* ChildhoodMarriagePromise: The foundation of the series, alongside ArrangedMarriage -- with the exception of [[AccidentalMarriage Shampoo]], all of Ranma's engagements were arranged when he was a kid.
* ChildMarriageVeto: Genma and Mr. Tendo arranged for Ranma and Akane to marry. The kids swear they won't because they hate each other, but anyone who's seen the series knows it's more akin to AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther.

* AntiHero: Soun, Konatsu, and [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation if you feel charitable]] Kuno, are type I; Hinako is a type II; Ryoga is a type III; Ranma and Akane are type II-III; Kumon Ryu is a type IV. Pantyhose Taro [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation may be]] a type V. Nobody else has demonstrated any heroic aspirations.

*** In one of Akane's dreams, a painting on the paper wall is clearly Sesshomaru's wolf form. In another scene, Akane dreams that she's in a losing battle and you can clearly see Kagome, Inu Yasha, Shippo and Miroku as her fallen comrades. Later in the same dream, we see Kodachi with facial markings similar to those seen on Sesshomaru, his mother and other full blooded dog demons.

* LovePotion: Not actual potions as such, but otherwise a common feature. Between the anime and manga, we've seen, among other things, a literal TogetherUmbrella and RedStringOfFate, mushrooms that become a love potion when stewed, bracelet "jewels" that are taken as love potion pills, "compatibility testing" sakura-mochi, a box of aphrodisiac-soaked band-aids, and a "heart fishing pole". Thanks to his UnwantedHarem, and [[ChaoticNeutral the general lack of scruples]] on the parts of... well... ''everyone''... Ranma Saotome tends to be the one who gets whammied with these the most.

* FirstKiss: Ranma and Shampoo, much to [[GreenEyedMonster Akane]][[ClingyJealousGirl Tendo's]] ire.

* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: There exists PlayedForlaughs and at least one PlayedForDrama versions.

* GodNeverSaidThat: Several of the most common fanons, most notably the purpose behind the trip to Shampoo's village and doubt that the Nanniichuan can cure the Nyanniichuan (or that anything can cure a Jusenkyo curse), are often falsely attributed to RumikoTakahashi.

* ADayInTheLimeLight: [[TheVamp Nabiki's]] "Ten Yen Bet" arc. It allows her to have her own set of wacky adventures, and "[[SnarkBait love interest]]," with Ranma and Akane as the [[CombatCommentator background commentators]]. Her "New Fiancée" and "Destroyed Concert Ticket" stories also qualify.

* ArrangedMarriage: The driving force of the series. Three times in the original manga (the Tendo promise, Ukyo, and Picolet Chardin,) plus an extra two time in the anime, once to serve as the justification for a {{Villain of the Week}}'s {{Martial Arts and Crafts}} challenge and the second time as a gag at the end of the episode.

* BoobsOfSteel: Played straight with Shampoo and Female-Ranma, who have generous busts and are highly skilled martial artists, as well as Miss Hinako who is one of the most powerful characters in the series since she drains power from her opponents. Possibly subverted with Ukyo, who is one of the flattest girls, but is shown to still be a highly skilled martial artist.
** Although Ukyo's apparent flatness could also be attributed more to her crossdressing habits. She uses bandages to bind up her chest instead of a bra both in and out of her male school uniform. As shown in several sequences, when her breasts are not bound, she actually has a substantial bustline.

** And again with Ryoga, most notably for defending a {{Brought Down to Normal}} Ranma from the rest of the males on the [[FanNickname Nerima Wrecking Crew]].

* DoubleStandard: Astoundingly so. When Ranma's female suitors go after him, they're pests (apart from Ukyo). However, when male suitors go after him (being in girl form, of course), s/he gets very annoyed and usually pummels them. One notable example by knocking a person out by striking him over 500 times, after he kissed his female form. This has more to do with the fact that he's a man and would be ostracized for hitting girls.
** No double standard at work, since ''Ranma isn't a girl.'' It has more to do with Ranma being a man and ''not wanting other men to hit on him'' (whereas he has been shown to get a confidence boost from Ukyo or Shampoo). Especially since these one-shot men are just as insistent as the regular-character female suitors. Also, Ranma never pummels anyone until ''they'' start acting like a pervert towards his female side -- when the girls act perversely towards his male half (Shampoo glomping him in the bath, Kodachi drugging him to kiss him) he runs away because ''he'', personally, doesn't like to hit girls, not because of a manga-wide DoubleStandard or fear of being ostracized.
** It's okay for a girl to see a guy nude but not for a guy to see a girl nude.
** Akane is notorious for getting angry when Ranma both allows himself to be taken on a date and when his other would-be fiancees get flirty with him (and sometimes even when Kuno begins his usual harrassment of Ranma's female form); even when she was the one that told him to do so (Kodachi and Panda ghost date). She has also, of her own free will, gone out with Ryoga on several occasions or otherwise deliberately acted in a romantic/overly friendly fashion towards him (including Ukyo's second story, the Tunnel of Lost Love, and the Waterproof Soap story) -- at least once with the explicit intention of making Ranma jealous.

