriendshipMoment: Several throughout the series, though some seem to go into the ''extreme'' category...
** Ryo reveals that the reason he tried to [[spoiler: kill Haru and Hana]] was because their presence made Ango emotionally unstable and Ryo wanted to protect him from that.
** Natsu [[ShrinkingViolet musters up her courage]] and apologizes to Matsuri because of a short conversation they had the day earlier and Natsu feels she hurt Matsuri's feelings. Matsuri thanks Natsu for that and says she realizes that she doesn't have to somehow "play a part" around Natsu.
** Semimaru asking Natsu if she did her best on her own while she ended up separated from the rest. Natsu says she did and Semimaru praises her... [[LovingBully and then immediately teases her about it]].
* GivingSomeoneThePointerFinger: Semimaru to Arashi, after Arashi referred to Semimaru's hometown as "the place with all the eels."
* GoOutWithASmile: Several people over the course of the series. The biggest example is [[spoiler: practically everyone in the Ryugu Shelter arc, special mention to [[HeroicSacrifice Takashi's wife Miho]], Mark and Maria]], but also several characters during Team Summer A's Final Test, [[spoiler: like Mayu and Hyo, as well as Shigeru]].
* TheGreatestStoryNeverTold:
** Had the characters never found [[spoiler:Mark's corpse and journal]], the tragic, bittersweet story of the Ryugyu shelter would have been lost forever. And they would have likely been unaware of the reason ''why'' said shelter ended up that way.
** An in-universe example: The mangaka's story "Wonderful Q" was finished in the Ryugu Shelter with the question "What is Q?" finally being answered, but the answer is never shown to us. Likely, though, by the time the team stumbles over it, it's been lost forever.
* HeroicBSOD: About half of the members of Team Summer A get this after they are selected. The other half just look stunned/angry/murderous.
* HighschoolSweethearts: Hana's parents, Takashi and Miho, dated during school and got married young while still in college.
** Hana may seem to have thought this might happen with her and Arashi, imagining her dying of old age next to Arashi, but then... the plot happens...
* HopeSpot: The Ryugyu shelter is revealed to be part of a network of others scattered throughout Japan. [[spoiler:But due to the fact that most if not all were implied to have eventually been cut off from each other]], odds are that maybe one of them may still have people living there.
* HumanPopsicle: All of the characters were cryonically frozen before the meteor hit.
* HumansAreBastards: Holy high-flying Hell, what ''wasn't'' done in an attempt to keep humanity alive?
** To be fair, some of the more desperate and abhorrent acts were meant to be last-ditch emergency measures in the event something went wrong in the shelters. [[spoiler: Like in Mark's.]] That said, there really isn't much excuse for [[spoiler: killing the failed Summer A candidates... especially the ones like Nobara, who was a kid and died for ''having poor eyesight''.]]
** The modus operandi for "recruiting" most of the 7 Seed Teams involve taking candidates against their will ''without ever knowing about it'' until they woke up
* IdiosyncraticEpisodeNaming: All the chapters in the Team Summer A arc have the titles of classical music pieces.
** Those of the Ash arc are based on old movie and book titles such as ''Literature/OnTheBeach'' and ''Literature/WutheringHeights.''
* InfantImmortality: Horribly subverted. Aside from TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt obviously killing off practically everyone, the children in the Ryugu Shelter also don't make it. And the less we say about the Team Summer A candidates, the better...
* IntimateHealing: Ango and Arashi, during the Minor Heat arc, wrap up nude in an Emergency Blanket due to being drenched and cold.
** Again, this time between Koruri and Haru, in the Ocean/Mountain Arc when Haru is freezing from having been in cold water. They both strip and wrap up in her jacket.
* ItSeemedLikeAGoodIdeaAtTheTime: The scientist of the Open Sado Project who discovered a new species of ants that thrived on the energy bars the shelter was stocked with. [[spoiler: Needless to say, they escaped, grew huge and apparently killed all the scientists. [[NiceJobBreakingItHero Nice job, Scientist]]!]]
* IWillFindYou: Hana and Arashi.
* JerkAss: Most of the teachers of the Summer A candidates, but especially Unami.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Semimaru and Ryou can seem incredibly jerky but they have hidden soft sides.
* JustBeforeTheEnd: The flashbacks largely take place at some point or another before the Impact actually occurs. [[spoiler:Mark's tale in the Ryugyu arc in fact starts off ''a few days'' before the Impact happens.]]
* KillEmAll: [[spoiler: All Team Summer A candidates are killed except the top seven.]]
** The plan behind the [[spoiler: Fuji Ship's]] missles and nuclear bomb.
* KillerRabbit: Team Summer B encounters some cute, fuzzy rodents. Then it turns out that half of the rabbits are carnivorous monsters that try to eat them and the other half are prey. Oddly enough, it's one of the few serious examples of this trope.
* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: With five Teams of eight members, you already have 40 characters. Add the important characters who made the 7 Seeds Project a reality, as well as characters that pop up later and are revealed to be important, you easily double that number. And just mentioning the important ''candidates'' for Team Summer A, you can reach 100 characters. [[AnyoneCanDie Even if some of the Team members die]].
* LookOnMyWorksYeMightyAndDespair: Seems to be the predominant theme regarding the relics of human civilization. The Ryugyu shelter in the "Ash" arc in particular was touted as a marvel of engineering and technology. By the time the Teams find the complex, it's just barely functioning, with the structure's integrity hanging by a thread. [[spoiler:And that's not getting to what happened with the people...]]
* LoveConfession: Played with. When Matsuri confesses her feelings to Ryo, he [[ObliviousToLove doesn't quite understand her words of "liking" him, wanting to "go out" with him]] and similar, unless she means having children with him, which he rejects (for now) due to things being hectic.
** Same chapter, Natsu confesses her feelings to Arashi, who returns them... in an illusion. Arashi returning her feelings make Natsu also realize that she loves the Arashi who is in love with Hana [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy more than actually being loved by him]].
* ManEatingPlant: Natsu and Arashi run afoul of these early on, but are rescued.
* ManipulativeBastard: Pretty much every adult in this series is a terrible person, but the teachers are the school are the worst.
** The exception or subversion seemed to have been [[spoiler:Mark and the others in his shelter]]. Too bad they're long dead. Botan seems to be the only nice adult still alive.
* TheMedic: Two of them- aspiring doctor Fujiko of Team Spring, and Ban of Team Summer A, who is top in the medical classes. Although the latter is unhappy with his abilities [[spoiler: due to having been unable to save many people during the Final Test and later finding out that because he and the rest of Team Summer A were frozen almost two decades before the rest of the cast, his methods are now out of date.]] His methods do still work, though.
* MoodWhiplash: The pen-ultimate chapter of the ''Minor Heat'' arc features our group trying to escape the Fuji Ship before it launches its missisles and nuclear bomb over all of Japan, horrified that they were incapable of stopping the launch... and the last page switches to Hana, looking peacefully submerged in water.
** The next chapter, ''Applause'', does it the other way around. It features Hana, happily frolicking with piglets, being taken care of and "adopted" by their mother, [[ToiletHumor shitting into the ocean and laughing when little insects begin to eat it]] and Hana looking at the sun and thinking how she has decided to live in this world... and then we suddenly cut ''back'' to the intense atmosphere of the group still escaping the Fuji Ship.
* MummiesAtTheDinnerTable: [[spoiler: After Mitsuru dies, Aramaki sees Fubuki, who was previously attacked by a saber-tooth tiger, walk towards him [[UnexplainedRecovery fine except for an injury]]. A few chapters later, though, it's revealed that Fubuki ''did'' die when the tiger attacked and Aramaki pretended that a dog he had previously treated was his good friend. When the dog dies, Aramaki realizes what he had previously denied to believe.]]
* MusicForCourage: During the Ryugu Shelter arc, Maria's singing is what initially calmed down the agitated inhabitants, when they learned of the catastrophe that hit Earth. She continues to sing as means of encouraging and entertaining people for the duration of the arc. [[spoiler:Turns into a horrifyingly sad example, when it turns out that ''she'' was the carrier for Acari X and her singing brought people together, letting the parasites spread throughout the shelter.]]
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Over the course of the series, their actions have horrible consequences.
** Team Summer B, Ango and Ryo head into the Fuji ship, thinking it's another supply shelter as the other Fujis. Their presence turns on the ship's electricity again. As well as the countdown to [[KillEmAll launch missiles all over Japan]] [[NukeEm including a nuclear warhead]]. [[spoiler: They fortunately manage to get out and avoid the launch with the iron-eating bacteria resuming to eat up the ship.]]
** Hana, Fujiko and Chisa encounter and open an old ruin and realize it's a mushroom farm. Opening it resulted in the spores to be set free upon the forest they were inhabiting, destroying the entire eco-system that had been going on for who-knows-how-long, with shiitake now sprouting out of the ground, trees ''and animals''. [[spoiler: It also befalls several of Aramaki's dogs when they arrive, resulting in them sacrificing themselves.]]
** The scientists in the Sado shelter. They are investigating a new type of ant that seems to thrive on the bars that the scientists eat. Eventually, the ants break out... and seem to have grown very large by now.
* NoNameGiven: The crew of [[spoiler:the Fuji ship]] are ''at best'' known only by what their professions must have been back when they were still alive. Odds are, their real names are lost to time.
