The first of these was ''WebVideo/YuGiOhTheAbridgedSeries'', which posted its first episode on Website/YouTube in 2006 -- however, the idea of abridging works for fun started [[OlderThanYouThink way earlier]], dating back to ''Theatre/TheCompleteWorksOfWilliamShakespeareAbridged'' (a play first performed in 1987), as well as UsefulNotes/AdobeFlash cartoons in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In the mid-2010s, a sub-genre based on "[[WebVideo/CodeMENT MENT]]" emerged.
