[[caption-width-right:350:And that's how you save a Pikachu with style!]]

->''"I customized that bike for myself! It's too wild for you to handle."''
-->-- '''Shotaro Kaneda''' (to [[UnknownRival Tetsuo Shima]]), ''Manga/{{Akira}}''

You are a BadassBiker and you want to enter with style with your two-wheeled monster. Want to stop it with style and look [[RuleOfCool as cool as possible]]? An easy way to do so is slamming on the brakes so your bike skids away from the camera, perpendicular to the direction of the skid and angled so that both the side and top of the vehicle are visible until it stops (and if the slide includes [[ShockAndAwe lightning]], much better). This is what this trope is about: a bike slide stopping with style, a way to cement your driving skills, or your status as TheHero of your show.

The TropeCodifier is the ''Manga/{{Akira}}'' shot during the [[https://youtu.be/t0lOTFRFAqQ?t=142 bike gang fight scene]], when after [[LovableRogue Kaneda]] defeats the leader of the Clowns and makes this sliding stop. This is [[FanNickname more known]] as the "''AKIRA'' bike slide", which was the previous name of this trope. Even when [[OlderThanYouThink the bike slide was a resource used before]], it wasn't until this anime movie that the shot became homaged/parodied in [[https://old.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/px3372/the_iconic_akira_slide_referenced_across_three/ more ways than you think]].

SubTrope of StockShoutOuts and HomageShot. If you can do this, then you're a BadassBiker, or even a BadassDriver if you can make it in four wheels as well. Also, this is a good DynamicEntry and/or BigEntrance if you're on two wheels. Bonus points if your cool stop is done with a CoolBike. Of course, this is made as a RuleOfCool for fictional works only and doesn't take any issues of UsefulNotes/MotorcycleSafety, so DontTryThisAtHome![[note]]The most common risk to attempting this is what is known as a "lowside crash", where the bike slips out from under the rider and both end up skidding along the ground, with the bike "leading" the skid; '''however''', it can also easily result in a "highside crash", in which the bike (usually through the tires suddenly finding traction in the road such as a rough spot or sudden pothole) violently flips over into the direction that the vehicle is skidding, throwing the rider with it so that the rider is the one "leading" the skid, which is ''extremely'' dangerous; neither situation is ideal, but "lowside" crashes are considered to be the "safer" crash because the bike can cushion the rider from impact of anything in the way, and is at much less risk of crushing the rider, which is a very real risk during a "highside" crash -- not to mention that the rider will be the first thing that hits any obstacles in the way, which will usually be followed by the motorcycle smashing into the rider.[[/note]]

* ''Manga/{{Akira}}'' is the obvious TropeMaker and [[TropeCodifier Codifier]] of this trope with TheMovie, but this was [[OlderThanYouThink made way before this]], being part of the same scene in the [[https://shambrookblog.files.wordpress.com/2018/03/akira_1_p128.jpg 1982 manga]], which is a part of a panel instead a complete shot as seen in the anime.

* ''Anime/{{Kurozuka}}'' homages the bike slide during an action scene in episode 10, where [[HeroProtagonist Kuro]], wielding a sword while on his motorcycle battles one of Hasegawa's gunship during a chase scene, which leads from a highway overpass to the top of a collapsing building, with Kuro sliding down the building's side before hitting the asphalt, skidding sideways across the road where Kuro is prominently featured in the center of the screen.

You are a BadassBiker and you want to enter with style with your two-wheeled monster. Want to stop it with style and look [[RuleOfCool as cool as possible]]? An easy way to do so is slamming on the brakes so your bike skids away from the camera, perpendicular to the direction of the skid and angled so that both the side and top of the vehicle are visible, until it stops (and if the slide includes [[ShockAndAwe lightning]], much better). This is what this trope is about: a bike slide stopping with style, a way to cement your driving skills or your status as TheHero of your show.

* In episode 10 of ''Manga/KeepYourHandsOffEizouken'', Asakusa and Hanamori ride their bikes, but then Hanamori overtakes Asakusa and stops in front of her with this slide. As the "love letter" to anime industry this series is, Hanamori's slide is a clear homage to this scene, with her bike being red and even having the lightning when she brakes.
