His parents snuck his infant self into Kal-El's rocket just before it launched, but when it landed, he crawled away into the bushes, so Jonathan and Martha Kent didn't notice him and left him behind. When he finds out, he gets pissed at Clark for growing up with loving parents while he grew up in an orphanage.

* Tywin Lannister's younger brother Tygett had some reputation as a warrior, to the point his nephew Jaime is frequently compared to Tygett, but for all his accomplishments, Tygett could never step out of his elder brother's shadow as a skilled general and politican. According to their sister Genna, being overshadowed by Tywin all his life made Tygett more bitter and angry as the years went by.

** In the Literature/CiaphasCain novel ''The Traitor's Hand'', Tomas Beije profoundly dislikes his old classmate Cain. It's difficult to pin his resentment on any one event without bringing in almost every personality trait of Cain's, but in a quick comparison, Cain is fun-loving, mischievous, not particularly pious, incredibly likable, ReallyGetsAround, and frequently tackled Beije whenever a scrumball game came up (to be fair, so did ''every'' scrumball player opposing him, Beije's attitude never won him many friends). As of him growing up, not much of that changed, through he also seemed decidedly slack on discipline (In other words, he wasn't a trigger-happy task master) in his regiment, and appeared to spend a significant amount of time away from his official duties as a commissar. Beije is... none of those things, and was devoutly religious and a tattletale. However, one of them was stuck with an unremarkable [[TheFundamentalist Tallarn]] unit, while another happens to be regarded as one of the Imperium's greatest heroes, and is the current Commissar to the famed Valhallan 597th. Given the title, you can probably guess which is which. Eventually, Beije attempts to discredit Cain, due to his envy over Cain getting everything handed to him and having everything come easy. This backfires spectacularly: by bringing a Tallarn squad to arrest Cain for desertion (because Cain is investigating a ritual site instead of fighting on the front lines), he only ensures Cain has plenty of witnesses to testify that [[spoiler:Cain was right to suspect daemonic influence when Emeli returns as a daemon princess, and that Cain fought off her easily fought off her seductions before defeating her, while Beije underwent minor MindRape when she touched him]]. Not only do the Tallarns end up adding Cain to their saints, worshipping him as an incarnation of the Emperor's will, ''Beije'' is the one to get officially reprimanded for wasting everyone's time. Cain also officially challenges him to a chainsword duel due to insulting the Valhallan's ColonelBadass unless Beije apologizes (he does so). Cain notes afterwards that he'll pull enough strings to pull Beije's ass out of the fire he lit under himself (Beije's reaction to that is unknown).

[[folder:Anime and Manga]]
* ''Anime/YuGiOh'':
** Seto Kaiba resents Yugi for having dethroned him as the dueling king. He also likely resents the idea that Yugi (or rather, his SuperpoweredEvilSide Yami Yugi) beats his opponents BecauseDestinySaysSo, whereas Kaiba himself has to work hard to beat his opponents -- and HardWorkHardlyWorks. He eventually gets over this when he sees Yugi fight ''against'' Yami Yugi and hold his own.
** Kaiba himself attracts one resenter after another in {{filler}}. His foster brother Noah hates him for stealing what Noah feels is rightfully his. The [[CorruptCorporateExecutive Big Five]] resent the way Kaiba discarded them after all the work they did helping him seize control of the company. And Kaiba's EvilCounterpart Siegfried von Schroeder resents the fact that [=KaibaCorp=] beat him to deals with Pegasus and Industrial Illusions (and put his company out of business).
* ''Anime/DragonBallZ'' gives us Vegeta, prince of a {{proud warrior race|guy}} who is incredibly {{arrogant|kungfuguy}} and boastful -- which means that when IdiotHero Goku[[note]]who also happens to be from a lower-class bloodline, for added insult[[/note]] constantly upstages him, he doesn't take it well. Goku does do this to [[CantCatchUp practically all of his teammates]], but only Vegeta has so much "pride" as to be resentful.
%%* Aoba towards Kou in ''CrossGame''.
* In ''Manga/DeathNote'', [[{{Determinator}} Mello]] resents [[TheChessmaster Near]] for constantly edging ahead of him at their mutual SchoolForScheming. His overriding motivation throughout is to prove himself superior to Near.
* ''Anime/SpacePirateMito'': Ranban's villainous motivation comes from being imprisoned because his body never settled on a gender, which drove him insane enough to get revenge by blowing up his planet (of which he was a member of the royal family). Only Mito escaped, and he continued to pursue her, mostly because he resented the fact that she could rule the galaxy while he was denied this right, despite the fact they were practically twins, except for the gender thing.
* ''Anime/ElHazardTheMagnificentWorld'': Katsuhiko Jinnai is AlwaysSecondBest to Makoto Mizuhara and declares the two lifelong rivals, much to Makoto's confusion. Whether or not his resentment equates to his StartOfDarkness, though, depends on the adaptation.
* ''Franchise/{{Gundam}}'':
** In the original ''Anime/MobileSuitGundam'', Kai Shiden and Hayato Kobayashi both resent Amuro Ray for his talent and the fact that he is key to the crew's survival; they feel he gets far too many privileges because of this. When Amuro avoids execution for deserting the ship, they both desert themselves in protest. Hayato has the added excuse that he's in love with Fraw Bo, [[LoveTriangle who has a crush on Amuro]] ([[UnluckyChildhoodFriend which Amuro, for his part, doesn't seem to notice or care about]]). The two are on much friendlier terms in ''Anime/MobileSuitZetaGundam'', by which point [[VictoriousChildhoodFriend Fraw Bo has (mostly) gotten over Amuro and married Hayato instead]].
** In ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEED'', Sai resents Flay for sleeping with Kira. He gets over it midway through the series. The series also gives us [[spoiler:[[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds Rau Le Creuset]], who]] resents [[MisanthropeSupreme pretty much everybody.]]
** ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamNarrative'': Jona and Michele's dynamics imply that whatever improved position in life they have was due to Michele capitalizing on Rita's prediction of the Sydney Colony Drop—such that even if both Jona and Michele were not "really" Newtypes and Rita is the only one who actually is, they were treated and protected by the Federation as if all of them were. Jona, for his part, lacks closure over his and Rita's separation after Michele tried her best to improve their situation, even if that separation means he's still alive in the present.
* In an odd twist, the BadassNormal GenkiGirl giving TheCall in ''Manga/PsychoStaff'' is also rather resentful that the call's {{refus|alOfTheCall}}er, a powerful esper, [[IJustWantToBeNormal would rather study for uni exams]] than help win an interplanetary war. She also despises an [[MadScientist evil genius]] who thinks that she can beat her with a super suit. ("You're both amateur fighters!")
* ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'':
** Naruto spends much of the first half of the series resenting Sasuke for consistently outperforming him. When he finally calmed down and accepted Sasuke as an equal, ''Sasuke'' resents Naruto for catching up to him in spite of his winning the SuperpowerLottery.
** Neji resented the Main Branch Hyuuga for the freedom they stole from him and the death of his father. He especially resented Hinata for being perceived as weaker than him[[note]]in reality, her crippling self-esteem issues prevented her from showing off even an ounce of her true strength until she got encouragement from Naruto[[/note]] yet holding a higher position within the clan.
