** A-kun is so vitriolic the only friends he could get are his next-door neighbor, Yoshiko (whom he thoroughly detests for her incredible levels of stupidity) and Sayaka, who hangs around him because she's enough of an ExtremeDoormat to be Yoshiko's friend. The only other people who want to hang around him are a delusional StalkerWithACrush and a delinquent who looks up to him because of a misundertanding (and whose friendship A-kun doesn't want.)

* ADogNamedDog: Taken to its most literal conclusion with Yoshiko's pet dog, Dog.

* AbusiveParents: Yoshie, Yoshiko's mother. [[ZanyScheme She frequently hatches plans to get A-kun together with her daughter]], all of which involve [[DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnMale drugging him so Yoshiko can have her way with him.]] She's also not above drugging Yoshiko herself to get things that she wants, such as when Yoshiko's father comes back from a business trip. Even if Yoshiko wasn't so shockingly stupid, it's hard to imagine that she'd have a normal upbringing.

* AntiRoleModel: The neighborhood children are quick to pick up on the fact that Yoshiko is ''not'' someone to look up to. They enjoy her company as a playmate, but even ''they'' know she needs to put in the work for school.

* AssholeVictim: Dowplayed with Akkun, who while isn't in a life-threatening situation, has problem making friends. Sayaka points out to him that his aloofness and condescension to others has left him with Yoshiko as his only friend.
* AttractiveBentGender: "Yoshio", who manages to capture the heart of Ms. Oshieda.

* ButtMonkey: Ryuuichi Kurosaki. Yoshiko frequently forgets who he is and despite his attempts to befriend him, A-kun treats him like crap. To make matters worse, both treat him more as an underling (although he does bring this upon himself due to his shy nature).
* CantHoldHerLiquor: At the karaoke place at the near end of episode 9, the waiter gives Sayaka beer instead of soda that everyone else got. And she gets drunk off it...not by taking a sip, but by ''accidentally inhaling the fumes!''
* ChasteHero: A-kun has no other interests other than studying, something that neither The Public Morals Chairwoman nor Yoshiko's mother understands despite his repeated insistence. In A-kun's defense, while his "gang" mostly consists of attractive women, all of them are incredibly stupid and/or naive to the point no sane person would willingly hand around them.
* ChristmasCake: Homeroom teacher Ms. Oshieda. She's 28 and has never had a lover, a fact that she's made painfully aware of whenever she's with Yoshiko.

* CovertPervert: The Public Morals Chairwoman. She mostly uses her title as a cover for her to get involved in {{Zany Scheme}}s, which just as often as not revolve around lustful, perverted goals towards A-kun, like seeing him naked or stealing his clothes from his house.

* DitzyGenius: Thanks to all of her playing, Yoshiko shows an almost ''Film/ForrestGump'' level of aptitude towards things that require speed and stamina. She's able to run for 3 hours straight without breaking a sweat and she manages to out-dance the local men during the Obon Festival. Not to mention when Ms. Osheida puts her through idol training she is able to memorize the steps at a first glance, and dances with such pinpoint accuracy that she dodges the ants at her feet, while eating a banana.

* EnragedByIdiocy: Akuru's feelings towards several of the other characters around him, especially Yoshiko. Sayaka is probably the only one who doesn't get this. He tries not to do this to Ruri, but sometimes her idiocy will cause him to slip up and get pissed off.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: The "Public Morals Chairwoman" isn't known by anything other than her job title, despite essentially being one of the main characters and appearing in most of the key artwork for the manga and anime.
* GagBoobs: The Public Morals Chairwoman. Her large breasts seem to enrage both Yoshiko and her mother (who think A-kun will be seduced by them, even though he's clearly uninterested) and they two of them often concoct schemes to embarrass her for it (like drawing nipples on her bra, or burying her in sand to cover them).
* GenkiGirl: Yoshiko's only goals in life are to play and eat bananas, and she does so with gusto.

* GyaruGirl: Akane Eimura, Kii Hiragi and Kuroko Shiina are collectively known by Yoshiko as the Gal-girls, and other characters describe them as such. However, it could be argued that they're a downplayed example as only Akane really fashions her school uniform like that of the subculture (the ''kogal'' fashion of school uniform with super short skirts and loose socks). They're also relatively pure when it comes to men: out of the three of them, only Kuroko has a boyfriend and she's so shy about it that she has to be encouraged by Yoshiko to tell him that she loves him, a far cry from the ReallyGetsAround stigma that gyarus get stereotyped for.

