''Aho Girl'' revolves around high schooler Yoshiko Hanabatake, who lives up to the series name. Yoshiko is stupid. Like, a "get all 0's on multiple choice tests" level of stupid. At the tearful pleas of Yoshiko's mother, Akuru vows to make Yoshiko mentally evolve to "at least something human-like". Along the way, they are joined by many other fellow idiots as they probe deeper into the true meaning of idiocy.

!!''Aho Girl'' provides examples of the following tropes:
* ACupAngst: Sayaka feels this the most, but Yoshiko has this too, especially whenever the Public Morals Chairwoman is around.
* ADogNamedDog: Taken to its most literal conclusion with Yoshiko's pet dog, Dog.
* AbhorrentAdmirer: Yoshiko is frequently shown to disgust Akkun, due to both her lack of brains and her disgusting eating habits.
** The Public Morals Chairwoman also puts off Akkun, due to her habits of stalking, aggressive advances and aggressive stupidity.
* AbusiveParents: Yoshie, Yoshiko's mother. She frequently hatches plans to get Akkun together with her daughter, all of which involve drugging him and putting Yoshiko in racy outfits. Even if Yoshiko wasn't so shockingly stupid, it's hard to imagine that she'd have a normal upbringing.
* AlliterativeName: Akuru Akutsu, Sayaka Sumino.
* AttractiveBentGender: "Yoshio", who manages to capture the heart of Ms. Oshieda.
* AmusingInjuries: Part of the appeal of the series. Akuru does '''not''' hold back the force at which he disciplines Yoshiko whenever she's doing something stupid (which is often).
* BerserkButton:
** Yoshiko is a walking berserk button to Akkun.
** So far the only thing to make Yoshiko truly angry is when [[spoiler: some gang members badmouth the Banana Frappucino and beat up Ryuuichi.]]
* BigBrotherInstinct: Akkun has a strong one towards his little sister Ruri.
* ButtMonkey: Ryuuichi Kurosaki. Yoshiko frequently forgets who he is and despite his attempts to befriend him, Akkun treats him like crap treating him more as an underling.
* ChasteHero: Akkun has no other interests other than studying, something that neither The Public Morals Chairwoman nor Yoshiko's mother understands despite his repeated statements.
* ChristmasCake: Homeroom teacher Ms. Oshieda. She's 28 and has never had a lover, a fact that she's made painfully aware of whenever she's with Yoshiko.
* GyaruGirl: Akane Eimura, Kii Hiragi and Kuroko Shiina, collectively known by Yoshiko as the Gal-girls.
* {{Jerkass}}: Yoshie. Aside from her [[BabyTrap plans]] to get Akkun and Yoshiko together, she becomes downright unpleasant to any female that hangs around Akkun (considering them a threat to her plans), frequently tormenting the Public Morals Chairwoman for having big breasts and harassing Sayaka by flipping her skirt to make sure she doesn't wear any adult underwear to "tempt" Akkun.
* NotSoDifferent: Yoshiko and several people:
** Despite his intelligence, Akuru is shown to be just as much of an outcast as Yoshiko. It's often pointed out that Yoshiko is his only friend, a fact which gets him mocked by Akane and causes Sayaka to befriend him out of pity. His aloof nature also causes him to be insensitive to other people's feelings, just like Yoshiko.
** Despite hating Yoshiko for being an idiot and her whole MO for studying being so that she doesn't end up like Yoshiko, Ruri routinely scores zeros on her tests.
** The Public Morals Committee Chairwoman cannot stand Yoshiko, but Akkun considers her to be a nuisance on the level of Yoshiko
** Akane wants to be more popular, desires a boyfriend and has a penchant for playing instead of doing her studies just like Yoshiko, something which Akuru points out.
* OnlySaneMan: Poor Akkun. Sayaka also takes this role whenever Akkun's not around (or whenever he's too enraged to do so).
* StalkerWithACrush: The Public Morals Committee Chairwoman.
* StraightMan: Sayaka is the only one who truly fits this role, often moderating interactions between Yoshiko and others.
* SlapstickKnowsNoGender: Oh yes. It could probably be argued that the girls suffer more slapstick than the boys.
* TooDumbToLive: They don't call her "Aho Girl" for nothing.