** Danzo resents Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, as he felt he should have been the Third himself. He thought his own KnightTemplar approach was better suited than Sarutobi's idealism. He kind of admired Sarutobi's toughness and courage when he was younger, but that quickly turned to resentment when he realized he could never match that.
** This played a big part in the schism between Madara and [[spoiler:Hashirama Senju, also known as the First Hokage]]. Madara simply could not get over how [[spoiler:Hashirama]] was a superior fighter and more importantly a far more charismatic man able to inspire others to his ideals.
* In the final episode of ''Anime/CaroleAndTuesday'', [[TheRival Angela]] admits that this was the source of her animosity towards the duo: they remind her of when she was a child, and singing was still enjoyable for her. By this point, Angela has gotten over that resentment, and joins Carole and Tuesday for their guerrila concert.
* Sugimoto in ''Literature/TheTwelveKingdoms'', who as the series progresses starts to take her belief that TheChosenOne was chosen incorrectly to annoying heights.
* In the Scramble for the Throne arc of ''Manga/{{Kinnikuman}}'', Super Phoenix is bitter that a buffoon like Suguru has so much wealth and fame, while he grew up in poverty and obscurity.
* Ultra Magnus in ''Anime/TransformersRobotsInDisguise'' feels that as the strongest warrior on Cybertron, he was more deserving of the Matrix than Optimus Prime.
%%* Kurumi in ''Manga/KimiNiTodoke''.
* [[TheLancer Furuichi]] in ''Anime/XamdLostMemories''. His [[GreenEyedMonster envy]] and bit of an [[AlwaysSomeoneBetter inferiority complex]] is gradually shown; he is envious that [[TheHero Akiyuki]] has everything he wants (being TheChosenOne, the love interest [[TheChick Haru]], etc.), and he becomes a [[spoiler:RivalTurnedEvil]] out of that resentment. [[spoiler:It does not end well for him.]]
* ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf'':
** Ryoga blames Ranma for almost everything bad about his life. The main reasons why he's resentful are:
*** Ranma always beats him in a fight. On the off chance he loses, he always manages to goad Ryoga into a rematch, beat him, and get the last word.
*** Ranma's curse turns him into a [[AttractiveBentGender hot]] [[GenderBender girl]], while Ryoga gets turned into a little black piglet, all because of an accident involving the two of them.
*** Ranma is engaged to Akane and [[AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther gets all her attention]], while Ryoga is [[JustFriends stuck in the friend zone]].
** Downplayed with Mousse, another of Ranma's rivals, whose entire hostile relationship with Ranma is born out of his resentment that Ranma is, [[AccidentalMarriage by tribal law]], the legal husband of the female Chinese Amazon, Shampoo. Not helping is that Shampoo quite vocally loves Ranma. Mousse blames his entire failure to win Shampoo's heart on Ranma's existence, and devotes himself to defeating Ranma in hopes of annulling the engagement. The facts that Ranma didn't ''want'' Shampoo's hand in marriage, that Ranma generally would be happy to give Shampoo to Mousse, and that Shampoo wanted nothing to do with Mousse for years before either of them knew Ranma existed fails to dissuade Mousse from his resentment. Ironically, outside of this field, Mousse normally doesn't give a damn about Ranma--unlike Ryoga, who is generally willing to blame everything wrong in his life on Ranma.
* ''Anime/FutureGPXCyberFormula'' has Naoki Shinjyo and Karl Lichter von Randoll. The former becomes extremely resentful of Hayato and others for the attention they are getting, and the latter is not only resentful of Hayato's later success, but also of his relationship with Asuka. In ''11'', he resents Schumacher for what he thinks is messing up with his pace. Both get over their resentment as the series progresses.
* In ''Manga/RurouniKenshin'', Yumi Komagata is revealed to resent the fighters in the [[QuirkyMinibossSquad Jupon]] [[CarnivalOfKillers Gatana]]. Because [[BigBad Makoto Shishio]], her lover and their employer, always respected strength and good fighting ability, their skills made her feel useless by comparison. [[spoiler:This prompts her self-sacrifice during Shishio's fight with Kenshin, in an effort to be ''somehow'' useful to him in a battle]].
* Envy in ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist'' resents the entire human race for their ability to live full lives despite their limitations, something that [[NoBiologicalSex it]] is literally incapable of doing. The [[Anime/FullmetalAlchemist 2003 anime version]] of Envy specifically resents the Elric brothers on account of his own [[spoiler:ParentalAbandonment]].
* Three cases occur in ''Manga/{{Berserk}}'' that also overlap with GreenEyedMonster.
** After Guts joins the Band of the Hawk, Casca resents Guts for becoming the clear favorite of their leader, Griffith, despite, Casca's years of loyalty in contrast to Guts's reckless insubordination. Her romantic feelings for Griffith only make it worse.
** Between insane Casca and her caretaker Farnese, Farnese feels resentment toward Casca because she often causes Guts trouble out of her fear of him. Despite this, Guts still goes out of his way for her and is, in fact, still deeply in love with Casca and is striving to find a cure for her insanity. However, Farnese has feelings for Guts, and although she knows that it is highly unlikely that he will ever reciprocate her affection, she at least wants his merit in the group as a witch in training. Guts does see Farnese as a person of worth to his group, but beyond that, he doesn't see her as any more than a fellow comrade and Casca's caregiver.
** Young Sonia resents Princess Charlotte and the relationship that she has with Griffith as his fiance (and his MealTicket), seeing her as nothing more than a useless duck who has no real use beyond being the key to the throne of Midland, while Sonia sees herself as being a much more useful kite since she is gifted with clairvoyance and knows that Griffith is beyond this world.
* In ''Manga/MarchComesInLikeALion'', Kyoko resents Rei for being the best in shogi (and by extension, gaining the attention of their father), and that resentment is shown through her attempts to lead him into failure, even when she's being fairly cordial to him otherwise.
* Shiratori in ''Manga/YandereKanojo'' resents Manabu for [[TeenGenius becoming best in his class]] without [[AchievementsInIgnorance really trying]] (and taking it nonchalantly) and completely ignoring his own efforts to make it that high.
* The {{Human Alien|s}} commander in ''Anime/TheLegendOfBlackHeaven'' is a highly trained, highly decorated military veteran commanding an armada of spaceships -- except he's completely dependent on a fleet-destroying WaveMotionGun powered by [[ThePowerOfRock the music]] of a middle-aged ex-rockstar from an InsignificantLittleBluePlanet. His resentment occasionally boils over, prompting him to challenge the HordeOfAlienLocusts in a conventional engagement -- which, inevitably, leads to heavy losses and a mad scramble to invite TheChosenOne back on the ship to fire up the WaveMotionGun. He also starts to suspect that his fiancée -- whom he's sort of neglected to [[MarriedToTheJob command the fleet]] -- may be getting a little ''too'' close to the "hero" she's supposed to be managing.
* Jeremy from ''Manga/ACruelGodReigns'' after he [[spoiler: [[BrokenPedestal finds out his mother knew]] he was being [[RapeAsBackStory abused by his stepfather]]]]. Jeremy realizes that he is constantly angry and he [[ConflictBall tends to lose his cool]] around Ian because [[spoiler: Ian knows why he killed his stepfather]]. He tries to stop it by [[TinMan shutting off all of his emotions]]. This [[SelfHarm doesn't work out]] [[DrivenToSuicide well for him]].
