* ABirthdayNotABreak: The first chapter alone brings us what Kiritaka regularly goes through from his bullies torments, from getting kicked hard in the stomach since they stuck a target on his shirt, to force-feeding him with his mother’s bento but with cockroaches mixed in. When Kiritaka comes home, his mother greets him with a cake and wishes him a happy 14th birthday. Later that night, the bullies text Kiritaka with an edited video of his mother in a sex video and demand they all meet up somewhere. The bullies blackmail Kiritaka into jumping off a cliff or else the video gets put online. He survived the fall, [[LookBothWays but not the truck]].

* {{Sadist}}: Okaya makes most bullies look like saints. He goes out of his way to destroy Kiritaka's lunch, then force-feeds it to him when cockroaches begin to eat it, fully expecting his stomach to become infested with cockroach eggs. He later casually dismisses the possibility of Kiritaka breaking his legs, and becomes disappointed that he can't torture him anymore now that he's dead. While the rest of Kiritaka's bullies also qualify, Kiritaka acknowledges that they are just fanatics following Okaya's lead.

** During the first chapter, Shikimi is shown cheering as Okaya forcefully feeds Kiritaka cockroaches while recording it on her phone. [[spoiler:Her ultimate fate is being EatenAlive by [[CreepyCrawlyTorture cockroaches and centipedes as they go inside her mouth, her eyes, her nose]] and [[OrificeInvasion every other orifice available]].]]

* TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior: Okaya and his fellow bullies entertain themselves by attempting to strangle a student to see how long he lasts before begging for mercy, feeding Kiritaka cockroaches and blackmailing him with an edited sex video of his mother in order to make him jump off a cliff, not caring one bit if he breaks his legs. And they are still in ''middle school!''

* DatingServiceDisaster: Of the "Romance Scammer" variety. Shikimi likes to HoneyTrap unsuspecting single men into Love Hotels using a false profile on dating apps. She then has her helper bust in, reveal her true age and extort her victims out of exuberant amounts of money.

** After Maria humiliates her by covering for Kinugawa and calling her pitiful, Shikimi asks her helper to "teach her a lesson" in exchange for performing another HoneyTrap job.

** Played with while Shikimi's helper is in the middle of carrying out his assault on Maria. [[spoiler:He assumes Maria is trying to change the subject or stall for time when she mentions [[MetaphoricallyTrue they'd catch a cold out in the rain]], only to immediately see himself being put into a French kiss by Maria [[ShutUpKiss while he tries to call her out on it]]. [[SexFaceTurn Now putty in her hands]], Maria completes the thought by saying they should head to a recently foreclosed love hotel, where he sells Shikimi out]].

** Maria finds herself pursued by Shikimi's "[[HoneyTrap business]]" partner, who [[BatterUp knocks her down with a baseball bat]] after she [[StaticStunGun tasers]] the two goons accompanying him.

* HeKnowsTooMuch: Because she miscalculated [[EvilIsPetty how petty and impatient Shikimi was]], Maria is forced to improvise and [[SexFaceTurn seduce Iijima]] when [[DisproportionateRetribution he is sent to beat her up for taunting Shikimi]]. Maria quickly understands that Iijima could easily give her name and face to the police once Shikimi's death is investigated, and decides to kill him to prevent that. Ultimately she can't bring herself to do it after seeing an illusion of Kiritaka remind her that Iijima is not guilty for his death, and [[EveryoneHasStandards Maria agrees that killing him would be excessive]]; instead, she decides to silence him by other means, but finds that Iijima has disappeared after Shikimi's death. Maria has to race to find him before the police or Okaya's gang can find him first.