* ObliviousToLove: Arashi. Also, some of the Team Summer A members don't quite "get" love.
* OfficialCouple: [[StarCrossedLovers Hana and Arashi]], devoted to each other despite never quite being able to actually find each other. Also Kurumi and Ryuusei of Team Autumn.
* OneSteveLimit: Subverted when Hana reads that the man who hired Mark for the Ryugu Shelter is called "Takashi", just like her father. She says it's just a coincidence. [[spoiler: Played straight, as it turns out they ''are'' the same person.]]
* OppositesAttract: Tough-as-nails and stubborn Hana is dating the sweet, good-natured Arashi. [[WhatDoesSheSeeInHim It mostly made Ryo and Ango wonder why the two are dating]].
* ParentalAbandonment: The parents of the characters sold them to the government.
** Subverted with [[spoiler:Hana's]] parents at least. It's revealed that they sincerely regret their involvement in the 7 Seeds project but still believe that it's for the best. They also take consolation that her boyfriend's also there.
* ThePlague: [[spoiler: Acari X, a parasitoid that first befalls the animals and then humans, during the Ryugu Shelter arc.]]
* PleasePutSomeClothesOn: Fubuki says this to Mitsuru during the Team Winter chapters when they all use rain as a shower alternative.
* PosthumousCharacter: Everyone in the ApocalypticLog, naturally. (They get a whole arc.)
* PuppeteerParasite: [[spoiler: The mantis larvae that control Yanagi. The Acari X also seem to have tendencies in the same direction.]]
* PutOnABus: As the story progresses and the various team members end up getting separated, and the story rotates to focus on various characters, this happens to several characters. Generally this results in TheBusCameBack.
* RagnarokProofing: [[RuleOfCool Plant-animal hybrid]] [[EverythingsBetterWithDinosaurs raptors]] and [[BigCreepyCrawlies huge flesh-eating silverfish]] have had time to evolve, yet the Shinjuku skyline is still discernible despite being partially submerged in saltwater. Then there's the issue of the functioning boat and edible rice in the shelters...
** The shelter containing [[spoiler:Mark's corpse and journal]] is shown to still be somewhat intact with functioning electricity and even automated speakers. Although the reason it's that way is tied closely to the aforementioned ApocalypticLog.
** Played with in the case of the subway line leading towards the shelter. At first glance, it ''looks'' pristine. But years of neglect and saltwater intrusions had not only weakened the columns but also reduced the subway car's strength to the point that it crumples just by simply ''touching'' it.
** The Fuji Stations play this straight on purpose: they were deliberately designed to stay preserved indefinitely.
* RapeAsDrama: Ango tries to make Hana "pay with her body" since her father was a SinkOrSwimMentor. Fortunately, [[IceQueen Ayu of all people]] [[BigDamnHeroes steps in]].
* RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil: The fact that Ango tried to rape Hana is treated as a ''worse'' offense by the other teams than the fact that he didn't help her when she was stuck in a raging river.
* RecruitTeenagersWithAttitude: Again, Team Summer B. [[spoiler: Specifically engineered]] in Team Summer ''A''.
* RiddleForTheAges: In-universe, Sataka's manga ''Wonderful Q'' has the story of a character apparently looking for "Q" and what exactly it is. Sataka admits he has asked this question himself when he noticed that the Chinese language had a Q in it, wondering what it is doing there. In the sub-arc's last chapter, it's revealed that he finished the manga with the answer "What is 'Q'?" answered... although the reader is never shown the explicit answer.
* RotatingProtagonist: The Teams tend to be the focus entirely, but certain arcs do focus more on certain characters.
** ''Hail Of Corn'' revolves around Team Summer A, but there's a definite emphasis on Ango during the arc.
** The current ''Mountain/Ocean'' arc retotates repeatedly to each character, as they proceed to be separated and reunited.
* RuinsOfTheModernAge: Teams Summer B and Spring can't believe they're in Japan until they encounter these.
* SceneryGorn: The old ruins of the previous world are this in spades, with world-famous monuments and landmarks submerged or corroded to the point of crumbling apart upon touch.
** SceneryPorn: [[http://www.mangareader.net/7-seeds/137/24 The lower layer of Sado]] is a goregous forest-y area with something akin to its own eco-system and even birds are seen flying around.
* SeriouslyScruffy: Eventually all the characters, since personal hygiene is not a priority.
* [[TownWithADarkSecret Shelter With A Dark Secret]]: The "Ash" arc is about this. Especially since it's revealed that the whole [[spoiler:long-dead]] place is basically a Japanese version of [[VideoGame/FalloutNewVegas Vault 22]].