* Seiren of ''Anime/SuitePrettyCure'' works for Mephisto because of resentment. She was good friends with FairyCompanion Hummy until Queen Aphrodite chose Hummy over Seiren to be the one to sing the Melody of Happiness. She grew incredibly envious, thinking she was used. It isn't until she becomes human full time and is on the road to becoming Cure Beat full time that she realizes the consequences of her actions.
* IdiotSavant Mashiro of ''LightNovel/ThePetGirlOfSakurasou'' seems to bring this out of people everywhere, as she was alienated from her friends at home because of her talent. Rita suggested that she draw manga, hoping she would learn how failure felt like. That completely failed as well. Even her LoveInterest Sorata sometimes became dangerously close to resenting her, lashing out at Mashiro a few times when [[HardWorkHardlyWorks his hard work fails but her natural talent succeeds]] (but he always gets over it).
* Eiko Arima from ''Manga/HisAndHerCircumstances'' resents her younger brother Shouji for having the life she always wanted but couldn't have due to her dad's StayInTheKitchen attitude toward women becoming doctors.
* ''LightNovel/ACertainMagicalIndex'': Ayu Mitsuari towards Misaki Shokuhou. They started out with the same power, but Academy City's higher-ups chose to devote their resources to training Misaki and snubbed Ayu, plus [[TheHero Touma]] [[ChickMagnet Kamijou]] became friends with Misaki and didn't notice her. The final straw for Ayu was when she ended up committing a BungledSuicide, only to learn after said failure that the reason why Touma didn't try to stop her when she texted him prior to the attempt was because he was busy saving Misaki, which caused her to ''snap''.
* ''Literature/{{Gate}}'':
** Akira Yanagida is a bit angry that Youji Itami is a slacker who coasts through life, yet he finds success and [[MagneticHero can get people to follow him]] much easier than him.
** Similarly, Shino has a minor breakdown on learning Itami is a ranger, ''and'' in Special Forces (even if it was the bare minimum) despite his otaku interests.
* In earlier chapters of ''Manga/KaguyaSamaLoveIsWar'', Kaguya is quick to take offense and ire every time her plans with Shirogane are spoiled by either Fujiwara or Ishigami, so much that there's only venom in her mind; however, she's just as quick to calm down when kindness is dispensed upon her, and as the story progresses, she gradually appealing to her better nature, and admitting that such rage is caustic and unhealthy not only to them as people she considers her dear friends, but to herself too.
* Kokushibo, the top of the Twelve Kizuki in ''Manga/DemonSlayerKimetsuNoYaiba'', is so envious of his younger twin brother Yoriichi's talent as a swordsman that his envy turned to resentment and hate. This eventually became the reason why Muzan turned him to a demon.
* ''Anime/MyDaddyLongLegs'': Sadie, a model orphan whom Ms. Lippet held out to win the scholarship to attend high school. Of course, Judy wins it instead, and Sadie does things like ripping younger orphans away from Judy, and later gets in a fight with Judy after she receives a nice pair of shoes with the money intended to go to a new wardrobe.
* In ''Anime/AquarionLogos'', Hayato doesn't like how Akira's gut-instinct solutions always seem to work out for him.
* ''Anime/PrincessSarah'': Lavinia, resents her wealth and popularity, and this gets worse when Sarah learns that her father has invested in diamond mines, and replaces Lavinia as the class representative.
* In ''Anime/SecretOfCeruleanSand'', [[spoiler: William]] spent much of his life [[StuckInTheirShadow feeling inferior to his stepbrother]], because of his accomplishments and their father's praise. Whereas their father barely acknowledged his efforts, which caused him to resent ''[[TheResenter both of them]]'', though he pretended otherwise.
* Asahi Saiba in ''Manga/FoodWars''. To contextualize, Joichiro Saiba took him as a disciple and acted as a fatherly figure to him, but after his wife died, Joichiro had to go back to Japan and raise his son Soma. Asahi grew up with a lot of resentment for Soma for being Joichiro's biological son, and part of his motive to defeat him is so Joichiro can be his father once more.
* ''LightNovel/LogHorizon'': Indicus. She is extremely resentful to the Debauchery Tea Party and especially its leader Kanami for BreakingTheFellowship and each going their own way or leaving Elder Tales entirely. Her case is particularly unreasonable, because many members had to leave because of Real Life reasons, yet despite being aware of it she chooses to ignore it and destroy Kanami's reputation as revenge.
* In ''Manga/MoriartyThePatriot'', Louis does not understand why William would have chosen Sherlock Holmes of all people to be the hero of his story, and he does not appreciate how much William respects Sherlock.

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* In ''Fanfic/EquestriaAHistoryRevealed'', the LemonyNarrator reveals that her anger and continuous Celestia-bashing throughout the fic was due to her resentment of Celestia after she was [[spoiler: rejected from Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns, albeit for being an [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin earth pony.]]]] This explains a great deal on why she tends to be so bitter and sees the world as a giant conspiracy by Celestia.
* In the ''WesternAnimation/JackieChanAdventures'' fanfiction ''Fanfic/QueenOfAllOni'', after her FaceHeelTurn, this forms a huge part of Jade's villain persona. She resents her parents for always ignoring her and shipping her off to relatives she didn't even know she had; she resents Jackie for never giving her the gratitude and respect she thinks she deserves for [[JerkassHasAPoint saving both his life and the world on multiple occasions]]; she resents Uncle for picking Tohru (a practical stranger) over her as his apprentice; and not only does she resent Tohru for being apprentice instead of her, she hates him for bringing her [[BroughtDownToNormal back down to normal]] last time she was the Queen.
* ''Fanfic/GlitchedMikoAU'': M-2 resents Miko for [[spoiler: having a normal human life, while she ended up living her life as a weapon.]]
* This sets one of the plots in motion in the WWE story, ''A New Beginning'', as Gail Kim performs a FaceHeelTurn on the brand-new Women's Champion, Melina. Gail claims that she's worked hard over the years and has nothing to show for it, while Melina sat out almost a year with an injury and got a title shot almost immediately upon her return.
* In the wrestling fic ''A Ring Of Their Own'', Victoria is shown at times feeling this way about Trish Stratus, especially when Trish signs on with the FWF, the federation Victoria founded and became the first champion of.
* In ''[[FanFic/TransformersAnimatedCybertronianGenesis Transformers Animated: Cybertronian Genesis]]'', Sentinel Prime resents Optimus for his many heroic deeds. [[spoiler:It only gets worse when Optimus becomes Ultra Magnus's chosen successor.]]
* Hefty Smurf plays this role in ''Fanfic/EmpathTheLuckiestSmurf''. For all the good that he does for his fellow Smurfs, he always seems overshadowed by the presence of Empath every time that he comes home from Psychelia, even more so in his later visits and up to when he is finally home for good. It gets even worse when Smurfette, the very Smurf that he wants as his future wife, ends up falling in love with Empath and ultimately marrying him.