* {{Fruit of the Loon}}: The loon is Principal Kuno, the fruit is pineapples. Any questions?

* NightmareFace: Ranma's face during his [[{{AndIMustScream}} Cat Fist]] that appears at 16:18 in episode 23. It just looks creepy.

* {{Overshadowed by Awesome}}: In the beginning, Akane and the Kuno siblings were hot stuff, already capable of superhuman feats. Then Ranma Saotome rolled into town, and Akane became a definite second-stringer, due to being completely unable to touch Ranma unless he let her. Kuno and his sister were still a credible threat... but then [[TheRival Ryoga Hibiki]] arrived... and then [[HotAmazon Shampoo]] showed up... and soon the original "best martial artists in Nerima" were at the bottom of the totem pole.

* WeirdnessCensor: Both Tatewaki and Kodachi Kuno are oblivious to the fact that male and female Ranma are the same person... despite the fact that's he's transformed in front of them! Same goes to Akane for being completely oblivious to Ryoga and P-chan being the same being despite the NUMEROUS obvious clues, some even dropped by Ranma (Mark of a God and Tunnel of Lost Love being prime examples).

** The cooking part seems more of an incentive since Akane can't cook worth crap.

* WeirdnessCensor: Both Tatewaki and Kodachi Kuno are oblivious to the fact that male and female Ranma are the same person... despite the fact that's he's transformed in front of them! Same goes to Akane for being completely oblivious to Ryoga and P-chan being the same being despite the NUMEROUS obvious clues, some even dropped by Ranma (Mark of a God and Tunnel of Lost Love being prime examples). At least the Kuno siblings have the excuse of not knowing a thing about Jusenkyo, so what's hers?
* WelcomeTitles

* {{Hypocrite}}: SO MANY. Where to even begin?
** Genma always harps on about honor to Ranma, but is always quick to try and dodge responsibilities (or even dump them on Ranma because he doesn't want to deal with them). Examples include the numerous "honor deals" he made with other families from selling Ranma off for food, dumping him off to Happosai, or try to shift blame onto Ranma (Ukyo cart incident).
** Kuno constantly brags about being an "honorable samurai", but this doesn't stop him from using whatever means necessary to try and beat Ranma, who constantly wipes the floor with him. One time, when Sasuke discovers Ranma's phobia and means to tell Kuno, Kuno rants about how it insults him that exploiting one's weak spot would sully his name, then seconds later, he demands Sasuke to tell him what Ranma's weakness is since there is no harm in him knowing.
** Ryoga rants on and on about how Ranma "has no honor" when it comes to fighting (referring to saying that Ranma had supposedly run off from their fight when in truth Ryoga couldn't find the damn lot BEHIND HIS OWN HOUSE). Also, Ryoga exploits Ranma's honor promise to him to not expose his curse to Akane to cause him headaches. One of them, he sells Ranma out to make himself look like the good guy in Akane's eyes during the Japanese Nannichuan incident.
** Akane always gripes about being a martial artist, but she hardly has the discipline to control her temper which doesn't suit a martial artist. When Nodoka came to visit after Kasumi fell ill, Akane criticizes Ranma-chan about that knife-handling doesn't make a chef, making tasteful food does, despite the fact [[LethalChef she herself]] [[CordonBleughChef can't cook anything edible to save her own life]]. In the 2nd movie, she assures Ukyo that Ranma and the others will come to rescue them. When Ukyo gushes about how Ranma will rescue them, Akane mutters that he's not just coming for Ukyo, then a second later, Akane thinks to herself that Ranma better come rescue ''her''.

** Soun also falls into this category, harping about honor, mainly to get the schools joined, but disregards other honor promises that hold more water.

** Ryoga rants on and on about how Ranma "has no honor" when it comes to fighting (referring to saying that Ranma had supposedly run off from their fight when in truth Ryoga couldn't find the damn lot BEHIND HIS OWN HOUSE). Never mind the fact that Ryoga uses weapons against Ranma when he fights unarmed, not to mention that he once tried to fight Ranma while ''he was still asleep''. Also, Ryoga exploits Ranma's honor promise to him to not expose his curse to Akane to cause him headaches. One of them, he sells Ranma out to make himself look like the good guy in Akane's eyes during the Japanese Nannichuan incident.

