By the epilogue's end, the project hasn't yet finished, but Senku discovers a material strong enough for its cable.]]

* The [[https://www.fossilhunters.xyz/disruptive-technology/the-aerovator-alternative.html aerovator]] (also described [[https://books.google.com.au/books?id=539QDxp-rtQC&pg=PA173#v=onepage&q&f=false here]] is a variation that rotates horizontally, in contrast to a regular space elevator that rotates vertically (i.e. as the Earth rotates). It would consist of a super-strong ribbon stretching from the ground diagonally up and then curving into a horizontal section that extends out about 1000 kilometres. A fleet of planes would constantly fly in a circle and pull on the ribbon near its base, making the ribbon's tip whip around at faster-than-orbital speed (keeping it up via centrifugal force). A vehicle would climb up the ribbon and then be flung out by centrifugal force, reaching orbit. While smaller and cheaper than a space elevator, an aerovator would cost more to maintain since it requires planes to keep it up.

* Some people have stopped laughing about this concept. There is a growing group of enthusiasts and scientists, [[http://www.isec.info ISEC,]] working on it and a full-blown annual [[http://www.spaceelevatorconference.org conference.]] Though it's worth noting that the more serious thought that is developed about space elevators, the more problems are discovered with the concept. Some have proposed other ideas, like the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyhook_(structure) skyhook]] (essentially a shorter space elevator that doesn't reach the ground), while others have abandoned the idea as infeasible even with near-future technology.
* A probably better idea is the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Launch_loop launch loop.]] It's still largely unknown to the masses (because a strip of rotating wire is a lot less glamorous than a wire shooting up into the sky), but seems to be a lot more practical, not to mention more feasible at our current technology level (you don't need carbon nanotubes to make it).
* Even better than those two is a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_Driver#On_Earth Mass Driver,]] which is basically a 100 plus kilometer long space gun.

bottom end. Being shorter means they wouldn't need such strong materials to construct. There are two types, non-rotating and rotating.

To reduce air resistance, the opening of an Earth-based mass driver would need to be at a high altitude, such as on a mountain.

* The [[https://medium.com/@rokomijic/the-space-runway-faq-8e5b2cbd6f7e space runway]] (also known as the [[https://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Hypervelocity_Landing_Track hypervelocity landing track]]) is effectively a horizontal version of the space elevator that's in orbit. Like the aforementioned skyhook, it would require spacecraft to reach. The purpose of it would be to accelerate payloads to orbital speed, meaning that spacecraft wouldn't need nearly as much fuel (most of a spacecraft's fuel, when launched from Earth, is needed to reach orbital speed) and could carry much bigger payloads.