* This is revealed to be the motivation for [[AdaptationalVillainy Gaara's]] hatred of Naruto in ''Fanfic/KitsuneNoKenFistOfTheFox''. When they both came into their government-backed training program, Gaara joined up as part of his plan to pursue national conquest and revenge [[spoiler:against the government for framing his parents for treason]], while Naruto joined up out of an optimistic eagerness to serve his country. That Naruto had both parents still alive while Gaara was continually mourning his parents' deaths didn't help the situation any.
--> '''Gaara:''' So naïve...so optimistic...so cheerful...bad enough you were so happy while I was miserable, but to have the nerve to be happy because you had everything I didn’t -- there’s no way I could ever forgive you for that!
* The Lucky Star fanfic ''Fanfic/TheDayEverythingChanged'' has the [[BigBad main antagonist]] of the story, Sakura Takahashi, both absolutely despises ''and'' is insanely and irrationally envious of Kagami. This reaches its peak at the end of Chapter 3 and during the first part of Chapter 4. Hopped up on two of the world's most potent steroids and armed with a metal pipe and a pocket knife, she goes on the attack, brutally beating poor Kagami half to death, and laying more than a few hits on Konata when she rushes in to help.
* In ''Fanfic/GuardiansWizardsAndKungFuFighters'', it turns out that for years, Elyon has been increasingly bitter towards Cornelia for always hogging the spotlight, and for the haughtiness and arrogance she displays as part of her jerkass mask (which Elyon doesn't even realize ''is'' just that -- a mask). This forms a huge part of how Cedric is able to convince her to turn on her friends and go to Meridian with him.
* The New Athenians from ''Fanfic/TheConversionBureau'' fanfic ''A Beacon of Hope'' are a whole nation of [[RogueDrone newfoal]] [[BoomerangBigot bigots]] who want to make the lives of Equestrians who like magic miserable, they will hire immigrants from Equestria and let them use magic but if you want to teach them about the magic of friendship you're asking for trouble.
* ''Fanfic/ABrighterDark'':
** Corrin is resentful toward Hoshido. She despises how much better off Hoshido is while Nohrians are starving to death.
** Turns out Flora hates ''Corrin'' just as much, for similar reasons.
* ''Fanfic/ProjectDarkJade'': Another common element of the stories where Jade turns evil is that she's angry at Uncle for not choosing her as apprentice. She also often resents the fact that Jackie doesn't give her much credit for all the times she's saved the day.
* Very similar to ''Project Dark Jade'', many [[FandomSpecificPlot Villain!Deku]] fics, such as ''Fanfic/TheTaleOfTheMusketeer'', often have Izuku turning to villainy out of resentment towards All Might for telling him he can't be a hero without a quirk, Katsuki for the years of bullying, or some combination thereof. These fics usually include [[BigBad All For One]] manipulating Izuku by giving him the encouragement he never got from anyone else, while grooming his negative feelings towards All Might.
* In ''Fanfic/KaraOfRokyn'', Jara resents [[ComicBook/{{Supergirl}} Kara]] because she's popular, beloved and well off, whereas Jara had to scrape for a living. It doesn't help that Kara turned Jara's advances down.
* In ''Fanfic/InfinityTrainBlossomingTrail'', Chloe Cerise spells out to Ash that she hates him for being a great Pokémon trainer -- and the Alola League Champion -- and also because his love of Pokémon makes it so that Goh spends more time with him and leaves her behind like a discarded toy. She's also shown to '''really''' hate Mew (as it was the reason why Goh stopped being friends with her) and writes a story where it's a JackassGenie and its protagonist (based off of Goh) is punished to chase after it for eternity.

* Snowe from ''VideoGame/SuikodenIV'' fits this trope pretty well, being upstaged by the game's hero at every turn and making an ass of himself at every time he tries turn things on his favour.
* In ''VideoGame/TheGodfather: The Game'', [[spoiler: Monk]]'s resentment of player character Aldo comes from how his parentage means that he will never become a made man.
* ''Franchise/{{Castlevania}}''
** Albus, bitter that Barlowe has chosen Shanoa to use the Dominus glyph instead of him, serves as the main antagonist of ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaOrderOfEcclesia.'' [[spoiler:Averted when it turns out that Albus acted like that because he was fully aware of what the Dominus glyphs would do to Shanoa, and refused to let her use them precisely because of that, in an attempt to protect her. He just went about it in the worst possible way.]]
** Hugh Baldwin feels the same way about Nathan Graves in ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaCircleOfTheMoon''. [[spoiler:And gets brainwashed because of it.]]
** And then there's Ortega's envy of Cornell's mastery of his beastman abilities in ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaLegacyOfDarkness''. [[spoiler:Also the real deal.]]
** ''Castlevania'' has a lot of these. It's a good thing Eric Lecarde didn't go further down this road in ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaJudgment''.
** [[spoiler:Zobek]] resents his current "position" as an evil overlord: as each of his siblings bicker and plot against him and each other, but are each too strong to be defeated by the others and too weak to compete against REAL evil, they have ultimately become the [[TitleDrop Lords Of Shadow]], protectors of Earth through sheer stubbornness and infighting alone, when they could be rulers of heaven and earth if they just stopped holding each other back like bickering schoolchildren.
* Ulala Serizawa in ''VideoGame/{{Persona 2}}'' ''Eternal Punishment'' does an unintentional variant of this [[spoiler: when Nyarlahothep takes advantages of her drunken state to get her to use the Joker Curse on Maya Amano, whom she resented for being more successful in life and in love than herself.]] It should be noted, however, the resentment was real, but ordinarily, she wouldn't have acted on it. Katsuya is also a fairly serious example, having thrown away his dreams of being a patissier when his father was framed for a crime to take care of his younger brother, who hardly seems to appreciate Katsuya's sacrifice. Nyarlathotep has a ''lot'' of fun shoving this in their faces at the Monado Mandala.
** Junpei of ''VideoGame/{{Persona 3}}'', who, struggling with feelings of inferiority, [[JumpedAtTheCall jumps at the call]] but gets repeatedly shown up by [[InstantExpert the protagonist]]. In "The Answer", Yukari becomes this to Aigis after the latter inherits the Protagonist's powers.
** [[KickChick Chie's]] Shadow in ''VideoGame/{{Persona 4}}'' implies Chie felt this way towards Yukiko, being envious of her popularity with the boys and general "girliness", while she was stuck in her shadow as the relatively unpopular [[TomboyAndGirlyGirl tomboy of the pair]]. Confronting said Shadow and learning that Yukiko genuinely wished she could be more like Chie helps her get over this.
** Also from ''VideoGame/{{Persona 4}}'', the last stages of Yosuke's Social Link reveal that he was envious of the Protagonist, who was able to adjust so well to life in the countryside while he was struggling to find his place, not to mention the Protagonist's popularity while Yosuke himself was initially hated at worst and ignored at best. By the time we learn this, however, he has largely gotten over it.
