Soup has been around for centuries, and lots of people eat it. However, this trope is when it is associated with illness somehow. In addition to being wrapped up in a blanket with thermometer in their mouth and tissue boxes surrounding them, a common shorthand for when a character is sick is to have them be eating a bowl of soup. Soup is often offered to or left on hold for sick people.

This is a common trope in the United States, and most often applies to chicken soup. Somewhat TruthInTelevision as chicken has been confirmed by scientists to have healthy properties which can help if you have a cold and soup is easy to eat, however it can be rather off-putting if a healthy person wants to eat it.