* HypercompetentSidekick: While Dog being smarter than Yoshiko is almost a given considering her level of intellect, A-kun finds out in one chapter that Dog is able to understand western movies and show appropriate emotions towards the complex plot, making this title actually meaningful.
* IgnoreTheFanservice: A-kun ignores Yoshiko's various attempts to seduce him completely. He also does the same to the Public Morals Chairwoman.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: A-kun ends up getting a book on living without a school diploma for Ruri, and spends a lot of time trying to comfort her about not being smart enough and tells her it's okay to give up-- all in good nature of course. Ruri then tells him that she didn't want any of those things-- simply for [[ArmorPiercingResponse A-kun to actually be a better brother to her.]]

* {{Jerkass}}: Yoshie. Aside from her [[BabyTrap plans]] to get A-kun and Yoshiko together, she becomes downright unpleasant to any female that hangs around A-kun (considering them a threat to her plans), frequently tormenting the Public Morals Chairwoman for having big breasts and harassing Sayaka by flipping her skirt to make sure she doesn't wear any adult underwear to "tempt" A-kun. It's also implied that [[DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnMale her first time with Yoshiko's dad may have not even been consensual on his end.]]
* KiddieKid: Yoshiko's so emotionally immature that even the playground kids tell her that she should go study.
* KindheartedSimpleton: Yoshiko is ''so'' pure and naive that she is ''adamant'' the random delinquent terrorizing Akkun, Sayaka and herself in Episode 2 is angry because he is lonely and has nobody to play with... so much so that ''he'' is moved to TenderTears about how it's the first time ''anyone'' has cared so-much about him.
* LargeHam: Yoshiko stands out in this even against the background of other characters, literally screaming every one of her lines and depicting every emotion as directly as possible.

* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] since technically their homeroom teacher refers to A-kun by his proper first-name, Akuru. Every other main character called him A-kun, which gets hilarious when the incredibly polite Sayaka adds an additional honorific and calls him A-kun-san.

* NiceGirl: Sayaka, [[ExtremeDoormat to a fault]]. She legitimately wants to be friends with Yoshiko and is generally nice to every character, even when they walk all over her. The few times she loses her cool, [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness gets treated seriously by the other characters]].

* PoseOfSupplication: Sayaka's dogeza in episode 3 to ask the farmer, Satou-san for train fare after running over 3 hours.

* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Yoshiko frequently and unashamedly strips down to her bra and panties in her (failed) attempts to entice A-kun and didn't need much convincing to wear a PlayboyBunny outfit for one of her mom's hair-brained schemes. And then there's her costume for the Obon Festival, which the other dancers didn't want to let her use (but she did anyways).
* ShipperOnDeck: Yoshie is this in a rather twisted sense: she wants Akuru to marry Yoshiko, but it's only so she can mooch off of him when he eventually gets a well paying job. However, he says he has no interest in dating a monkey, which he sees Yoshiko as due to her idiocy and extreme love of bananas.
* StalkerWithACrush: The Public Morals Committee Chairwoman is obsessed with A-kun and repeatedly follows him around (generally for lewd reasons).

* {{Tsundere}}: A-kun is practically a male version of ShanaClone in the context of his interaction with Yoshiko. He obviously cares about her and tries to help Yoshiko, but at the same time he regularly beats her and calls her a fool. The Public Morals Chairwoman makes a bad attempt at the act, but it doesn't really matter since A-kun finds either the act or her real personality abhorrent anyways.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Yoshiko and bananas. They can be used to motivate her and she can and will go out of her way for especially high quality bananas.

%% WorldOfHam: Given the genre of this work, it is not surprising.
* WouldHitAGirl: Zigzagged. A-kun isn't above giving Yoshiko a DopeSlap or even using ''suplex'' moves against her, but would simply dodge the advances of the Public Morals Committee Chairwoman rather than attack her like he does Yoshiko. It's also implied that A-kun does so mostly out of frustration with Yoshiko's antics than anything else. He also tries really hard to avoid upsetting Ruri, his younger sister.

* TooDumbToLive: Yoshiko, without question. As mentioned above, she manages to score zeroes in multiple choice tests. Her knowledge of math only consists of basic addition, despite being in high school. When Ms. Oshieda tries to teach her Japanese, Yoshiko can't even remember the kanji of ''her own name''. She almost takes the "not living" part of the trope to a literal level by her willingness to ignore the traps (and warnings) that A-kun sets to stop her from barging into his room from the balcony, most of which (door-activated stun-gun, spiked chandelier) would have probably killed her if it weren't for the nature of the series and her almost superhuman endurance. Ruri is probably a sadder example since she's equally as stupid as Yoshiko, but at least has the good sense to be self-aware of how dumb she is.