Hana seems to be a singular character example, with one mini-arc revolving solely on a disease she catches and needs to find a cure for, as well as her [[spoiler: supposed death]] before another, larger arc begins with her and follows her for a long while, before other characters join in and get some of the spotlight shone upon them.
* StarCrossedLovers: Hana and Arashi. They were dating before being frozen and are looking for each other in the hopes that both will still be alive. But events seem to conspire to keep them apart.

The manga wrapped up in 2017, with 33 volumes to its name.

* TheGreatestStoryNeverTold: Had the characters never found [[spoiler:Mark's corpse and journal]], the tragic, bittersweet story of the Ryugyu shelter would have been lost forever. And they would have likely been unaware of the reason ''why'' said shelter ended up that way.
** An in-universe example: The mangaka's story "Wonderful Q" was finished in the Ryugu Shelter with the question "What is Q?" finally being answered, but the answer is never shown to us. Likely, though, by the time the team stumbles over it, it's been LostForever.

* PutOnABus: As the story progresses and the various team members end up getting separated, and the story rotating to focus on various characters, this happens to several characters.

In the near future, scientists discovered that a meteor was headed towards earth and that if it hit it was expected to wipe out almost all life. World leaders met and tested a number of countermeasures. In the worst case scenario, if none of the countermeasures worked and the human race died out entirely, they created a final project, "7 Seeds". Each country took young and healthy people and put them in a cryogenic sleep: when conditions on earth had become safe enough to live in again, they would be released.

* AfterTheEnd: The majority of the story takes place after a meteorite has destroyed most life on Earth and evolution has begun to repeat itself.

* MusicForCourage: During the Ryugu Shelter arc, Maria's singing is what initially calmed down the agitated inhabitants, when they learned of the catastrophe that hit earth. She continues to sing as means of encouraging and entertaining people for the duration of the arc. [[spoiler:Turns into a horrifyingly sad example, when it turns out that ''she'' was the carrier for Acari X and her singing brought people together, letting the parasites spread throughout the shelter.]]