** A darker example comes in ''VideoGame/{{Persona 5}}'' with [[spoiler:[[TheStarscream Goro Akechi]]'s mixed feelings of admiration and envy towards the protagonist. Both were labeled unfairly by society and stigmatized as a result (the MC as a criminal due to his arrest for a crime he did not commit; Akechi as an [[BastardAngst unwanted bastard child]] who would amount to nothing for that very reason), but not only did the MC come to not care what society thinks of him, but he gained a network of friends and confidants who genuinely come to care for him; Akechi meanwhile despite being a celebrity detective who went to great lengths to appease society and hide his bastard child image, was and still is overwhelmingly LonelyAtTheTop. His envy warps into outright hatred by the time your party fights him, [[RageBreakingPoint tipping over the edge]] even more than he already had, to the point that he uses his Persona's [[BadPowersBadPeople berserking abilities]] on himself in order to kill the Phantom Thieves. To make matters worse for Akechi, the player learns at the end of the game that Yaldabaoth more or less set him up to fail in his "game," and any kind of benevolent guidance (including the help of [[AnthropomorphicPersonification the embodiment of human hope]], Morgana) that Akechi could have benefitted from were instead given to the protagonist.]]
*** Sae Niijima, the older sister of eventual Phantom Thief Makoto. This [[HelloAttorney prosecutor's]] cynicism in her corrupted field is compounded not only by the sexist attitudes of Japanese society, but by Makoto herself: she has personal standards and a sense of justice that Sae believes that she can never live up to, and to make matters worse, Makoto is still a high school student who cannot really do much to relieve Sae's burdens. Sae winds up snapping at Makoto over her uselessness one night, and her resentment grows to the point that [[spoiler:she gains a [[EldritchLocation Palace]] of her own, built on the [[SevenDeadlySins theme of Envy]], no less.]]
* In the [[VideoGame/MegaManClassic Mega Man Classic era]], Mega Man's rival Bass resents him due to former's position as a world champion. Likewise, Dr. Wily's work was glossed over in favor of Dr. Light's inventions, which caused Wily to grow resentful to the point of becoming a villain and attempting to take revenge on Light.
* ''VideoGame/MegaManZero2'': Elpizo resents Zero for quite a few things. Whether it's for his [[WorldsBestWarrior strength as a warrior]] that Elpizo [[IJustWantToBeBadass craves to have himself]], his [[OneHundredPercentAdorationRating popularity within the Resistance]] which Elpizo himself is shown to have some insecurities over, or the fact that he has [[{{Robosexual}} Ciel's attention]] over himself, who also has feelings for Ciel on some level. Note his passive-aggressive attitude toward Zero in the first half of the game. Which turns to just plain aggressive by the end when Elpizo hits both the BigBadSlippage ''and'' gets DrunkOnTheDarkSide due to mounting pressures on his mind.
* In the last act of the Nintendo 64 game ''VideoGame/AidynChronicles'', Prince Sheridan [[spoiler:after betraying his kingdom to the powers of Chaos]] ''snaps'' and reveals his long-buried resentment of Aloran. He always hated how everyone in the castle -- his father [[spoiler:who is also Aloran's father as well]], their combat instructor, the castle cook, Aloran's childhood friend Brenna (who always fawned over Aloran while snubbing Sheridan) -- favored Aloran over him. When Aloran tries to avoid him to deal with bigger problems Sheridan screams in frustration and forces a confrontation that gets him killed.
* [[VideoGame/EpicMickey Oswald]], who is understandably resentful of his younger half-brother Mickey after the latter stole the former's spotlight in more ways than one.
* ''VideoGame/DragonAgeII'' has this in Carver, who is often overshadowed by his twin sister Bethany due to her being a mage, and by the elder Hawke sibling (the player character) due to either also being a mage or for being a more focused fighter. Player choices can let Carver overcome this, if he doesn't die.
** [[spoiler:If you give Bethany over to become a Grey Warden, she acts like this the next time you see her because she's doomed to a cruel fate. [[ThickerThanWater She'll still come back to help you with the final battle, though]].]]
** Bringing Varric with you into the Fade can reveal that he deeply resents his mother's preference for his elder brother Bartrand, who left Varric to care for her while he was off building the family's businesses.
** In his final personal quest in Act 3, Fenris goes to meet his long-lost [[spoiler: sister Varania]] only to discover that she was the willing bait for his former master Danarius to reclaim him. Why? [[spoiler: To Varania, Fenris competed for Danarius's favor was rewarded with power, adoration and an easy life by their master's side, while she and their mother suffered endless hardship. In actuality, Fenris competed so he could use the reward to free his family and suffered years of horrific abuse at Danarius's hands. If you talk Fenris into letting her go free she still says that she thinks he got the better end of the bargain.]]
** This is the main basis of Fenris's and Anders's rivalry throughout the game. Fenris has suffered greatly in the mage-ruled Tevinter Imperium and thinks that mages can never be trusted to never abuse their power, and Anders was imprisoned in the cruel Mage Circles that keep mages locked away and thinks all mages should live free. Their resentment of the abuses they suffered and their opposing views means that a majority of their dialogue is very hostile. [[spoiler: It becomes so bad that Anders, slowly being corrupted by Justice, actually gives ''approval points'' if you give Fenris back to Danarius.]]
* In ''VideoGame/DuelSaviorDestiny'' [[spoiler:Lobelia]] turned to evil because she resented her ally Rubinas for being more popular, friendlier and not being horribly scarred like she herself was. When [[spoiler:Rubinas in Nanashi's body]] attempts to talk her down, she's completely unwilling to listen.
* Makarov Juno in ''VideoGame/LoveAndWar'' is this to the hero, Ryan Eramond: he envies Ryan for his good fortune, his role as the designated hero, and (in an earlier edition, now edited out) his success with women. The remake provides a [[DarkAndTroubledPast clearer]] [[DisappearedDad reason]] for his resentment.
* Metal Sonic, the robotic EvilKnockoff of ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog'', describes his organic counterpart as his "loathsome copy". It's understandable why he hates him, it's what he's programmed to do.
** To a lesser extent, [[TheRival Knuckles the Echidna]]. Despite his devotion to his duty of guarding the Master Emerald, [[StoicWoobie deep down he resents that it forces him to live alone]] in [[FloatingContinent Angel Island]] far away from civilization and envies Sonic's freedom and [[ThrillSeeker adventurous, carefree lifestyle]]. This didn't stop the two from becoming [[FriendlyRival Friendly Rivals]], VitriolicBestBuds and BashBrothers, though.
* Shinon from ''[[VideoGame/FireEmblemTellius Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance]]'' dislikes Ike, viewing him as a weakling who can't do anything without his father's help. When Ike assumes leadership of the Greil Mercenaries, he leaves the group. When Ike crosses swords with him later in the story, he returns. Later, under the influence of alcohol, Shinon reveals he's still not fond of Ike.
* Marche secretly holds resentment towards his younger brother, Donned, in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyTacticsAdvance''. Donned was a sick boy most of his life, so his parents have to pay attention to him a lot to make sure he gets the care that he needs. Marche perfectly understood the situation and he never acted out on it, but deep down, he held resentment towards his little brother because Marche basically grew up with aloof parents. Marche eventually confesses his feelings towards Donned, causing the younger brother to cry and apologize in guilt after realizing he had no idea how spoiled he was.
* In ''VideoGame/FableI'', Thunder is this to the Hero of Oakvale, even when the Hero is a boy in training and Thunder is a well-respected Guild Hero. If the Hero goes down the path of [[spoiler:unseating him as Arena champion, killing his little sister, and stealing his fiancee]], it's understandable; if the worst the Hero does is upstage Thunder's [[AlwaysSecondBest little sister]], it's... less so.
