* DumbMuscle: Unlike the incredible magical prowess showcased by Maou or the fine-tuned skill of Max, Zenia is both devoid of magical abilities and possesses no finesse in fighting, with her only ability being the application of brute strength. This causes plenty of comedy due to her muscle-brain ideas making things harder for her, such as walking all the way from the castle to Max's apartment without ever considering using human transportation, and when she tries to act as a spy infiltrating the Magic Bureau for intel, with her she constantly fumbles the “stealthy” aspects and ends up doing things like tearing out a door lock or BreakingTheBonds because lock-picking and slipping out of handcuffs is too difficult for her brain to handle.

* WeCanRuleTogether: Maou considers Max such a close equal and WorthyOpponent that he repeatedly makes offers to have him join his army, ranging from explaining the career benefits, to offering the chance of immortality, one time trying to coerce him with a potential lover, and more. Despite Max refusing him every time, Maou never lets it deter him, waiting for the day he might potentially accept the offer.

* CuteMonsterGirl: The idea of attractive inhuman girls is {{Deconstructed|Trope}} when Maou compiles a photo album of the most romantically viable women in his army in part of his efforts to [[WeCanRuleTOgether convince Max to join him]], as while many of them are genuinely quite attractive outside their monstrous aspects and Maou notes their wife-worthy personality traits, Max makes it clear that his tastes are firmly within a human-like normal, finding any bit of monstrosity too much of a turn-off.

* InvisibleToNormals: The ghost that haunts Max's room and likes hanging out in the closet is near-imperceptible to most people, with Maou being so weak he can only occasionally hear her voice and Max being unable to perceive even that. The only person that can truly perceive her is Fred due to his high magical prowess, something that turns out pretty bad for him since just the sight of her causes him to become weak-knee terrified and need to get out before he pukes, with him vowing to never go in Max's house again no matter how much he wants to catch the demon staying in there (which unbeknownst to him is the Demon Lord Maou).

* AntiVillain: Fred is willing to do a lot of morally questionable actions, up to thinking of killing Leo as a traitor, because he genuinely believes what he's doing is for the good of not just the Kingdom but humanity, having convinced himself that genuine peace and cooperation is impossible, only false peace through rigid control. He still cares about Max and would ''want'' to resolve things with Leo, but he too strongly feeds into the rhetoric that the Gamma Republic are terrorists whom must die for the good of the world.

* BarbarianHero: In the past Leo held to the image and attitude of a KnightInShiningArmor, constantly wearing armor and holding to being chivalrous but fierce with a sword, but after defecting from the Republic thanks to how they mistreated him and his followers, he shed the armor to wear nothing but a loincloth that exposes almost every part of his body's rippling musculature alongside having flowing BarbarianLongHair, returned to his roots of aggressive manliness and hunting for food with his bare hands and/or a spear, and overall holds to being more in tune with nature over society's rigid system of laws and ideals. Despite the brutish image, however, he actually still has his prior heroic and helpful values, he just holds to what ''he'' feels is right rather than letting the Kingdom influence his decisions.

** Max was involved in a scandal where he slept with a woman without knowing she was married until after the fact (and is convinced the husband was in on it too to extort him money), horribly beat up some civilians (it's never seen, but he claims they attacked him and hurt them in self defense because they were too fragile for someone who used to massacre demons in hordes), and various women came out claiming he was the father of their children. By the time the revived Demon Lord barges in to announce his return ten years later, Max is a lazy and depressed bum living in a dirty one-room apartment, his sword left with the piled-up trash bags.

The crux of the story is Maou trying to help Max get his act together and return to the great hero he once was while Maou over time regains his power.

* ResurrectiveImmortality: All demons possess seven lives before dying permanently, with it usually taking decades to centuries between revivals, so Maou sees it as no big deal that Max and his allies slaughtered him and his armies down to the last man, since they'll come back just fine eventually. * {{Bowdlerise}}: In the original manga Max's allegations, alongside assaulting civilians (he was beaten on by a group of thugs and framed as the aggressor), were having illicit relations with an underage girl (she claimed to be above consenting age when he went out with her) and drug possession (unexplained but likely set up to be found with them by some jerk). Considering both of those are treated as genuinely serious crimes in Japanese law, the anime adaptation (which is legally required to treat all genuine crimes seriously) changed them to the less criminally severe but still highly scandalous cases of having an affair with a married woman (she claimed to be single) and cheating on ten different women (while he claims he never went out with any of them, given his penchant for drinking they likely took advantage of him for the popularity of sueing the hero).

Long ago, one demon named Maou rose the ranks of demon-kind to eventually become the Demon Lord, then proceeded to lead his kind to slaughter humanity and rule the world. During this conquest, one determined hero named Max traveled the land defeating demons in his journey to defeat Maou and save the world, gathering a group of close companions along the way. Eventually this group reached the Demon King and they fought in a gruesome battle, until eventually Maou was finally beaten. Following his defeat, Maou commended the heroes while promising that one day he will revive, and they will clash once again.

* JadeColoredGlasses: Back when he was fighting against Maou’s forces Max held to being an idealistic and determined hero believing what he did mattered, but once society decided it had no place for heroes in a world of peace and tossed him aside as useless, he lost any sense of care about the world and occasionally claims to believe that Maou regaining his power and subjugating humanity would be something the world deserves for its crappiness.

* PaperThinDisguise: When Max and Maou go to the Gamma Republic, Max expresses concern over being recognized by his former friends there, to which Maou “solves” the problem by having him wear a combo of fake glasses, nose, and teeth. At first it seems like the “disguise” works when they come face-to-face with Leo, but then it’s subverted because Leo didn’t recognize Max not due to the disguise but due to it being years since they last saw each other and Leo forgot what he looks like, with it only through Maou blurting out Max’s name that his cover gets blown.
* RetiredBadass: Max has been reduced to living his life as a low-income bum in a small apartment after society tossed him aside as unneeded and various scandals ruined his reputation, alongside him becoming FormerlyFit due to not keeping his body in shape, but any time somebody tries to pick a fight with him or makes him genuinely angry, he shows himself to have retained his physical prowess by moving faster than most can see and throttling grown adults one-handed.
* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: In most stories where a man is found being attacked by a woman and defends himself, especially against one pulling a FullFrontalAssault, DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale comes into play and he’s the one punished, but here when a drunk and naked Zenia chases after Max and a brawl is about to start, the scuffle is stopped by police having been called about a public indecency incident and coming to detain Zenia, with it only by Max explaining she was a drunk-crazy acquaintence and pretending her brass knuckles were his that she wasn’t arrested over attempted assult as well.
* UnskilledButStrong: Unlike the incredible magical prowess showcased by Maou or the fine-tuned skill of Max, Zenia is both devoid of magical abilities and possesses no finesse in fighting, with her only ability being the application of brute strength. This causes plenty of comedy when she tries to act as a spy infiltrating the Magic Bureau for intel, as she constantly fumbles the “stealthy” aspects and ends up doing things like tearing out a door lock or BreakingTheBonds because lock-picking and slipping out of handcuffs is too difficult for her brain to handle.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: Following the defeat of Maou and his demonic forces, Max, Fred, and Leo each ended up experiencing major disagreements over how things should go from then on, which resulted in Fred joining the kingdom’s Magic Bureau, Leo defecting with his closest allies to form the Gamma Republic, and Max deciding to not get involved in their conflict so he wouldn’t be forced to kill one of his friends. The only member of the former hero group still on good terms with everybody is Yuria, who simply retired and settled into a happy normal life.
