* CooldownHug: After escaping [[spoiler:being tortured and raped by Foxx]] Ash is understandably in a bad state but won’t accept anyone’s help, even slapping Cain’s hand away when he tries to offer help. Shortly after Eiji comes to Ash and gives him a hug without saying a word. The gesture stops Ash’s tremors and he’s able to slightly relax and calm down.

* {{Bishonen}}: Ash, most definitely. Eiji also qualifies, moreso in the anime. And Yau-Si. Sing Soo-Rin [[spoiler: grows to be one in Garden of Light]]. It's not quite a CastFullOfPrettyBoys, but there's several of them.

* SurprisinglyGoodEnglish: The anime is full of English text, and most of it is spot-on aside from the occasional minor grammatical error.

Creator/VizMedia originally published the English version of the manga under its ''Shoujo Beat'' label. Following the anime's broadcast, they decided to issue a reprint.

* RapeDiscretionShot: Several times, most notably with [[spoiler: Foxx]].

* LaughingMad: When Ash is forcibly under Golzine's custody again and learns he's to be married to his abuser and rapist, he bursts into hysterical laughter talking about how he and the other kids were always treated as objects, until he's slapped and snaps out of it.

* SocietyMarchesOn: The decision by MAPPA to set the anime in the [[TheNewTens present day]] can be jarring for viewers who are familiar with modern-day New York, which hasn't really been as dangerous and crime-ridden as it's shown in the series since TheNineties. The idea of TheMafia as all-powerful is also pretty discredited today, with most of its leaders aging, dead or in prison, and the whole apparatus severely weakened.

* WordSaladTitle: "Banana Fish" sounds like a very strange and nonsensical title for a crime/action series at first glance. However, there is meaning behind it, both as the story's initial ArcWords that raises the question of just what this mysterious "Banana Fish" is, as well as a ShoutOut to Creator/JDSalinger's short story "A Perfect Day for Bananafish".

* MrFanservice: Ash, [[ShirtlessScene on]] occasion.Though mostly it's a serious case of FanDisservice, considering the circumstances he's put through—especially in his past, when he was a child.