* In ''VideoGame/KyaDarkLineage'', Aton is the strongest of the Nativs, and is not happy when Kya turns out to be much stronger. Eventually, this leads to him selling her out.
* Zelda and Revali in ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaBreathOfTheWild'' held resentment towards Link in the past for similar reasons. [[spoiler:Because [[TheChosenOne Link was chosen by the Master Sword]], Link's accomplishments as a swordsman reminded Zelda of her own failures as a princess and in her inability to unlock her inherited sealing power from the goddess Hylia. Revali resents Link because he sees Link as having been handed his destiny on a plate, undermining Revali's own hard-earned skill as a Rito warrior.]] Both of them overcame this; [[spoiler:Revali does come to begrudgingly recognize Link's skill, while Zelda not only befriends Link for him saving her, but she ends up falling for him.]]
* In ''Franchise/TheElderScrolls'' series, this is a major reason for the [[ANaziByAnyOtherName Thalmor]]'s hatred of the [[TheOrder Psijic Order]], a powerful MagicalSociety and the oldest monastic order in Tamriel. Through [[SufficientlyAnalyzedMagic thousands of years of intensive study in the nature of magic]], the Order has become able to utilize it in ways (and on a scale) that the rest of Tamriel is unable to match. The Thalmor strongly desire that power, and cannot stand that the Order, a primarily Altmer organization, absolutely will not toe the Thalmor line or share their knowledge. Additionally, this is part of the reason the Thalmor hate [[DeityOfHumanOrigin Talos]], and have banned his worship. On the surface, their extreme Aldmeri religious beliefs teach that the Altmer are a SuperiorSpecies, descended from the [[OurGodsAreDifferent Aedra]], and the idea of a ''[[HumansAreBastards man]]'' joining their ranks is offensive and blasphemous. (The deeper reasoning [[note]] [[{{Fanon}} According to a popular fan theory]] [[/note]] [[OmnicidalManiac is even worse]]...)
* Bea in ''VideoGame/NightInTheWoods'' is shown to be resentful of Mae for getting the chance to go to college that Bea herself never got and then seemingly throwing it away without a care by abruptly dropping out. [[spoiler:However, Bea gets over it when she learns that Mae dropped out because she was having a mental breakdown.]]
* Played with in ''VideoGame/MassEffectAndromeda''. Cora Harper the second in command of the Pathfinder team trained for quite some time to succeed Alec Ryder as the human Pathfinder, but before Alec dies, he transfers Pathfinder authority to his son/daughter. Cora is not pleased about this, and her first conversation with you after this shows some hints of resentment. Ultimately subverted in that she remains a loyal dependable teammate and ultimately realizes that she would have made a lousy Pathfinder as she is too much of a risk averse order follower and would be out of her depth when given decision making authority.
** The Volus ambassador is resentful of humanity as a whole in the first game, as humanity was granted a lot of privileges by the Citadel Council while his own race had to “wait its turn” and was overlooked for millennia. The actual reason the Volus were passed over is because, while they are an economic powerhouse who even established the modern galactic economy, they don’t have anywhere close to the military might to enforce galactic stability.
** If you choose [[OldSoldier Captain David Anderson]] to become the new human councilor, [[ObstructiveBureaucrat Ambassador Udina]] who wanted that position for quite some time, starts seething with quiet resentment towards Anderson. It is implied that it is this resentment that causes him to conspire with Cerberus to annex the Citadel.
* At separate points in ''VideoGame/SlyCooper'', Bentley and Penelope develop envy towards Sly for his accomplishments. Bentley pulls out of it quickly because he ''knows'' Sly views him as an equal, and also that Bentley has his own skills that Sly might be envious of. Penelope, [[EvilCounterpart on the other hand]], succumbs to her resentment and [[MoralEventHorizon decides to murder Sly]].
** [[spoiler:Dr. M]] from ''VideoGame/Sly3HonorAmongThieves'' is Penelope's predecessor, having [[spoiler:betrayed Sly's father out of envy and spent about 20 years trying to open the Cooper Vault because he feels overshadowed]].
* ''VideoGame/FateGrandOrder'': Kadoc Zemlupus was a man with weak magical abilities who joined Chaldea in an attempt to save the world and prove himself. Then he gets caught in a bomb explosion and goes into a coma. Later, he wakes up due to taking the deal from the Foreign God to become one of the Crypters and learns that Ritsuka Fujimaru, who also has weak magical abilities, has already saved the world. Enraged at the fact someone so similar to himself succeeded and in his mind "stole" his chance, Kadoc takes to the role of cultivating his Lostbelt and preparing for the clash with the other six Crypters for the fate of the world with gusto, and when confronted by Ritsuka rants about how he could have saved the world too and done it better if he was in their place, and about how he won't let them take his Lostbelt.
* In ''VideoGame/GhostOfTsushima'':
** Ryuzo resented his childhood friend Jin for beating him in Lord Nagao's tournament two years prior to the start of the story. Ryuzo was intending to use the tournament to impress the watching lords to make him a samurai by his own merit. However, Jin went all out and beat him. In Ryuzo's mind, Jin, who was already a lord, had no stake in the tournament and believed Jin didn't want some commoner to best him. As a final insult, Jin genuinely never realized how important this tournament was to Ryuzo until Ryuzo brought it up in the present time. To Jin, it was [[ButForMeItWasTuesday just some tournament.]]
** In Masako's quest line, it's revealed that [[spoiler: her own sister Hana]] deeply resented Masako for marrying Lord Adachi and rose in status whereas the latter did not. In their mind, Masako [[spoiler: as the younger sister]] should not have had the life that [[spoiler: Hana]] wanted and coveted. It only worsened when Masako unknowingly [[spoiler: helped arrange Hana's marriage to a low retainer who was abusive to Hana.]]

* ''Franchise/AceAttorney'':
** In ''VisualNovel/ApolloJusticeAceAttorney'', Kristoph Gavin became ''very'' angry when he found that Phoenix Wright had been chosen over him to represent a defendant; [[spoiler:from Kristoph's point-of-view, it looked like]] said client had chosen Phoenix over himself because Phoenix had beat the client at poker and he hadn't. [[spoiler:In actuality, the client wasn't paying attention to the results so much as ''how'' they played the game; he saw a ruthless streak in Kristoph's play that he deemed dangerous. It turned out that [[IResembleThatRemark his judgment was absolutely right]]; [[BigBad Kristoph]] would go on to [[DisproportionateRetribution destroy Phoenix's career by tricking him into using falsified evidence and later personally killed that defendant.]]]] The ''WebComic/{{Hiimdaisy}}'' comic at the top of this page actually outlines [[spoiler:Kristoph's view of]] the situation very well.
** Before that there was ''[[VisualNovel/PhoenixWrightAceAttorneyJusticeForAll Justice For All]]'''s [[spoiler:Morgan Fey]], who is ''very'' bitter that [[spoiler:her younger sister had better spiritual powers than her and became the Kurain master, while she was shuffled off to one of the Branch families]]. So much in fact that [[spoiler:she tries to get her sister's last daughter, Maya, arrested for murder and then murdered herself]]. ''[[VisualNovel/PhoenixWrightAceAttorneyTrialsAndTribulations Trials and Tribulations]]'' reveals that [[spoiler:the entire Fey clan is full of Resenters, which is important for the backstory of the last case]].

