Even if death is not necessarily [[DeathIsCheap cheap]] in this universe, as long as you can heal yourself, you are safe. You have hurt yourself horribly before and yet you have cheated death time and time again.
Which makes this situation all the worse. One of the characters has received a horrible wound, and their friend turn to the medics and/or wizards to beg them to heal their friend, but none of them step up to do it. It's not that they don't want to, it's not even that they can't, but they know its useless, they are mortally wounded and none of their methods will make any difference. It's only a matter of time before they leave.
This becomes a very emotional moment because it is the first time that the cast must deal with death (well, [[RedShirt the first time they care at least]]), and almost always will be a character that the audience [[SacrificialLion have already made a bond with]], making the death even more powerful, expect some parting LastWords. This may lead to ComfortTheDying if they can't save them, but don't want to leave them to die. Or a MercyKill if they want to shorten their suffering.