* FeminineWomenCanCook: Kasumi's defining trait and a source of major angst for Akane; this is also Ukyo's primary advantage over Akane in the fiancée sweepstakes, and one she lampshades constantly.

* RealMenWearPink: Ranma Saotome is skilled enough at cooking that his [[SupremeChef mother]] is impressed, at least passably skilled at sewing, good at tea ceremony and gymnastics, and seems to take pride in his ability to [[TheTease wind guys up by acting cute]] when [[GenderBender in girl form]].

* ShipSinking: Most of the teased ships are ruthlessly sunk right in the harbor before they can truly sail.

* OneHourWorkWeek: Soun Tendo's seat on the neighborhood council seems to give him an inordinate amount of free time (enough for a few training trips and playing Shogi all day with Genma), yet yields enough cash to pay the taxes and bills on his BigFancyHouse and attached dojo, plus cost of Martial Artist induced repairs, support his daughters, and still fit in family holidays to the seaside or mountains. He does complain about the bills, but it's only been twice in the entire anime and manga that they've ever been a problem. Also, the Tendo Dojo doesn't appear to have any actual students.

* SpellMyNameWithAnS: "Tendō" vs. "Tendou" vs "Tendo". Repeat for any name with an "oh" sound in their name. FanFic is split on the latter two, with both seeing a large amount of usage in stories.
** It doesn't help that the video games and certain official materials with romanized names take it one step further and spell it "Kunoh."

* SurrogateSoliloquy: Subverted -- Akane talks to P-Chan, who's actually Ryoga.

** Inverted with Tatewake Kuno, who, upon his introduction, demonstrated enough martial prowess to slip through Ranma's guard and mark his neck and was portrayed as a possible serious rival, only to devolve into a gag character in subsequent appearances, displaying next to none of the ability he originally showed. Of course, he was arguably never badass to begin with.

* ValleyGirl: Mariko, ''like totally''. Subverted in that she appears to be [[YourMileageMayVary the strongest young female fighter in the series]]. Or at least she's the only one who can actually claim to have defeated Ranma, [[http://www.anymanga.com/ranma/021/011/006/ if mostly]], [[http://www.anymanga.com/ranma/022/001/008/ or entirely]], through surprise.

** To point out how insane Ranma got, he deliberately triggered his curse for him and told Ryoga she'd [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy gladly let him kill her if it would make him happy.]] Oh, and he also tried to MurderTheHypotenuse with Akane, which finally prompted Ryoga to step through his fears and doubt to defeat Ranma cleanly, for perhaps the only time in the manga. Notable because Ranma never got his win back from that.

* ArthurDent: Nabiki

* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: Despite all the fanservice and sex jokes, the series is very much considered {{shonen}}.

* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Happens to Male Ranma when his female half is duplicated (though not split from him) and it seduces him in one anime episode. [[{{YMMV}} Possibly]] happens to Shampoo when Kiima catches her in an Imprinting Egg.
** It's also debatable whether the Oni does this to Ryoga, Kasumi and Kuno as, although the Oni does [[GrandTheftMe possess their body]], the victim also seems to still be in control of his or her own thoughts, given that Kasumi does not do evil deeds constantly while possessed and Genma doesn't even notice when the Oni has been exorcised from him and continues to scrawl insulting graffiti on a wall.

On September 26, 2011, a two-hour live-action special [[http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2011-09-26/ranma-manga-gets-live-action-special-with-yui-aragaki was announced]] to run on an (as of yet) unspecified Friday of December 2011 on the Japanese network NTV. Consisting of an original story by Yoshihiro Izumi, it will star Kenta Kaku and Natsuna Watanabe as male and female Ranma, respectively, and Yui Aragaki as Akane. Reactions so far [[BrokenBase have]] [[AndTheFandomRejoiced been]] [[RuinedFOREVER mixed]]. The official NTV site for this live-action special is [[http://www.ntv.co.jp/ranma/ here]].

* SobbinWomen: Once to female Ranma [[RescueRomance in the manga]], once to [[BecauseDestinySaysSo Akane in the first movie]], and ''every female but [[{{Squick}} Cologne]]'' in the [[BeachEpisode second movie]].
** Given all the "female counterpart" rescues in that story (inverted when Kuno is too incompetent, and Nabiki rescues him instead), it would have been particularly funny to have seen one for Happosai and Cologne.
** Female Ranma was also kidnapped for this purpose, and very nearly bewitched with a LovePotion in the ''Toraware no Hanayome'' [[TurboGrafxSixteen PC Engine]] video game. Akane had to rescue her from being married to a [[spoiler: bear]] prince.