* VengeanceFeelsEmpty: An interesting example where the perpetrator appears to feel already that vengeance is empty, but continues anyway. Mari Nagare was once a happily married woman with a loving relationship with her son, Kiritaka Nagare. Unfortunately, her son died, and the investigation told her and her husband that they believed he was DrivenToSuicide by AbusiveParents. But when Mari Nagare read her son's diary, she learned the truth that a [[GangOfBullies group of bullies]] inhumanely [[BullyBritality tortured Kiritaka]], and he died in a prank gone wrong. Mari Nagare snapped and dedicated her life to getting revenge on her son's bullies by killing them. [[ThatWomanIsDead She divorced her husband, changed her name to her maiden name, Maria Akeboshi, cut off contact with her friends, got plastic surgery]], and two years later begins to hunt down her targets. She's got revenge on two of her son bullies so far, Tsubasa Kowase (who would [[SinisterSuffocation drown his victims]], so she [[DrowningPit drowned him to death]]] and Kumiru Shikimi (who [[EvilHasABadSenseOfHumor laughed while her son was force-fed cockroaches]], so she was ThrownDownAWell and was [[CreepyCrawlyTorture eaten by insects]]). Maria, however, takes no joy in getting revenge or killing her son's bullies, no matter how much they deserve it, just sitting down and feeling sad and empty after the bullies die. It's implied that either she always knew her revenge would be empty, or she realized later but continued because she wanted to avenge her son, and [[IveComeTooFar she'd already gone too far to stop]].

* {{Irony}}: Nagare jumped to his own death to protect his mother's dignity. In order to avenge his death [[TheUnfettered his mother sinks to incredible lows]], ultimately making his sacrifice completely pointless.

** The first off Maria’s hit list is Kowase, who not only was a part of her son’s GangOfBullies, but also sexually exploited other girls for who knows how long, and is not above selling their compromising pictures that he took in secret and beating them up once he’s blackmailed them into being his punching bag. Maria just so happened to catch Kowase in the act of drowning a girl [[MoralMyopia he thinks is responsible of blackmailing him over HIS compromising videos]] when it was really Maria. She has Kowase go through a LifeOrLimbDecision in the DrowningPit unless he can get the password code of the date of his greatest sin. He thinks it’s Kiritaka’s death but [[ButForMeItWasTuesday he can’t even remember so much as the month it took place]]. [[spoiler: Kowase dies durning his struggle, and Maria unlocks the password anyway with his birthday as she sees his own birth as his greatest sin.]]

** Atsuki-sensei, Kowase's and Kumiru's homeroom teacher '''does''' seem to care for the wellness of the students under his wing but he fails to notice that Kowase is brutally beating up, raping and torturing Yajima, or that Kumiru goes out with older men to HoneyTrap them. Even worse, when he actually becomes informed of Kumiru's illicit activities, he completely buys into the BlatantLies Kumiru tells him and doesn't press the matter further.

** Kiritaka Nagare is socially isolated from the rest of his class as a direct result of a {{Frameup}} orchestrated by Kumiru.

* ArtisticLicenceBiology: Centipedes and cockroaches don't normally eat living human flesh. Though [[spoiler: Kumiru's death]] is based on an actual ancient execution method called [[https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scaphism "Scaphism"]], the victims of that method take ''days'' to die and the flesh has to fester and rot first before bugs actually begin devouring it.

* BaitAndSwitch: As Kumiru is about to be ThrownDownAWell, she is allowed by Maria to send just one text message to anyone she wants, the only limitation being that she doesn't outright ask for help. She eventually begins writing a message to [[TheSociopath Okaya]], asking him if he likes her and to come find her if he does. The scene then cuts to Okaya taking out his phone receiving a message on it, seemingly from Kumiru. [[spoiler: The message is actually from Okaya's mother as Kumiru was too scared of Okaya potentially not liking her to send the message]].
* BeautyIsBad: Kumiru is drawn out as a pretty schoolgirl. She’s also a completely rotten AlphaBitch who [[{{Frameup}} frames up]] people she doesn't like to socially isolate them and indulges in "[[https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/badger%20game Badger Games]]" to extort money out of emotionally vulnerable men.

** Kumiru portrays herself as sweet and sensitive to the men she dates, before blackmailing them out of exorbitant amounts of money after revealing that they were about to have sex with a minor.

** Kumiru essentially runs a "[[https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/badger%20game Badger Game]]" scam, wherein [[ReallySeventeenYearsOld she lies about her age on her dating profile]], [[HoneyTrap lures emotionally vulnerable men into love hotels]] by acting in a loving manner (even taking great care not to have them spend much on their dates to fool them into thinking she cares about them) and extorts men them out of exorbitant amounts of money in order to not reveal they attempted to have sex with a minor.

* HeadInTheSandManagement: The school Maria works at seems to bury their collective heads in the sand whenever something happens to a student and they get killed or go missing. After Kowase goes missing for over three weeks and Kumiru stops going to school, Atsuki starts becoming concerned that he's not doing enough to help the students, only for the principal to overrule him by telling him that the school can't have nasty rumors spreading when the students are close to entering preparatory schools, [[SkewedPriorities which could affect their academic performance]]. Maria silently laments that everyone in the party looks so happy, as if the incident with Kiritaka never happened.