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* In ''WesternAnimation/AladdinTheSeries'', this is a key component of villain Mozenrath's psyche: anger that Aladdin has been granted massive magical power (through the luck of having met the Genie), and become heir to Agrabah (through his chance meeting with Jasmine), whereas Mozenrath has had to sacrifice so much (including the flesh of his right hand in exchange for a magical gauntlet) for power.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Animaniacs}}'' gives us Buddy, an early Warner Brothers cartoon character whose shorts were so ridiculously boring, it threatened to do the company in. When the Warner siblings were created, their popularity skyrocketed and Buddy was given the shaft, forcing him to live out his life as a simple farmer and ''clearly'' wanting his stardom back.
* ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'' both subverts this and plays it straight: Though Prince Zuko would initially appear to be one of these characters, his dialogue would seem to reveal that almost all of his anger is directed inward at what he perceives to be his own failings, [[spoiler: allowing him to be much more calm, once he makes the HeelFaceTurn]]. However, though she hides it well, Azula's secret resentment of ''Zuko'', and the love their mother felt for him and not for her (at least so she thinks, it's really all in her mind. Her mother was actually worried about her.), ends up contributing greatly to her VillainousBreakdown. The person Zuko resents isn't any of the heroes -- instead, he resents Azula for being a better villain than him, and for getting the approval (Ozai probably isn't capable of anything that could be called "love") of their father. Apparently, said father liked to say that Azula was "born lucky," whereas Zuko was "lucky to be born." [[KickTheDog Jesus]]. [[TheUnfavorite Christ]].
** The SequelSeries ''WesternAnimation/LegendOfKorra'' features both Kya and Bumi showing envy since they were both excluded by Tenzin from their dad for not being air-benders. The latter seems to show slightly more being the only [[MuggleBornOfMages non-bender amongst their family.]] [[spoiler:And then Bumi becomes an air-bender himself.]]
** From the same series, Lin Bei Fong spent much of her life resenting her mother, Toph Bei Fong, and younger half-sister, Suyin, albeit for different reasons. She resented her mother for not accepting her and for her seeming favoritism of Suyin, however slight or unintentional, such as when she covered up the fact that Suyin took part in a crime that led to Lin getting her face scarred, and she resented Suyin for being (from Lin's viewpoint) smug KarmaHoudini who always got what she wanted and never had to suffer for any of the bad things she did, and refused to be a part of Suyin's life.
** EvilUncle Unalaq from Book 2 had been very envious of Tonraq being next in line for the throne in the Northern Water Tribe, so he sets up a trap that gets him exiled. But when he hears that Tonraq had fathered the Avatar, he decides to kidnap her to manipulate her only to betray the kidnappers when they were stopped by the White Lotus. Later, he manipulates Korra into joining him and takes time to [[VillainBall personally screw Tonraq over out of spite]] as Korra later points out when she learns the truth. Unalaq and Tonraq battle later, with Unalaq winning and gloating that he'll keep Tonraq alive so that the latter can see the former win once and for all.
* In ''WesternAnimation/BatmanTheBraveAndTheBold'', Robin, Speedy and Aqualad resent Batman, Green Arrow and AQUAMAN because, despite being adults, they're still treated as young sidekicks. Robin especially as he had actually moved on and went to protect Bludhaven. It lets up for Robin once he becomes Nightwing.
* ''WesternAnimation/BuzzLightyearOfStarCommand'' has Ty Parsec resenting Buzz Lightyear after the latter saved him 50+ times. It's also implied that Ty barely received any credit for any of his accomplishments whereas Buzz's own deeds are highly praised, thus causing Ty to resent his old friend. Ditto for Booster's old farm-town friend, who resented Booster being chosen for the Space Ranger academy and getting to go on adventures.
* ''WesternAnimation/CodenameKidsNextDoor'' has [[spoiler:Chad Dickson, the former Numbuh 274 and Soopreme Leader of the KND. Originally considered to be the greatest KND operative on the planet, he did not take it well when the higher-ups decided Numbuh 1 was better than him and decided to make him the Earth's representative for the GKND. Part of that stems from all the sacrifices he made for the organization, including becoming a FakeDefector and having his legacy in the KND tainted with his betrayal. The envy and resentment for this decision consumed him so much that by the time of his final appearance on the show, he attempted to ''kill'' Nigel for it, even though it wasn't his fault nor was it something he was even aware of at the time. Though Nigel hating him for his fake betrayal (not that he knew at the time) certainly did not help matters.]]
** In a dark twist, we find out a bit more why in a teaser of sorts: [[spoiler: The GKND turn out to be a dark organization and have been coercing Nigel to do something terrible to Earth, while Chad is begging him not to do so, because it would threaten the people they care about. The fact that Nigel ultimately ends up going through with it shows why Nigel was ultimately chosen... and it was not a good reason.]]
* ''WesternAnimation/DannyPhantom'':
** Vlad Masters. Despite being a billionaire celebrity and possessing half-ghost powers, Vlad is resentful towards his best friend Jack because he was the one who married the love of his life. Not to mention fathering a son who is half-ghost, a person who in Vlad's eyes, should rightfully be his! Naturally, he spends most of the series trying to [[MurderTheHypotenuse kill Jack]].
*** In a nice bit of irony, in an AlternateUniverse caused by Danny meddling in the past, he does marry Maddie, but turns out to be a controlling husband who refuses to let her do ghost hunting related activities because it reminds him of Jack. Yes, even when he gets what he wants, he's ''still'' resentful.
** Tucker Foley, but to a lesser extent. Prior to obtaining his ghost powers, Danny was on equal grounds with Tucker. The two were best friends who shared everything. Then Danny gets all the awesome powers and Tucker is stuck being the ButtMonkey. One episode showed him acting on his resentment via an (unintentional) [[BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor deadly wish]] that nearly had him kill Danny.
*** Indeed, seeing the monster his wish had created helps Tucker move past this trope.
---->'''Tucker:''' ''[[MyGodWhatHaveIDone That's me?]]''
* When [[LonelyRichKid Remy Buxaplenty]] first appears in ''WesternAnimation/FairlyOddParents'', he's resentful of Timmy for having two godparents ''and'' real parents who, while neglectful, still love him deeply. Remy only has the one godparent, and his real parents are so obsessed with making money that they spend just two minutes a day with him and ''don't even know his name''. In later appearances, he seems to be motivated by petty vengeance and sheer {{Jerkass}}ery more than anything else.
* I.R. Baboon from ''WesternAnimation/IAmWeasel'' resents Weasel's fame and considers himself better, even though Weasel is a certified genius, whereas Baboon is... [[TheDitz well, not]].
* In ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'':
** Princess Luna, angry that ponies enjoyed her sister Celestia's day but slept though her night, embraced her dark side and became [[SuperpoweredEvilSide Nightmare Moon]], intending to reign over [[TheNightThatNeverEnds eternal darkness]]. This gets revisited in the Season 7 episode "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS7E10ARoyalProblem A Royal Problem]]", where it's revealed both sisters think the other has it easier (and Celestia too has her fantasies of dropping all restraints and ruling unchallenged).
