* Bhuta, the much put-upon mook of High Priest Clang in ''Help!'', has been treated as a punch-bag by his boss for all of the film. So, in the closing sequence, when Clang gleefully grabs the MacGuffin ring that gives immense power to those who can put it on and remove it at will, but marks everyone else as a blood sacrifice, and finds that he CAN'T REMOVE IT...well, it's not much of a surprise to see him fleeing in terror from a triumphantly-yelling Bhuta brandishing a scimitar.

doesn't. This can sometimes tie into an IronicEcho if the Mook uses the Big Bad's own VillainousDemotivator lines as a reason he can't help.

Often occurs in the form of BodyguardBetrayal. Subtrope of HoistByHisOwnPetard and KarmicDeath. See also NiceToTheWaiter. Not to be confused with TheDogShotFirst. If the dog biting back does some puppy-kicking of its own, it's TheRevolutionWillNotBeCivilized. Can sometimes overlap with TheStarScream if the dog takes over command of the Big Bad's forces.

the example was incorrect; *Bhuta* puts on the ring, *Clang* chases

* Bhuta, the much put-upon mook of High Priest Clang in ''Help!'', has been treated as a punch-bag for all of the film. So, in the closing sequence, when Clang finally grabs the MacGuffin ring for himself, triumphantly dons it, and then finds that he can't remove it - which marks him down as a human sacrifice - it doesn't really come as a surprise to see a gleefully-yelling Bhuta charging after him, wielding a scimitar with clearly homicidal intent...

Unlike the BastardUnderstudy and TheStarscream, this character attacks as a crime of opportunity. There is no danger that he will take over the villain's place in the grand scheme of things. The backstabber often ends up dead -- but this is not often a case of RedemptionEqualsDeath, because the motive is often not heroic; even victims are generally motivated by revenge. The villain's only control was fear, and when he's no longer afraid...
