Life on the PopularityFoodChain is often treated by works as a thing of mockery and occasional cosmic cruelty. What you often get is the character that embodies this view of it to act as the AudienceSurrogate or social commentator.

* Dedicate Rosethorn from the CircleOfMagic series qualifies. She's very much a sarcastic and irritable CynicalTeacher to Briar, but she has given up a normal life in order to help the poor.

* ''SuzumiyaHaruhi'''s Kyon is this trope in spades. Most of his dialouge revolves around him being snarking over how the world literally revolves around Haruhi's whims.

This character has a world-weary disdain for ''everyone'', herself included. She (or in rarer cases ''he'') typically suffers from a healthy dose of IntelligenceEqualsIsolation, and is the type to stand aside at parties and quietly drink beer ([[FrothyMugsOfWater or just a soda!]]) while making [[DeadpanSnarker cold-hearted quips]] about the [[SurroundedByIdiots idiocy that surrounds her]]. To the herd followers she deprecates, this makes her a JerkAss. Sympathetic versions often see their antisocial behaviour as a sort of personal crusade and personal stand against every single piece of idiocy around her, not letting any moronic action of the GirlPosse escape the cold steel of her opinion. TheLibby and JerkJock are her mortal enemies (yet for some reason the JerkJock will still often try to creepily hit on her) and if she has any positive interaction with the BigManOnCampus then she is to be his CoolLoser, teaching him not to be a self satisfied twat while he teaches her to be less haughty and smile a little.

* Daron Malakian of ''{{System of a Down}}'' exhibits this. At one point he says to an interviewer "I hate you. I hate everyone. Everyone should die."

* Seven of Nine from ''StarTrekVoyager''. Any episode featuring a party in the mess hall has an obligatory scene where Seven is standing aloof from the proceedings, making DeadpanSnarker comments. And although drop-dead gorgeous, she is rather indifferent to it.
** Odo of ''DeepSpaceNine'' started this way, too.
** ''Star Trek'' as a franchise enjoys deadpan snarkers. Dr. [=McCoy=] from ''[[StarTrekTheOriginalSeries TOS]]'' is very much a traditional Southern Snarker (a little more hot-blooded than the ordinary deadpan), while ''[[StarTrekTheNextGeneration TNG]]'' has an episode where Beverly Crusher is shown to have deadpan snarker tendencies. ''Enterprise'' seems to toss the Snark Ball between Malcolm, Archer, and Trip.

Subtrope of DeadpanSnarker mixed with KnightInSourArmor, often used to [[JustifiedTrope justify]] the CoolLoser. Generally the opposite of the StepfordSmiler, but can be [[{{Deconstruction}} deconstructed]] to show that she [[NotSoDifferent just hides her emotional issues in the exact opposite manner]]. Contrast LonersAreFreaks. If badly done, they may end up as a verbally-abusive JerkSue.

She's also quicker with the snark than she is with her bow.

* ''SuzumiyaHaruhi'''s Kyon is this trope in spades, especially considering out of the group he hangs out with, [[RealityWarper Haruhi]], [[TimeTraveler Mikuru]], [[PsychicPowers Itsuki]], and [[ArtificialHuman Yuki]], he's the only normal person.
