* In a flashback in ''Literature/TheImmortals'', Daine goes feral and runs naked on all fours with a wolf pack, forgetting that she was human and barely understanding that when she has to attack someone, a knife is more effective than her teeth. She's stabbed in the process of killing someone and retreats into the underbrush, where she tries to lick the wound in her side and can't reach. One of the wolves finds her and does it for her. Because she is a demigoddess, this makes the wolf become [[AmplifiedAnimalAptitude far more intelligent]].

* In ''Literature/{{Sirena}}'', the titular mermaid has no idea how to treat Philoctetes' infected leg wound, so she imitates the land animals she's seen and licks it. The pressure causes some of the pus to ooze out. She squeezes the rest of the pus out with her hands and bathes the wound in seawater.

* ''Literature/TheMoonAndTheSun'': Sea folk lick their wounds to heal them. After Marie-Josèphe is [[HarmfulHealing bled]], the sea woman licks the infected wound on her arm, which heals it within hours. Marie-Josèphe doesn't make the connection - later, when the sea woman injures her shoulder in an escape attempt, Marie-Josèphe scolds her not to lick it, thinking she will make it worse.

Added DiffLines:

An instinctive behavior in both animals and humans when injured is to lick the wound.

Saliva does contain anti-bacterial agents and possibly tissue factors that promote healing, but it's not generally recommended in RealLife given the possibility of infection and especially not after major surgery. Hence the existence of the ConeOfShame.