** After a short process of elimination, Kumiru decides to use Maria's lifeline to text Iijima so he can come and rescue her. [[spoiler:[[TheChessmaster Maria has already turned him against her]], however, and Iijima quickly replies that he never wants to see Kumiru again. Kumiru starts tearing up at the revelation, and calls out Maria for "[[CrazyPrepared cheating]]".]]

** Kumiru regularly [[HoneyTrap runs badger game scams on lonely men]] and [[ManipulativeBitch manipulates events]] to [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer socially isolate people she doesn't like]]. Maria correctly guesses that Kumiru doesn't trust anyone and that her relationships are transactional in nature, and thus uses her own tactics against her by mentioning Kumiru's side-gig to her teacher and making it seem as if she's trying to FrameUp Kinugawa, which results in Kumiru SkippingSchool. Before Maria can move to the next step of her plan, Kumiru sends Iijima after her, after which Maria decides to simply move forward and [[FemmeFatale seduce Iijima]] before kidnapping Kumiru while she's home alone. Maria then [[ThrownDownAWell hangs her above an empty well]] with a rope that's about to burn and forces her to retrieve her phone's SIM card with her mouth while it is hidden in a box of razors, after which she allows her to send one text message to one person. Kumiru's first pick is Okaya, but upon checking their text history Kumiru realizes [[LovingAShadow he doesn't give a damn about her as he's never replied to her messages before]]. [[spoiler:When Kumiru tries to text Iijima, she realizes to her horror that [[YankTheDogsChain Maria has already turned him against her via a fake Twitter account]], leaving Kumiru to curse Maria as her rope burns and she falls into a hole festering with insects, which then crawl all over her and [[OrificeInvasion enter her body through her holes]]. [[CruelAndUnusualDeath At this point Kumiru can do nothing but scream]].]]

** Maria is later seen in her lingerie while checking her closet, [[StringTheory where she's keeping information on Kumiru]].
** Kumiru is wearing nothing but lingerie and a nightgown when [[spoiler:Maria breaks into her house at night, kidnaps her and eventually kills her]].

* NoHonorAmongThieves: The gang of bullies torturing Kiritaka don't really trust each other and don't really have each others' backs. When Kumiru is confronted by her homeroom teacher about her "[[HoneyTrap second job]]" she immediately suspects [[JerkJock Tsuyoshi]] and [[FatBastard Mutta]] of tattling on her.
* NothingNiceAboutSugarAndSpice: Kumiru definitely has shades of this. Her form of bullying Kiritaka is to sit back and gleefully watch him get tortured while recording everything he’s put through. It is outright confirmed when we get to see her [[ADayInTheLimelight being the focus of Maria's revenge]], she is shown to be a fully blown BitchInSheepsClothing that orchestrates a {{Frameup}} to socially isolate Kiritaka and regularly indulges in [[HoneyTrap Badger Games]] with emotionally vulnerable men in order to extort them out of huge amounts of money. All this to win the heart of [[TheSociopath Okaya]].

* RaceAgainstTheClock: Maria ties up Kumiru and hangs her above a deep hole, then lays a lit candle next to the rope holding her in place; she then tells Kumiru that, by her estimate, it will take the candle light three hours to reach the rope and drop Kumiru to her demise.

* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: {{Defied|Trope}} by Maria, who explicitly targets Kowase and Kumiru first because she knows that, unlike the rest of the gang, the two would try to run away the second they realized someone was after them. And Maria has no intention of letting any of them escape her wrath.

** Kumiru once staged a {{Frameup}}, making Kiritaka appear as a pervert and [[AllTheOtherReindeer socially isolating him from the rest of his class]]. Maria stages a {{Frameup}} of her own that exposes her as a liar and is using Kumiru's PsychologicalProjection to push her buttons in order to create tension between her social bonds in order to inflict the same sort of social isolation she had inflicted upon Nagare.
** Kumiru once subjected Kiritaka to a cruel game wherein she forced him to shove his face in a box full of tacks in order to retrieve her keys with his tongue. Maria in turn forces her to retrieve her phone's SIM card in a similar fashion from a box full of razors.