** Sunset Shimmer, the BigBad of ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyEquestriaGirls'', clearly resents Twilight Sparkle, because she managed to earn everything Sunset desired: adoration, power, and an [[spoiler:alicorn princess position]]. This becomes evident when Twilight's friends praise her for her loyalty and fortitude while she grows closer and closer to a VillainousBreakdown with every word spoken. [[spoiler: Luckily, she pulls a HeelFaceTurn and appears to grow out of it by the time of ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyEquestriaGirlsRainbowRocks'', learning to accept her loss and instead embracing what she has now: The human versions of the Mane Six and alicorn!Twilight as her friends, the true respect of Canterlot High, and some [[SuperMode sweet]] [[TouchTelepathy magical powers]] on the side.]]
** Though her StartOfDarkness was the result of half the Mane Six ruining her show and [[LoonyFan two obnoxious fans]] causing an incident that ruined her career, Trixie would ultimately come to resent Twilight Sparkle for apparently having the power she doesn't. This would last through a RoaringRampageOfRevenge with an ArtifactOfDoom and then well into ''Season Six'' before she would finally drop the grudge. Ironically, the reason she drops the grudge is ''because'' of the grudge: she befriends someone to spite Twilight Sparkle, and [[BecomingTheMask the friendship becomes genuine]].
** [[DarkMagicalGirl Starlight Glimmer]], the BigBad of Season 5 has this and then some. It was bad enough that she had already developed deep-rooted [[NeverBeHurtAgain social]] [[FriendlessBackground issues]] [[StartOfDarkness resulting]] from a broken friendship as a filly, which deeply traumatized her. Meeting the Mane Six, Twilight Sparkle [[GreenEyedMonster most especially]], just sent her over the edge. When the Mane Six thwarted her in the Season 5 premiere, she spent the ''entire season'' tracking them down and plotting her revenge against them. Starlight didn't care about why or what it would lead to, she despised Twilight and her friends that much. [[spoiler: Revealing that this is what Starlight greatly desired: [[IJustWantToHaveFriends Friends]]. But her resentment for the Mane Six is so deep she still needs more talking down even after being shown the [[BadFuture horrible consequences]] of her actions. Fortunately, Twilight Sparkle [[TalkingTheMonsterToDeath managed to get through]] to Starlight enough to finally make her let go of her resentment and [[HeelFaceTurn give friendship another chance]], which she does, ultimately being forgiven and [[SixthRanger becoming friends]] with the Mane Six]].
* ''WesternAnimation/SheRaAndThePrincessesOfPower'': '''Catra'''. She was raised by [[AbusiveParents Shadow Weaver]] alongside Adora, receiving the most overt and physical mistreatment[[note]]while the 'golden child' was told constantly that she was at fault if her friend "misbehaved"[[/note]]. After Adora's [[HeelFaceTurn defection]] coincided with Catra's recognition for her own talents up to and including Shadow Weaver being forced to give her the promotion planned for Adora, the idea that her own fortunes depended on Adora's defeats took root and metastasized.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'' episode "Homer's Enemy", Frank Grimes' main character trait is resentment of how well Homer has done for himself despite being, well, [[TooDumbToLive Homer Simpson]], while he has worked hard all his life and gotten nowhere. He might have done better to resent the people who favored Homer over him instead -- Mr. Burns especially -- since they were so blatant in their hostility toward him, while Homer was merely InnocentlyInsensitive.
* Plankton of ''WesternAnimation/SpongebobSquarepants'' has, as his main villainous motivation, resentment of Mr. Krabs's success (and, in turn, the community that ''made'' Mr. Krabs a success), especially in comparison to his own restaurant, hence his ongoing attempts to steal the Krabby Patty formula. Also seems to be reversed at times: Krabs at the very least has a rather intense rivalry with Plankton and is obsessed with gloating to his face. Whenever Plankton seems to have even minor success that makes his own resentment fade, Krabs obsessively tries to destroy him, intent on putting him back in his shadow.
* ''WesternAnimation/StarVsTheForcesOfEvil'': Higgs is a squire who has been training for years to eventually be worthy of becoming a knight. She gets angry at Marco Diaz when he seemingly goes on the fast track to knighthood just because he is Princess Star Butterfly's friend. She rants that she worked hard while he earned nothing. * Initially, Raven appears to be this in regards to Terra in ''WesternAnimation/TeenTitans'': angry that Terra has apparently managed to control her powers so easily, while Raven still must meditate constantly to keep hers in check. * ''WesternAnimation/TangledTheSeries'': Over the course of Season 2 [[ActionGirl Cassandra]] is shown to resent Rapunzel for having everything come easy to her. Rapunzel [[ThePollyanna is always happy]], Cass isn't. Rapunzel is the beloved princess of a whole kingdom, while Cassandra struggles to prove her worth to her own father. They manage to work through this with [[Recap/TangledTheSeriesS2E16RapunzelDayOne Episode 16...]] [[spoiler: [[Recap/TangledTheSeriesS3E01RapunzelsReturn only for Cassandra to find many, many more reasons to resent Rapunzel.]]]]
* In ''WesternAnimation/ThunderCats2011'', Lion-O and Tygra are Resenters to each other. Lion-O resents Tygra for being the AlwaysSomeoneBetter and CompassionateCritic whom nearly everyone in their kingdom -- even his own ''father'' -- preferred over him. Tygra resents Lion-O for being TheChosenOne of the Sword of Omens and apparently Cheetara. That second one is particularly galling for Tygra since he's nursed a crush on Cheetara since childhood. Lion-O and Tygra's mutual resentment fuels their SiblingRivalry, though Lion-O still wholeheartedly trusts Tygra and doesn't believe that Tygra would ever betray him [[spoiler:even after hearing a prophecy stating Tygra will do just that.]]
** They do eventually start to get over it [[spoiler: when Cheetara makes it clear she wants a relationship with Tygra, and Tygra, in charge after Lion-O's (temporary) death, finds out that he isn't as successful a leader as Lion-O had proven to be]].

Eventually, Beije attempts to discredit Cain, due to his jealousy over Cain getting everything handed to him and having everything come easy. Johnny's so bitter over it that he spent a good chunk of his tenure as General Manager making Punk's life miserable and attempting to rid him of the WWE title. Just to rub salt in the wound, Punk would end up holding the title for 434 days, making him the longest-tenured WWE Champion of the modern era and pretty much immortalizing him in WWE history, while Johnny got fired from his position as General Manager.

* ''Literature/BazilBroketail'': This is most likely the main reason behind Turrent's attitude towards Relkin (and, to lesser extent, other dragonboys in the 109th). Despite his long line of service — and officer rank that comes with it — Turrent saw little real action and never got much recognition because of it. Relkin, on the other hand, is a decorated war hero with multiple victorious battles under his belt.

** Unlike Turrent, who at least had well-established and somewhat understandable motives for resenting his subordinates, Wiliger keeps finding new, increasingly petty reasons for hating them. They range from throwing a tantrum over the fact that he cannot keep his beloved giant "109" sign plastered to his headgear or being knocked out at the beginning of a battle and the dragonboys doing the entire job without him.

** While ComicBook/LexLuthor's motivations for hating Superman [[DependingOnTheWriter depend on the writer]], very often it's because he resents his self-made BadassNormal accomplishments being upstaged by some alien creature who won the SuperpowerLottery and can now lord over humanity as the Beloved Favorite Son of Metropolis.
